    'Hawks extend Caps' season-worst skid
    January 20, 2019
    By The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) Jonathan Toews had three goals and two assists, Patrick Kane added two goals and three assists, and the Chicago Blackhawks handed the Washington Capitals their season-high fifth consecutive loss with an 8-5 victory on Sunday.

Brandon Saad and Alex DeBrincat also scored and Dylan Strome added an empty-netter as last-place Chicago stopped its own five-game slide. Collin Delia made 34 saves, including impressive stops on John Carlson and Tom Wilson in the second.

Washington's defensemen accounted for each of its five goals while star forwards Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov were kept off the scoresheet. Carlson scored twice, Dmitry Orlov and Matt Niskanen each had a goal and an assist, and Brooks Orpik got his second of the season.

Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby allowed four goals on 11 shots before he was replaced by Pheonix Copley 2:30 into the second.

    ISLANDERS 3, DUCKS 0

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Cal Clutterbuck scored twice in the first period and Robin Lehner made 19 saves as New York downed Anaheim for its fifth straight win.

The victory was the 15th in 18 games for the Metropolitan Division-leading Islanders, who have surged past Washington and Columbus over the past month.

Clutterbuck opened the scoring at 4:50 of the first with a power-play goal.

Clutterbuck scored again from a nearly identical spot midway through the first for his sixth goal of the season.

Leo Komarov scored his sixth this season with 29 seconds remaining in the second period.

    CANUCKS 3, RED WINGS 2

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Elias Pettersson had a goal and an assist in his return from a knee injury, and Vancouver beat Detroit.

The 20-year-old rookie, who ran his point total this season to 44, missed five games after suffering an MCL sprain against Montreal on Jan. 3.

Antoine Roussel and Bo Horvat also scored for Vancouver, and Brock Boeser had two assists.

Frans Nielsen and Thomas Vanek scored for Detroit.

Jacob Markstrom stopped 35 shots for the Canucks, and Wings goalie Jonathan Bernier had 28 saves.

    COYOTES 4, MAPLE LEAFS 2

TORONTO (AP) - Vinnie Hinostroza scored in the third period and Arizona beat slumping Toronto.

Clayton Keller, Mario Kempe and Lawson Crouse also scored as Arizona won for the fifth time in its last seven games (5-1-1). Darcy Kuemper stopped 25 shots. The Coyotes improved to 8-0-1 in their last nine trips to Toronto.

John Tavares and Travis Dermott had the goals for Toronto, which has lost seven of its last 10.

    HURRICANES 7, OILERS 4

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Nino Niederreiter and Lucas Wallmark each scored twice to lead Carolina past Edmonton.

Andrei Svechnikov had a goal and two assists, and Brock McGinn and Jordan Martinook also scored as the Hurricanes snapped a two-game skid. Sebastian Aho and Jaccob Slavin each had three assists, and Petr Mrazek stopped 17 shots.

Leon Draisaitl had two goals, and Brandon Manning and Zack Kassian also scored for the Oilers, who have lost two straight. Cam Talbot gave up three goals on 15 shots before he was replaced by Mikko Koskinen, who had 15 saves.

    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

New England in the Super Bowl under Brady/Belichick:

    2001: W20-17 (+14) vs St Louis

    2003: W32-29 (-7) vs Carolina

    2004: W24-21 (-7) vs Philadelphia

    2007: L14-17 (-12) vs NY Giants

    2011: L17-21 (-3) vs NY Giants

    2014: W28-24 (-1) vs Seattle

    2016: W34-28 OT (-3) vs Atlanta

    2017: L33-41 (-4.5) vs Philadelphia

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a frigid weekend…….

    13) My opinion is that I write better when I’m annoyed, so today’s article might be pretty terrible, because this was a great freakin’ weekend.

    — The weather here was awful all weekend, we had a foot of snow, but DirecTV never went out, except for a couple of the movie channels late Saturday night.
    — My car started in 0 degree weather Sunday night, because I got a new battery Thursday.
    — Watched a ton of basketball Saturday; seems like it was a week ago.
    — Oh yeah, the Rams are going to the Super Bowl!!! Tremendous!!!

    12) Rams 26, Saints 23 OT— Not many games where the winning team led for 0:00 the whole game, except after the last play. This game turned on a fake punt by the Rams when they trailed 13-0 with 14:23 left in 2nd quarter- they looked like a dead team until then.

Scouting is important in football; I had never heard of Missouri Western University until the Rams drafted a kicker from Missouri Western in the 6th round of the 2012 draft. Rams were in St Louis at the time; not sure if that helped them find Greg Zuerlein, but they did, and boy did that pay off Sunday night in the Superdome.

Greg the Leg booted a 48-yard FG to tie the game, a 57-yard FG to win it as the Rams, who did not lead at any point in regulation, won their 4th NFC title, 26-23.

    11) I mention this every so often, but the NFL is awesome because the difference between the winning and losing teams is so often EXTREMELY thin.

Go back to 2016, the Rams were 4-5 when they decided to give Jared Goff his first NFL start; they were playing Miami at home, and led 10-0 with 5:00 left. If they win the game, they’re 5-5, everyone is happy, and they probably finish 7-9 at worst- they have said since then if they had wound up 7-9 that year, they wouldn’t have fired Jeff Fisher.

Miami won that game 13-10, the Rams didn’t win another game that season and a coaching change was made. And what a change it has been!!!

They wouldn’t have hired Sean McVay if they finished 7-9, so thank the good Lord they blew that 10-0 lead against the Dolphins. Or else today’s fun wouldn’t have happened.

    11) Patriots 37, Chiefs 31 OT— What a day for the NFL; two overtimes in conference title games when the weather in lot of the country was terrible. TV ratings have to be huge. Patriots head to their 11th Super Bowl.

Tony Romo is amazingly good on TV, the best NFL TV analyst ever; he calls out plays before they happen, the way Hank Stram used to do working Monday night games on the radio.

Tough night for the replay center; awful lot of close replay decisions in this game.

    10) SUNY-Morrisville plans to roll out a program next fall that will teach their students how to grow marijuana. Anticipation of a Cannabis Industry Minor is a result of the expectation that New York is expected to legalize recreational marijuana soon.

    9) Nick Foles came up four snaps short of a $1M bonus for playing in 33% of Philly’s snaps, but the Eagles did the right thing and gave Foles the $1M anyway.

    8) Only four of the first 29 Mountain West basketball games were decided by fewer than ten points. League has slipped a decent amount the last couple years.

    7) Providence 79, Marquette 68— Marquette retired Dwyane Wade’s #3 jersey at halftime of this game. Not sure what took them so long, but better late than never.

    6) Boston College 87, Florida State 82— Sometimes you lose a game and it comes with a hangover; Seminoles lost at home to Duke by a hoop, then went on road and lost at both Pitt and Boston College. FSU was 12-1 vs non-conference schedule #113, but is 1-4 in the ACC.

    Speaking of which……..

    5) Monmouth 83, Iona 81— Hawks are 5-2 in the MAAC, after going 1-12 in pre-conference games; Iona is 4-2 in the MAAC, after going 2-9 in pre-conference games.

In other words, the MAAC sucks this year.

    4) Very interesting conversation during the Kansas-West Virginia game Saturday, with Fran Fraschilla giving two solid reasons why Canada is producing more and more top college hoop prospects.

    a) Vince Carter and the Toronto Raptors inspired a lot of Canadians to enjoy basketball more, hoops has become a bigger part of the culture north of the border.

    b) Canada’s more liberal immigration laws have resulted in more people from the Caribbean and Africa winding up in Canada.

    3) Timberwolves 116, Suns 114— Minnesota wins on a fadeaway jumper by Derrick Rose with 0:00.6 left; Wolves are being coached by Flip Saunders’ 32-year old son now- they’ve played lot of high-scoring games since he took over from Tom Thibodeau.

    2) Basketball player named Isaiah Stewart from Rochester chose Washington over Duke, as Mike Hopkins’ connections to central New York pay off again.

    1) Rams opened as a 1-point favorite in the Super Bowl, but professional bettors dumped a lot of money on New England, so now the Patriots are -2 as I type this late Sunday night. The total is 59. Lets hope those pros are wrong with their bets

Coyle scores, Wild beat Golden Knights 4-2
    January 21, 2019
    By The Associated Press

LAS VEGAS (AP) Charlie Coyle scored his second game-winning goal of the season with 5:31 remaining to lift the Minnesota Wild past the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2 on Monday.

With the win, the Wild moved past Colorado and Vancouver into the top wild-card slot in the Western Conference. Minnesota takes on Colorado on Wednesday, the final game before the All-Star break for both teams.

With the puck loose in front of the net, Jared Spurgeon sent a perfect pass to Coyle, who beat Vegas goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury with a high shot that put the Wild in front.

Marcos Foligno, Eric Staal and Mikko Koivu also scored for the Wild. Devan Dubnyk made 30 saves and has stopped 64 of 67 shots in his last three games.

Alex Tuch and Max Pacioretty scored for the Golden Knights.

Fleury made 18 saves for Vegas.

The loss kept Vegas in third place in the Pacific Division, behind first-place Calgary and San Jose.

    KINGS 4, BLUES 3

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Paul LaDue scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period, and Los Angeles rallied past St. Louis.

Jonathan Quick stopped 33 shots in his 302nd NHL victory, which is fourth-best among U.S.-born goaltenders.

Anze Kopitar and Tyler Toffoli each had a goal and an assist, while Brendan Leipsic had two assists. Drew Doughty also scored for Los Angeles, which has won three of its last five.

Mackenzie MacEachern, Oskar Sundqvist and Ryan O'Reilly scored for St. Louis. Jordan Binnington made 25 saves.

    PREDATORS 4, AVALANCHE 1

DENVER (AP) - Pekka Rinne stopped a penalty shot among his 35 saves and Nashville knocked off Colorado as Peter Laviolette captured win No. 600 of his NHL coaching career.

Nick Bonino and Viktor Arvidsson scored 1:34 apart in the second period, while Roman Josi added another and Ryan Ellis contributed a late empty-netter from deep in his zone. The Predators beat their Central Division rivals for a 12th time over the last 13 regular-season meetings.

Alexander Kerfoot had the lone goal for the Avalanche, who have dropped five of seven.

    PANTHERS 6, SHARKS 2

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Frank Vatrano had a goal and three assists for a career-high four points to lift Florida over San Jose.

Vincent Trocheck, Keith Yandle and Nick Bjugstad each had a power-play goal for the Panthers. Mike Matheson and Aaron Ekblad also scored, Roberto Luongo stopped 27 shots and Aleksander Barkov added three assists.

The Panthers have won three straight after losing their previous seven games.

Timo Meier and Logan Couture scored for the Sharks. Martin Jones allowed five goals on 21 shots before being replaced by Aaron Dell with 12:38 left in the third period. Dell made eight saves.

    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

    — Rutgers 76, Nebraska 67— Damaging loss for the Cornhuskers.

    — Creighton 91, Georgetown 87— Very fun game to watch; refs weren’t calling flops!!!

    — Kansas 80, Iowa State 76— Remind me in March that Iowa State is really good.

    — Warriors 130, Lakers 111— Klay Thompson made his first ten 3-pointers.

    — Nine of 11 NBA games Monday were decided by 10+ points.

    — Has a former QB ever been an NFL defensive coordinator? Would make some sense.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

    13) Football players are really tough; Saints’ OT Andrus Peat played the last two weeks with a broken hand that he had operated on during the Saints’ bye week two weeks ago. Imagine a guy having to block Aaron Donald all day with a broken hand? Can’t be much fun.

    12) One of the best parts of Super Bowl week is when the Westgate SuperBook puts out its prop bets for the game- last year, it was a 42-page PDF document. You can get into a lot of trouble with a document that is filled with 42 pages of wagering opportunities.

    11) There are rumors that former Seahawks’ QB Jon Kitna will become the QB coach for the Cowboys; right now, he is offensive coordinator for the San Diego Fleet of the new AAF, where his boss is former Rams’ coach Mike Martz.

The AAF starts play on February 9, the Saturday after the Super Bowl.

    10) Cincinnati Reds got P’s Sonny Gray, Reiver Sanmartin from Bronx in exchange for IF Shed Long and the Reds’ 2019 Competitive Balance Round A draft pick. Gray signed a contract thru the 2022 season; Gray will enjoy not facing the DH, but Cincinnati does have a small ballpark- over last five years, it ranks #11 out of 30 major league fields as a hitters’ ballpark.

    9) This is a good time to remind everyone that for whatever reason, Patriots’ owner Robert Kraft once met Vladimir Putin; during the meeting, as the story goes, Kraft takes off his Super Bowl ring and shows it to Putin, who stuck the ring in his pocket and walked away.

That ring is still in Russia; Kraft appealed to the Obama administration, but was told to let it go. Why would Kraft be meeting Putin in the first place?

    8) NFL announced their international games for next season:

    Mexico City: Chiefs-Chargers
    England: Panthers-Buccaneers, Bears-Raiders
    Rams-Bengals, Texans-Jaguars

    7) Danny the Glover checked in to let us know that this is the first time the same two cities have been opponents in the World Series/Super Bowl in same season since 1969, when Mets-Orioles met in the World Series, and Jets-Colts played in the Super Bowl.

    6) How bad do you have to be in order to be a home underdog to the Chicago Bulls? Bulls came into Monday’s game on a 9-game losing streak, but beat Cleveland 104-88 as a 2-point road favorite. It was the first time the Bulls were favored anywhere since November 21.

    5) NBA math; Houston Rockets are trading Carmelo Anthony (actually, his contract) and cash to Chicago but he’ll never play for the Bulls. Chicago will release him and he’ll be a free agent, if/when he clears waivers.

    4) I’ll say this about NFL officiating: Seems like there are lot fewer penalties called in playoff games than during the regular season- they should call fewer penalties all the time.

    3) Watching the Australian Open tennis tournament, they have a camera in the net at Rod Laver Arena, which gives them some cool replays. Kind of like the camera in the pylon by the goal line at football games, whoever decided that was a good idea deserves a raise.

    2) From Mike Teevan: Tom Brady was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 18th round of the 1995 baseball draft; Jared Goff’s dad Jerry was a major league catcher for six years; he played 55 games for the Expos, in 1990, 92.

    1) Adam Long is a 31-year old golf journeyman who was making only his 6th PGA Tour start when he won the Desert Classic this past weekend, beating Phil Mickelson, Adam Hadwin by a stroke.

Getting your first PGA Tour win is a life-changing event; Long won $1,062,000 and now has a two-year exemption on the Tour. Huge day in his career.

Bet against this period in Predators vs Golden Knights game, and this week's NHL predictions and picks
    Monty Andrews

Viktor Arvidsson and the Nashville Predators will be taking on the Las Vegas Golden Knights in NHL action on Wednesday night.

Two of the top defensive teams in the league face off on Wednesday as the Las Vegas Golden Knights take on the Nashville Predators, headlining an action-packed week of puck action heading into the All-Star Break. Here are the top games, betting trends and tips to monitor as the first half of the season winds down.

    Fillin' Them Nets

The New Year has been rather kind to the Calgary Flames and Carolina Hurricanes – and not so much to their opponents. The two highest-scoring teams of the new calendar face off Tuesday night at Scotiabank Saddledome, with the Flames entering the week having scored 46 goals in 10 January games and the Hurricanes right behind them with 39 tallies. It's no surprise, then that Calgary is 10-1 O/U in its last 11 games overall while Carolina is 5-1 to the Over in its past six road games. But bettors beware: The Under has cashed in seven of their past 10 meetings.

    First is Sometimes the Worst

Bettors looking at period-by-period totals betting for Wednesday's encounter between the Nashville Predators and the Vegas Golden Knights will enjoy this. The teams have met four times in their history, and have produced just two total first-period goals. It's easily the lowest-scoring period in their head-to-head encounters, with the teams having combined for six second-period markers and seven third-period tallies. And that trend might very continue Wednesday; while Vegas ranks 10th in first-period goals (45), Nashville is 24th (39). Vegas has also allowed the seventh-fewest goals in the first (39).

Goalie Profile: Robin Lehner, New York Islanders

Surprise! The Islanders sit atop the Metropolitan Division standings thanks in large part to a five-game winning streak fueled by some sensational goaltending. Lehner has been one of the hottest goalies in the NHL over the previous month, having posted an 11-1-0 while racking up three shutouts and not allowing more than three goals at any point over that stretch. And as you might expect, the Islanders have been a premier Under play in Lehner's appearances, having gone an incredible 3-13 O/U in his previous 16 appearances dating back to Nov. 21.

Injury Update: G Tuukka Rask, Boston Bruins

The Bruins go into the final week before the break on a somber note after losing Rask to a concussion over the weekend. The veteran netminder was run into by Filip Chytil of the New York Rangers just before Chytil scored to tie Saturday's game 1-1. Fortunately for the Bruins, they don't play again until Tuesday, Jan. 29, when they tangle with the Winnipeg Jets – but there's no guarantee Rask will have recovered in time. Rask is 14-8-3 with a 2.43 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage for the Bruins, who enter the break at +2,000 to win the Stanley Cup – the 10th-best odds in the NHL.

    Hat Trick Trends:

Last week was a terrific time to lean on road 'dogs, as they converted at an unbelievable 47.2-percent clip (17-17-2) in what was easily the most unexpected league trend of the previous seven days. Underdogs on the whole were an impressive 26-20-3 for the week, improving to 42.6 percent for the season.

Ian Walsh might look nothing like Homer Simpson, but in betting circles, there has been no more beneficial homer than he. The home team has gone 26-18 ATS in the 44 games Walsh has officiated so far this season, earning a league-best 19.63 units over that span. T.J. Luxmore is close behind, with home teams going 29-18 ATS for 18.39 units.

Former Adams Division rivals Montreal and Buffalo are engaged in a new battle this season – specifically, which team is the league's best ATS play. The Canadiens enter the truncated week with an NHL-best 32 covers in 50 games, but the Sabres are right on their heels with 31 covers through their first 50 contests.
