Huberdeau helps Panthers beat Capitals for 1st win
    October 20, 2018
    By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) Jonathan Huberdeau had a goal, two assists and the shootout winner as the Florida Panthers recovered after giving up a three-goal lead in the second period and beat the Washington Capitals 6-5 on Friday night for their first victory of the season.

In a wacky, back-and-forth game, Florida squandered a 4-1 advantage and allowed the tying goal with 1:25 left. The Panthers couldn't score in overtime despite a power play but celebrated a win for the first time this season in their fifth game after Huberdeau beat Copley in the fourth round of the shootout.

Vincent Trocheck also had a goal and two assists and scored in the shootout for the Panthers. Backup goaltender Michael Hutchinson stopped 10 of the 11 shots he faced in regulation and overtime and made a couple of more saves in the shootout after replacing starter James Reimer.

Evgenii Dadonov, Colton Sceviour and Jared McCann also scored for the Panthers, who chased Stanley Cup winning goalie Braden Holtby with four goals on 11 shots. Holtby was hardly to blame as the victim of a handful of inexplicable mistakes and turnovers by his teammates.

Following John Carlson's early goal, the Capitals tied it in the second period when Brett Connolly, Jakub Vrana and Devante Smith-Pelly scored in a span of less than 12 minutes.

    WILD 3, STARS 1

DALLAS (AP) - Ryan Suter scored the winning goal in the third period and had two assists as Minnesota beat Dallas.

Dallas goalie Ben Bishop had stopped a shot by Eric Staal, but the puck went into the left corner. Suter sent the puck back in front, and it ricocheted in off the Stars' Esa Lindell with 7:06 left.

Devan Dubnyk made 33 saves for Minnesota in a game that was scoreless until 36 seconds into the third period, when the Stars' Jason Spezza scored his first of the season. He tipped in Miro Heiskanen's shot from the left point.

Matt Dumba put in a loose rebound past Bishop at 9:37 of the third to tie the score.

Bishop also finished with 33 saves, and Zach Parise scored into an empty net with 1 minute left.

    PREDATORS 5, FLAMES 3

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Zac Rinaldo scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period to lead Nashville to its fourth straight win.

Kevin Fiala and Filip Forsberg each had a goal and an assist, and Ryan Johansen and Craig Smith also scored for the Predators.

After Noah Hanifin got caught pinching, Rinaldo broke out on a 2-on-1 with Ryan Hartman and hung onto the puck the whole way before beating Flames goalie Mike Smith on his blocker side with a perfect wrist shot into the top corner at 6:31 of the third to give Nashville a 4-3 lead.

Forsberg sealed the win with an empty-netter with 32 seconds left.

Pekka Rinne had 15 saves on 18 shots before leaving with just under 15 minutes left in the third. Juuse Saros stopped all nine shots he faced.

Elias Lindholm got his team-leading fifth goal for Calgary, and Matthew Tkachuk and Sam Bennett also scored. Smith finished with 25 saves.

    Saturday’s six-pack

    — I’m not a big fan of 9:30 Sunday morning NFL games from London.

    — Former Tennessee coach Butch Jones is now an assistant at Alabama.

    — Raptors 113, Celtics 101— Really good game, better with Hubie Brown as analyst.

    — Nets 107, Knicks 105— Caris LeVert with GW hoop; Knicks had only 3 turnovers (+19).

    — Warriors 124, Jazz 123— Utah led this game 81-68 at halftime.

    — NBA’s salary floor is $91.6M; the salary cap is $101.8M.

    Quote of the Day
“Um, not as fast as you guys think it’s going to happen. I always kind of compare it to like instant oatmeal. It is not that fast. It takes a while to get to where you can close your eyes and know exactly where your guys are.”
Lebron James, on how long it will take for the Lakers’ chemistry to develop

    Saturday’s quiz
Which four NBA teams came over from the ABA when the ABA folded in 1976?

    Friday’s quiz
Olympia is the state capital of Washington.

    Thursday’s quiz
Five current major league managers have won a World Series as a manager; Bochy, Hinch, Francona, Maddon, Yost.

    **************************

    Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…..

    13) G-League President Malcolm Turner announced that the league is implementing a “professional path” for would-be one and done college basketball players. The G-League will be offering $125,000 contracts, as well as access to NBA infrastructure and development tools.

Curious how many kids take this route, instead of playing college ball for a year?

    12) Random movie trivia; remember when Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was a co-pilot with Peter Graves in the classic comedy Airplane!?

Kareem was on The Rich Eisen Show Wednesday; he said when the writers of Airplane! were casting the movie, they wanted Pete Rose to be the co-pilot, but they were filming during the summer and obviously, Rose was unavailable since that is also baseball season, so they chose Kareem to play the role.

    11) More trivia from the past; New Orleans Saints had the first pick in the 1981 Draft; Dallas Cowboys called the Saints and offered them a ton for the #1 pick, but the Saints kept the pick and took South Carolina RB George Rogers.

Turns out the Cowboys wanted the guy who got picked #2; a linebacker named Lawrence Taylor. Wonder whatever happened to him?

    10) There are players from 43 countries in the NBA; for the 5th year in a row, every NBA team had at least one international player.

    9) NFL stuff:
    — QB Brock Osweiler will start again for the Dolphins this week.
    — Buffalo will start QB Derek Anderson at Indianapolis. Anderson has started only four times (2-2) since 2010- his career W-L record is 20-27.
    — Arizona Cardinals fired OC Mike McCoy Friday.
    — Browns traded RB Carlos Hyde to Jacksonville for a 5th-round draft pick.

    8) Tremendous catch by Andrew Benitendi to end Game 4 of the Red Sox-Astros series late Wednesday night; he misses that ball, and Houston ties the game, maybe wins it right there.

It is also an example of how a ballpark with a very short LF fence occasionally takes hits away from the batter. No way is Benitendi that shallow if he’s playing in a ballpark other than Houston or Fenway.

    7) Wednesday, Milwaukee’s Brandon Woodruff became 8th reliever in postseason history to strike out 8+ batters in a game. Before him, Pedro Martinez, was the last to do that, in the ’99 ALDS, Game 5 at Cleveland.

Of course, Woodruff wasn’t really a reliever, but Wade Miley walked the first hitter, a lefty, and was then lifted, so technically Woodruff relieved.

    6) Falcons’ WR Julio Jones has the 2nd-most receiving yards (707) in the NFL this season but hasn’t scored a touchdown yet; he’s now gone 11 straight regular-season games without a TD catch, which is really odd for someone with his ability.

    5) My Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook came in the mail yesterday; time to get serious studying college basketball.

In the last seven years, seven different teams have won the Big West conference tournament.

    4) Speaking of the Big West, Mark Gottfried is the new basketball coach at Cal State-Northridge; one of his assistants is 80-year old Jim Harrick, who won a national title with UCLA in 1995.

    3) Jaguars’ owner Shad Khan dropped his attempt to buy Wembley Stadium in London, which means the Jaguars won’t be playing half their home games there anytime soon.

    2) Thru six games, Kansas City Chiefs have allowed 2,042 passing yards, the most PY any team has allowed thru six games, since 1940.

    1) Here’s the thing about stealing signs: if you steal signals in football/baseball with the naked eye, more power to you; if you steal signals via technology, then you’re a cheater. Those are the rules.

Skinner's hat trick leads Sabres over struggling Kings
    October 20, 2018
    By The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) Jeff Skinner scored three goals for his fifth career hat trick and the Buffalo Sabres' reconfigured top line keyed a 5-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday.

Jason Pominville had a goal and two assists for his 700th career point, and Jack Eichel added three assists after Sabres coach Phil Housley shuffled his lines in an effort to revive an offense that was held to one goal in three of the past four games.

Zach Bogosian also scored and Linus Ullmark made 19 saves for Buffalo.

Drew Doughty had a goal and Jonathan Quick made 21 saves for the Kings, who lost their fourth straight game. Quick has allowed 10 goals on 54 shots in two starts since returning from a lower-body injury.

    AVALANCHE 3, HURRICANES 1

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Gabriel Landeskog scored twice to give him six goals in three games, Nathan MacKinnon added a goal and two assists and Colorado beat Carolina.

Landeskog, fresh off a hat trick against New Jersey, opened the scoring late in the first period and added another goal midway through the second. His seven goals through eight games this season are tied for third most in the NHL.

MacKinnon scored late in the third and assisted on both of Landeskog's goals for the Avalanche. Philipp Grubauer stopped 42 shots.

Micheal Ferland scored and Curtis McElhinney made 19 saves for the Hurricanes, who have lost three straight after a 4-0-1 start.

Carolina outshot Colorado 43-22. The Hurricanes have outshot their opponents in all three games during their losing streak.

    FLYERS 5, DEVILS 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jake Voracek had a goal and had two assists, and Philadelphia played some solid defense to beat New Jersey.

Voracek, who was demoted from the Flyers' top line, took a loose puck at center ice and kept it himself on a 2-on-1 breakaway, beating Keith Kinkaid for his third goal of the season to put the Flyers ahead 3-2 with 3:10 remaining.

Travis Konecny and Nolan Patrick also scored, and Scott Laughton and Wayne Simmonds added empty-net goals for the Flyers, who limited the Devils to just 21 shots. Philadelphia had allowed four goals or more in five of its first seven games.

Brian Elliott, who was pulled after giving up four goals to the Florida Panthers last Tuesday, bounced back to make 19 saves and earn his second win of the season.

Damon Severson and Brian Boyle scored for the Devils, who have lost two straight games after winning their first four. Kinkaid made 16 saves.

    COYOTES 5, JETS 3

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Three Jets scored their first goals of the season, defenseman Jacob Trouba had three assists and Winnipeg beat Arizona.

Tyler Myers, Josh Morrissey and Mathieu Perreault each found the net for the first time. Adam Lowry scored his fourth of the season and Blake Wheeler added an empty-netter.

Backup goalie Laurent Brossoit stopped 42 shots for his second victory in two starts as the Jets improved to 3-0-1 on their six-game homestand.

Clayton Keller scored twice and Christian Fischer had a goal for Arizona.

Antti Raanta made 27 saves for the Coyotes, who haven't won in Winnipeg since the Jets moved from Atlanta to Manitoba in 2011.

    BLACKHAWKS 4, BLUE JACKETS 1

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Patrick Kane had two goals and an assist, Corey Crawford stopped 37 shots to get his first win in nearly 10 months, and Chicago beat Columbus.

Alex DeBrincat and Marcus Kruger also scored for the Blackhawks, who earned a point for the sixth time in seven games (4-1-2).

Crawford was playing his second game since a concussion suffered in a win at New Jersey last Dec. 23.

Zach Werenski scored for Columbus and Sergei Bobrovsky finished with 22 saves.

Kruger put the Blackhawks ahead for good when he tipped a wrister from Alexander Fortin past Bobrovsky at 7:43 of the third. Kane then scored twice 2:37 apart.

    BLUES 4, MAPLE LEAFS 1

TORONTO (AP) - Ryan O'Reilly scored his first goal with St. Louis, and Jake Allen made 22 saves to lead the Blues.

Robert Bortuzzo, Zach Sanford and Ivan Barbashev also scored, and David Perron added two assists as St. Louis picked up its second victory in seven games this season.

Morgan Rielly scored for Toronto. Frederik Andersen stopped 21 of 24 shots as the Leafs dropped consecutive games after five straight wins.

Toronto had scored an NHL-high 33 goals in seven games to open the season. But the Maple Leafs were shut out by the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday and were scoreless in two periods against the Blues, going 116 minutes 37 seconds without a goal until Rielly cut the deficit to 3-1 early in the third.

    RED WINGS 4, PANTHERS 3

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Gustav Nyquist scored 3:44 into overtime to lift Detroit to its first win of the season.

Dennis Cholowski had a goal and an assist, and Thomas Vanek and Dylan Larkin also scored for the Red Wings, who were 0-5-2 in their first seven games. Jimmy Howard stopped 34 shots.

On the winner, Nyquist grabbed a loose puck and his shot from the slot beat goalie Michael Hutchinson on the left side.

Trailing 3-2, Florida's Mike Hoffman tied the score with 1:16 left in the third as his shot from the left circle went between Howard's pads.

Nick Bjugstad had a goal and an assist, and Keith Yandle also scored for the Panthers, who played into overtime for the fourth time in their six games. Hutchinson finished with 27 saves.

    SENATORS 4, CANADIENS 3, OT

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) - Mark Stone scored his second goal of the game 2:30 into overtime and Ottawa rallied from a two-goal deficit.

Yanni Gourde and J.T. Miller each had a goal and assist for Tampa Bay, which lost in its first road game of the season. Ryan Callahan scored his first of the season for the Lightning and Anton Stralman pushed the game into overtime with his first goal of the season with 4:58 left in the third after the Wild took their first lead of the game.

Andrei Vasilekskiy made 29 saves for Tampa Bay, which had it's three-game winning streak snapped as it played on the road after a season-opening, five-game homestand.

William Karlsson, Ryan Reaves and Jonathan Marchessault scored for the Golden Knights, who outshot the Ducks 45-18.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Brent Burns scored San Jose's first goal from a defenseman this season and Logan Couture scored his fourth goal in two games to lead the Sharks.

Martin Jones made 24 saves to earn his second straight win after opening the season with three regulation losses in his first four starts.
