    Saturday's best
    October 13, 2018
    By The Associated Press

    STARS

-Jordan Ta'amu, Mississippi, accounted for 528 yards of total offense and engineered a late game-winning drive to help the Rebels come back for a 37-33 win over Arkansas.

-Clayton Thorson, Northwestern, threw for a career-high 455 yards and three TDs to give the Wildcats a 34-31 victory over winless Nebraska.

-Devlin Hodges, Samford, threw for 438 yards and six TDs in a 73-22 victory over winless VMI.

-Alex Barnes, Kansas State, ran for 181 yards and four TDs to help the Wildcats beat Oklahoma State 31-12.

-Ladarius Skelton, Southern University, rushed for 202 yards and accounted for four TDs in a 38-0 win over Prairie View.

-Jordan Love, Utah State, passed for 322 yards and five TDs in a 59-28 victory over UNLV.

-Caylin Newton, Howard, threw for 313 yards and five TDs in a 55-13 win over Delaware State.

-Tyler King, Marshall, rushed for a career-high 195 yards with two long fourth-quarter TD runs in a 43-20 win over Old Dominion.

-D'Angelo Amos, James Madison, returned two punts of more than 80 yards for TDs in a 37-0 win over Villanova.

    ---

    ORGERON'S SIGNATURE VICTORY

LSU got a signature victory and shook up the College Football Playoff picture.

Joe Burrow passed for 200 yards and had two short touchdown runs, LSU's defense staggered Georgia's normally prolific offense, and the 13th-ranked Tigers beat the No. 2 Bulldogs 36-16 to give coach Ed Orgeron a signature victory.

Five fourth-down decisions by Orgeron influenced the result. LSU converted all four times it ran an offensive play on fourth-and-short, sustaining three drives that produced a total of 13 points.

In another instance, Orgeron called timeout and elected to punt on fourth-and-2 after the offense initially remained on the field. That decision pinned Georgia at its 4, and Kristian Fulton's interception of Jake Fromm's pass shortly afterward set up another of Cole Tracy's five field goals.

    CYCLONES TOPPLE MOUNTAINEERS

It was arguably West Virginia's biggest test, on the road at night against a plucky Iowa State team with a stifling defense and a dangerous young quarterback.

    The sixth-ranked Mountaineers failed miserably.

Freshman Brock Purdy threw for 254 yards and three TDs and Iowa State throttled West Virginia 30-14, handing the Mountaineers their first loss in emphatic fashion.

David Montgomery had a career-high 189 yards rushing for the Cyclones, who capped a wild day by beating a Top 25 team for the fifth time in seven tries after dropping 20 in a row to ranked teams.

West Virginia was the fourth Top 10 team to fall Saturday. LSU pounded No. 2 Georgia 36-16, No. 7 Washington fell 30-27 in overtime at No. 17 Oregon, and No. 8 Penn State lost to Michigan State 21-17.

    ---

    KNIGHTS RALLY

With No. 10 Central Florida struggling and the nation's longest winning streak in jeopardy, first-year coach Josh Heupel decided to take a gamble.

Facing fourth-and-1 late in the third quarter and down 13 points, Heupel sent his offense back on the field and gave the ball to Taj McGowan. With the Tigers' defense bunched at the line of scrimmage, McGowan burst through the line and went 71 yards for a touchdown.

It was just what the Knights needed and they went on to beat Memphis 31-30, running their winning streak to 19 games.

McKenzie Milton threw for 296 yards to help the Knights to their 12th straight win over the Tigers. Milton's 7-yard touchdown with 12:14 left gave UCF its first lead. The Knights trailed 30-14 with 2:04 left in the first half. The victory was by far the toughest game of the season for the Knights, who defeated their first five opponents by double digits.

    ---

    NUMBERS

11-Straight SEC losses by Tennessee before beating No. 21 Auburn 30-24.

51-Career field goals by Colorado State's Wyatt Bryan, matching Jeff Babcock's school record
