Turpin ignites No. 16 TCU in rainy 42-12 win over rival SMU
    September 7, 2018

DALLAS (AP) If No. 16 TCU was looking ahead to a showdown with Ohio State, KaVontae Turpin snapped his fellow Horned Frogs back into the present with another speedy dash to the end zone.

Turpin ignited a sluggish team by returning a punt 78 yards for a touchdown before adding a 42-yard scoring catch, and the Horned Frogs pulled away for a delayed and rain-soaked 42-12 victory over Dallas-Fort Worth rival SMU that ended early Saturday morning.

The start of the game Friday night between former Southwest Conference foes was held up nearly two hours by lightning, and a steady rain fell until halftime.

The Horned Frogs (2-0) finally secured their first seven-game winning streak in the 98-game Iron Skillet series after midnight, winning comfortably after struggling early for the third straight year. TCU has outscored SMU 83-14 in the second half the past three meetings.

Perhaps looking ahead to the fourth-ranked Buckeyes next week, TCU squandered its first two chances to take control by committing turnovers before Alec Dunham picked up a fumble by SMU quarterback Ben Hicks in stride and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown.

''We understand the next ballgame here Ohio State is not SMU,'' coach Gary Patterson said. ''Not in any aspect whatsoever. But I think our kids will know that too.''

The Mustangs (0-2) led 9-0 early in the first home game for coach Sonny Dykes, but had just 167 yards total offense after Braeden West's 51-yard scoring run on the fifth play of the game.

''I'm disappointed that we didn't play better in the second half,'' Dykes said. ''We're just not very good at the details right now. That's what's biting us in the rear end.''

Two plays before Dunham's score, Mustangs linebacker Shaine Hailey had an open field in front of him on Shawn Robinson's first career interception but was quickly dragged down by an alert Turpin.

The speedy receiver/returner pointed toward the punter looking for a block on TCU's first score, but easily ran past an unblocked Jamie Sackville anyway.

The sealing TD came when Turpin caught a short pass, ran through the middle of the secondary and split three defenders near the goal line. Turpin, who set school records with his fifth career special teams TD and fourth on a punt return, finished with 176 all-purpose yards.

    SLOWER START

A week after throwing for three touchdowns and running for two scores in the first half of a 55-7 rout of Southern University, Robinson finally found the end zone on an 18-yard run in the third quarter. That gave TCU, a three-touchdown favorite, its first comfortable lead at 28-12.

    CITY SLICKERS

The rainy first half had its zany moments. TCU punter Adam Nunez fumbled without getting touched while running after a bad snap, and the ball rolled out of bounds near the pylon for what was ruled a safety, giving SMU its 9-0 lead.

The Horned Frogs went ahead for the first time at 14-9 when receiver Jaelen Austin fell on the ball in the end zone after running back Sewo Olonilua had it knocked loose around the 10.

    THE TAKEAWAY

TCU: On the short 40-mile trip from their Fort Worth campus, the Horned Frogs drove by AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys and site of their battle with the Buckeyes. There's little question the Horned Frogs were caught looking ahead, although the long delay probably was a factor as well in leading just 14-12 into the third quarter.

SMU: The Mustangs waited a long time for a bright spot with Dykes, who chose to coach in the Frisco Bowl last year after Chad Morris left for the Arkansas job. SMU fell behind 42-3 in the first half of that season finale and trailed 36-0 in the fourth quarter of last week's 46-23 opening loss to North Texas, another Dallas-area school. Hanging with a Big 12 title contender for a half gives the Mustangs some hope.

    POLL IMPLICATIONS

The Horned Frogs aren't likely to move up much, and might be at risk of dropping a spot or two because of the early struggles against an overmatched opponent.

    UP NEXT

TCU: The Horned Frogs can't get too caught up in the Ohio State game next Saturday because the Big 12 opener is a week later at Texas, their biggest rival.

SMU: At No. 21 Michigan next Saturday.

    Quote of the Day
“I played for a tough sucker, and I was afraid of him, and we played our ass off for him because we feared him. I don’t see that with this guy. He’s chest bumping and all that. I’m the head of the corporation, I’m the CEO, I’m the chairman of the board, I’m talking to the stockholders telling them here’s how we’re going to do at the end of the quarter. I’m selling this thing. And I’m not delivering the goods, which is championships. You’ve got to face the criticism. I’m sorry, but he’s not my kind of coach. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again.”

    ****************************

Saturday’s List of 13: Things I’m looking for this weekend…….

    13) Chiefs were +45 in turnovers the last three years, in large part because Alex Smith doesn’t turn the ball over very much, but now Smith plays for the Redskins and Patrick Mahomes is the starter, with only one NFL start under his belt.

Chiefs @ Chargers might be the most interesting matchup in NFL’s Week 1.

    12) Kansas State had to rally from down 24-12 in 4th quarter vs I-AA South Dakota LW, now they’re a home underdog to Mississippi State. K-State has traditionally been profitable as a home underdog under Bill Snyder- interesting noon game.

    11) Bills made the playoffs for the first time in 19 years LY, then traded their QB away and drafted Josh Allen, who isn’t the starter yet. Buffalo has the lowest over/under win total in Las Vegas for this season- there are low expectations for their opener in Baltimore.

    10) Lane Kiffin’s Florida Atlantic squad was pummeled by Oklahoma LW; now they’re a home favorite against Air Force and its option attack— how will the Owls bounce back?

    9) Tyrod Taylor is that QB Buffalo traded away; he’s the starter in Cleveland now— the Browns have been bet down by the public. Steelers opened at -7; now they’re -4. Cleveland turned the ball over 41 times LY; if Taylor can cut that number in half, Browns will be a vastly improved team this season.

    8) Chip Kelly’s UCLA team lost as a 14-point home favorite last week; now they’re a 30-point underdog at Oklahoma. Plus, UCLA’s QB got hurt LW; thats no bueno.

    7) Sportsbooks in New Jersey are taking lot of Super Bowl bets on the Giants, so their opener with Jacksonville will be interesting.

Jaguars are 3-17 vs spread in their last 20 games vs NFC teams, but they made the playoffs LY, while the Giants were going 3-13.

    6) Detroit Tigers’ two TV announcers apparently got into a fight after Tuesday night’s game and were not on the air for Wednesday’s game. Imagine if that had happened during the game? Will these guys ever work together again? They might’ve ruined both of their careers.

    5) Jets’ rookie Sam Darnold will become the youngest player in Super Bowl era to start at QB in a Week 1 game. New Lions’ coach Matt Patricia went to college at RPI, near where I live, in Troy, NY. Patricia’s defenses in New England stopped the Jets; how will his Detroit defense do?

    4) USC at Stanford is an interesting game in the Pac-12; Trojans are starting a true freshman QB who left high school a year early, so he should really still be in HS. Awful young to be a starter.

    3) Jameis Winston is suspended for the first three games this season, so the Buccaneers head to New Orleans with Ryan Fitzpatrick as their starting QB. Biggest spread of Week 1; can the Bucs hang with their division rival with their backup QB starting?

    2) Herm Edwards started his Arizona State tenure with a 49-7 win over Texas-San Antonio (the Roadrunners!!!) last week; now Michigan State is coming to town. Big jump in class.

Supposed to be 107 in Tempe Saturday night; will conditioning be a factor?

    1) Norv Turner is Carolina’s new offensive coordinator; Turner coaching Cam Newton’s offense promises to be fascinating. Having the Cowboys in town for the opener and the 4:25 FOX game adds to the build-up.

    Enjoy the games this weekend!!!!

CFL Betting Notes - Week 14
    David Schwab

There were quite a few twists and turns in Week 13 with the results having an impact on the playoff race in each division. British Columbia got things started by picking up a key win in the West with Friday night’s 26-14 victory over Ottawa as a slight 1 -point home favorite.

In the first of three games on Saturday, Hamilton closed the gap in the East by beating Toronto 36-25 as a five-point favorite on the road. Saskatchewan continued its winning ways by knocking off Winnipeg 32-27 as a four-point road underdog and Edmonton evened up its home-and-home series against Calgary with a 48-42 upset as a two-point underdog at home.

    Friday, Sept. 14

British Columbia Lions (4-6 SU, 6-4 ATS) at Montreal Alouettes (3-8 SU, 5-6 ATS)

    Point-spread: BC -3
    Total: 49

    Game Overview

BC continues to bring up the rear in the West, but with last week’s win it is still in contention for a crossover position in the playoffs. The Lions have covered against the spread in five of their last seven games with the total staying UNDER or ending as a PUSH in six of those seven contests. One injury note for this Friday is quarterback Travis Lulay, who remains in concussion protocol.

Montreal is coming off a bye after stunning Ottawa 21-11 in Week 12 as a heavy 16-point road underdog. This was the Alouettes second straight-up win in a row and they have now covered in their last four games. Earlier in the season, Montreal traded for quarterback Johnny Manziel, but it may have found its new starter in Antonio Pipkin. He has completed 64.3 percent of his 84 passing attempts for 762 yards through three previous starts.

    Betting Trends

-- The Lions have won their last five games against the Alouettes both SU and ATS with the total going OVER in seven of the last 10 meetings in Montreal. BC started this season with a 22-10 victory against Montreal as an 8 -point favorite at home.

    Saturday, Sept. 15

Calgary Stampeders (9-2 SU, 6-5 ATS) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (6-5 SU, 5-5-1 ATS)

    Point-spread: Calgary -1
    Total: 53

    Game Overview

Calgary’s breathing room in the West Division title race just became a bit tighter with the loss to its bitter rivals. It is 2-2 SU in its last four games and 1-4 ATS in its last five outings. The total went way OVER 50 points against Edmonton in Week 13 and it has gone OVER in four of the Stampeders last six games. Their points-allowed average has ballooned to 33.5 over their past four contests. Calgary trailed by 20 points in Saturday’s loss heading into the fourth quarter.

The Tiger-Cats have worked their way into a tie for first in the East with a SU three-game winning streak. They have covered in their last two games with the total going OVER in each outing. They are 2-3 ATS at home this season with the total going OVER in three of the five games. Jeramiah Masoli threw for 307 yards and four touchdowns in Saturday’s win at Toronto and Hamilton piled up another 117 yards on the ground.

    Betting Trends

-- Calgary has covered in five of its last six road games against the Tiger-Cats and the total has stayed UNDER in five of those six games. Back in Week 1, the Stampeders hammered out a 28-14 victory at home against Hamilton as 7 -point favorites.

Ottawa RedBlacks (6-5 SU, 4-7 ATS) at Saskatchewan Roughriders (7-4 SU, 7-4 ATS)
    Point-spread: Saskatchewan OFF
    Total: OFF

    Game Overview

The RedBlacks have started the second half of their season with back-to-back losses both SU and ATS with the total staying UNDER in each game. They started the season with a 40-17 romp over Saskatchewan as two-point home favorites, but they have only managed to score a combined 25 points in those two recent setbacks. Trevor Harris threw a pair of interceptions in the loss to BC and he now has nine picks on the year against 11 touchdown throws.

The longest current winning streak in the CFL belongs to Saskatchewan at four games both SU and ATS. The recent sweep of Winnipeg with a combined 63 points scored has raised the Roughriders’ scoring average of the year to 25.3 points per game. Much of the team’s recent success could be pinned to the play of quarterback Zach Collaros, but he left Saturday’s game against the Blue Bombers in the fourth quarter with an undisclosed injury.

    Betting Trends

-- The Roughriders have a SU 4-2 edge in its last six games against Ottawa. However, the RedBlacks have covered the spread in six of the last nine meetings. The total has gone OVER in six of the last seven meetings in Saskatchewan.

    GAME RECAP

DEFENCE DOMINANT AS LIONS DOWN ALS 32-14

MONTREAL — A strong defensive performance earned the BC Lions a 32-14 victory over the Montreal Alouettes on Friday night at Percival Molson Stadium.

The BC defence dominated the line of scrimmage, sacking Montreal quarterback Antonio Pipkin seven times and forcing the young Als pivot into four interceptions. Offensively, Lions quarterback Jonathon Jennings was a respectable 19-for-30 with a touchdown and interception in relief of Travis Lulay, who left the game early in the first quarter with a shoulder injury.

Coordinator Mark Washington’s BC defence featured some gaudy numbers: Davon Coleman and Shawn Lemon each recorded a pair of sacks, Anthony Orange had two interceptions and Bo Lokombo registered an interception and a sack in the win.

A pair of fourth quarter pick-six touchdowns put the game to bed and added emphasis to what had already been an outrageously good performance by the BC defence.

The win was the Lions’ first of the 2018 season on the road, and moved Wally Buono’s squad into the crossover playoff spot — level on 10 points with Winnipeg, but ahead based on a game in-hand.

The visitors gained momentum on the opening possession, as BC linebacker Bo Lokombo rose above Montreal’s Ernest Jackson to intercept an Antonio Pipkin pass.

Lulay’s first pass attempt then went for a 41-yard completion to Bryan Burnham, setting the Lions up inside the red zone. The veteran BC quarterback suffered a shoulder injury on the next play — an overthrown end zone shot to Shaq Johnson — and was forced from the game.

Jennings came in off the bench and immediately zipped his first pass to Burnham for a 16-yard touchdown; Ty Long‘s convert gave the Lions a 7-0 lead.

With both defences dominating, it took a key mistake — Pipkin’s second interception of the day, this time to Anthony Orange — to change the scoreboard, as Long and the Lions booted a 25-yard field goal to make it a 10-point game.

Led by some strong William Stanback runs, Montreal’s offence strung together a pair of prolonged drives that resulted in two Boris Bede field goals — one from 46, the other from 29 yards out — and sent the teams to the locker room with BC in front 10-6.

A booming punt single from Bede cut the Alouette deficit to three early in the third quarter, but Long and the Lions responded with a 30-yard field goal to make it a 13-6 ballgame.

BC appeared on the brink of adding to their lead late in the third quarter, as Ty Long set up for a chip-shot 15-yard field goal; Chip Cox broke through the line to block the attempt, and Tevaughn Campbell recovered the loose ball then sprinted 87 yards to pay dirt. Bede’s subsequent convert gave the Als their first lead of the night.

Jennings responded by marching the Lions into field goal range, and the visitors regained the lead two minutes into the fourth quarter via 45-yard Ty Long field goal.

The BC defence continued to dominate, and forced Montreal to concede a safety.

T.J. Lee then sealed the victory for the Lions with a pick-six on a Pipkin throw, as the Eastern Washington product made a perfect read, broke on a pass and took it 37 yards to the house.

Orange followed Lee’s interception up with an exclamation point, hauling in a gift from Pipkin and turning it into a 54-yard pick-six of his own. Long’s convert polished off the night’s scoring and sent the Lions home with an emphatic 18-point win.

The victory moved BC to 5-6 on the season; Wally Buono’s squad will now return home for a date with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (6-5) next Saturday (10 p.m. ET).

Montreal fell to 3-9 with the loss; Mike Sherman’s team will face the Bombers (5-7) in a must-win contest next Friday (8:30 p.m. ET) at IGF.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 15
    David Schwab

In a shortened Week 14 schedule in the CFL, British Columbia climbed out of last place in the West Division with an important 32-14 victory against Montreal on Friday as a three-point road favorite.

Saturday’s doubleheader of betting action north of the border started with Calgary rolling over Hamilton 43-28 as a slight 2 -point favorite on the road. Later that night, Ottawa regained first place in the East Division with a 30-25 upset against Saskatchewan as a five-point underdog on the road.

    Friday, Sept. 21

Montreal Alouettes (3-9 SU, 6-6 ATS) at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (5-7 SU, 5-6-1 ATS)

    Point-spread: Winnipeg -10
    Total: 52

    Game Overview

The Alouettes’ brief two-game straight-up winning streak came to an end on Friday with the loss to British Columbia. This was the first time they failed to cover against the spread in their last five contests. Antonio Pipkin continued to get the call at quarterback, but struggled to complete just 50 percent of his 22 passing attempts for a total of 95 yards passing while also tossing four interceptions. The only bright spot in that game was his 69 yards rushing on nine carries.

Winnipeg comes of its bye week with a four-game losing streak both SU and ATS. In the first meeting this season against Montreal, the Blue Bombers cruised to a 56-10 victory as three-point favorites on the road. They are 3-2-1 ATS in six previous home games this season and 4-3-1 ATS when closing as a favorite. The total has gone OVER the closing line in six of their last seven games.

    Betting Trends

-- Montreal has a 3-1-1 edge ATS in its last five road games against the Blue Bombers and the total has stayed UNDER in four of the last six meetings in Winnipeg.

    Saturday, Sept. 22

Edmonton Eskimos (7-5 SU, 6-6 ATS) at Ottawa RedBlacks (7-5 SU, 5-7 ATS)

    Point-spread: Edmonton -3
    Total: 54

    Game Overview

The Eskimos are three games off the pace in the West Division title race. They went into last week’s bye following a crucial 48-42 upset against Calgary as two-point home underdogs to keep the Stampeders within striking distance in this race. Edmonton has been able to cover in its last three outings and the total has stayed UNDER in two of those three games. It is just 2-4 SU on the road this season with an even 3-3 record ATS.

Ottawa has been on a roller-coaster ride for most of the season, but its SU 7-5 record is good enough to set the pace in the East. The inconsistent play of quarterback Trevor Harris is part of the reason for the up and down play overall, but he was on against the Roughriders on Saturday with 334 yards passing and two scoring strikes. The RedBlacks got a big effort from William Powell running the ball with 148 yards rushing on 18 carries.

    Betting Trends

-- Edmonton has gone 4-2 both SU and ATS in its last six road games against the RedBlacks with the total staying UNDER in five of those six matchups.

Saskatchewan Roughriders (7-5 SU, 7-5 ATS) at Toronto Argonauts (3-8 SU, 4-7 ATS)
    Point-spread: Saskatchewan -3
    Total: 51

    Game Overview

The Roughriders remain in the thick of the playoff race in the West despite Saturday’s loss. This was their first defeat either SU or ATS in their last five games. The total went OVER 50 points against Ottawa and it has gone OVER in four of their previous five outings. Zack Collaros got banged up in a Week 13 victory over Winnipeg, but he was back under center on Saturday night. He completed just 10-of-27 throws for 162 yards and one touchdown against two interceptions.

The Argonauts went into last week’s bye with a three-game losing streak both SU and ATS. They started the season with a 27-19 road loss to Saskatchewan as 2 -point favorites. The total stayed UNDER 49 points in that Week 1 loss, but it has gone OVER in five of Toronto’s last seven games. It is 2-1 (SU and ATS) in its last three home games as part of an even 3-3 SU record at home this season.

    Betting Trends

-- Toronto has failed to cover in five of its last seven home games against the Roughriders and it is 1-4 (SU and ATS) in its last five games against Saskatchewan overall. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the last six meetings.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (6-6 SU, 5-6-1 ATS) at British Columbia Lions (5-6 AU, 7-4 ATS)
    Point-spread: OFF
    Total: OFF

    Game Overview

The Tiger-Cats’ three-game SU winning streak came to an end with the loss to Calgary and the total has now gone OVER in their last three games after going OVER 51 points against the Stampeders. Jeramiah Masoli did not have one of his best days passing the ball with zero touchdown throws against two interceptions. He remains the second-leading passer in the CFL with 3,786 yards in 12 games. He has 16 touchdown passes on the year with 13 interceptions.

BC continues to battle it way into playoff contention with a pair of victories (SU and ATS) in its last two games. The total stayed UNDER 48 points in Friday’s win in Montreal and it has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in the Lions’ last six games. The bad news from Friday’s win was quarterback Travis Lulay’s separated shoulder. Jonathon Jennings took his place under center and he completed 19-of-30 passing attempts for 180 yards and one touchdown throw.

    Betting Trends

-- BC has won four of its last five games against the Tiger-Cats both SU and ATS with the total going OVER in seven of the last 10 games between the two. This will be the first meeting this season as part of an upcoming home-and-home series.
