    Dinero Tracker - Feb. 12
    February 12, 2018

Read the Dinero Tracker's mission statement here
    Last night's ATS Records
    NBA: 4-5 | NCAA BB: 7-3

After leading the NBA day off with an in-game parlay win behind the surging Raptors, the rest of my Sunday walk through the pros was filled with unpleasant surprises. College came through at a 70 percent clip, pushing the weekend tally to 14-for-18. The NBA lock is now 18-for-27 (66.7%) since Jan. 11. Here's Sunday's recap, complete with some of the highlights (and lowlights):

    MONDAY'S FREE SELECTION

    The pick: Bulls -4
The Bulls are starting to get all their pieces back, as there's a chance Kris Dunn may even suit up and play some tonight to get his conditioning up. He'd provide a boost, but this pick is simply about riding Fred Hoiberg's new-found depth with Lauri Markkanen back from paternity leave and Zach LaVine getting more comfortable with his minutes restrictions loosening up. The Magic are still depleted and now hit the road, where it's easier to fade. This is Orlando's first game outside of Florida since Jan. 30. Ride Chicago and lay the points.

    SUNDAY'S FREE SELECTION

    The pick: Duke -9
The Blue Devils have been a major disappointment in that they're far too talented to be so incompetent on defense, but these are all good lessons for them to be learning with the NCAA Tournament still one month away. My expectation for today's trip to Atlanta is that they'll take advantage of Georgia Tech's offensive shortcomings to gain some confidence, find a rhythm and win by double-digits. Lay the points and ride Duke.

Result: The line dipped with the news Marvin Bagley III was getting the day off, but the Blue Devils tweaked the lineup, committed to defending and raced out to a huge edge, leading by as much as 26 points. The Yellow Jackedts went on a 15-2 run and nearly slipped through the backdoor like slimy snakes as they pressed and got free-throw misses and were one 3-point make away from breaking freebie pick hearts, but we came through alright in the end.

    SUNDAY'S LOCK

The pick: Penn State ML -125
The Illini fell to Wisconsin on Thursday and has largely struggled on the defensive end in their first season under new head coach Brad Underwood. The Nittany Lions have won four of five to rescue their NCAA Tournament aspirations, climbing above .500 in Big Ten play. Beating Ohio State in Columbus was the big win in that mix, while the remaining schedule following this trip into Champaign will give them four opportunities to add a quality win to their resume before the conference tournament, so it's important to get this one in the win column and continue building positive momentum. Look for Tony Carr to deliver and ride Penn State on the money line to avoid laying the bucket on the road, guaranteed.

Result: The Nittany Lions broke open a game that was basically even at the break by scoring the first 12 points of teh second half, holding Illinois scoreless for over seven minutes. Penn State held the Illini to 27.3 percent shooting in the second half.

    LOCK THAT DIDN'T CLICK

    The pick: Pacers -9
The Knicks are unsure if they'll have Enes Kanter back as he deals with a mouth injury, and they'll be breaking in newly acquired guard Emmanuel Mudiay. On the road, expect a strong game from the Pacers to produce a blowout. Lay the points and ride Indiana for Sunday's guaranteed NBA winner.
NOTE: Kanter is in, so the line dipped some. I still dig Indiana to win by 10+ For the in-game parlay, ride the over.

Result: The Pacers had this game under control throughout, led by another big night from All-Star Victor Oladipo, but obtaining the cover just wasn't meant to be. Kanter played, so this line dipped to where most pushed on the Pacers, but even that feels hollow considering they were up by as many as 20. New York never quit, getting a spark from the newly acquired Mudiay in losing only 121-113.

    TOTAL RECALL

The pick: Loyola (Md.)/Lafayette OVER 142
Loyola guard Andre Walker scored 43 points and knocked down six 3-pointers when these teams played in Baltimore last month, but you can bank on Matt Klienewski and the Leopards to get even at home here. Take advantage of this Patriot League clash being on the board and ride Lafayette and the over for the in-game parlay.

Result: Lafayette came through, both with the win and in scoring effectively enough in the second half to comfortably get us an in-game parlay win in their 84-67 victory.

    SWING AND A MISS

    The pick: Celtics -4
The Celtics have a huge advantage in getting to play this one at home while the Cavs have to figure one another all out following their hectic trade deadline activity. With Kyrie Irving set to work out his latest crop of replacements, George Hill and Jordan Clarkson, I'd expect him to have a big day. Ride Boston and lay the points.

Result: While there was certainly an expectation that LeBron would do his part in trying to spoil Paul Pierce's big day in Boston, I didn't see his new teammates producing as effectively as they managed to against a Celtics team that plays so well at home. Not even a juiced-up atmosphere could prevent the Cavs from punking Boston.

    PROOF OF CLAIRVOYANCE

The pick: Raptors ML -150/OVER 215.5
The Hornets haven't been home since Feb. 2 and will be playing in their building for just the second time in a nine-game span after returning from a Western swing where they won only at Phoenix. The Raptors have scored an average of 127.5 points in a pair of wins against Charlotte this season and should be able to get acclimated nicely here since they're used to Sunday afternoon games. Ride Toronto on the money line and back the over for the in-game parlay.

Result: Despite falling behind 10-0, the Raptors imposed their will by the end of the first quarter and coasted to a 123-103 win in Charlotte, ultimately winning every quarter. Toronto now enters the week with the Eastern Conference's top winning percentage.

    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

    — Bucknell 65, Colgate 64— Bison trailed by 8 with 0:33 left to play.

    — Jazz 101, Spurs 99– Red-hot Utah wins its 10th game in a row.

    — Baylor 74, Texas 73 2OT— Bears won their 4th game in a row.

    — Portland Pilots are 10-17, 4-10 in the WCC, but they covered their last eight games.

    — Andy Kennedy is out after 12 years as Ole Miss’ basketball coach; this is the first time in seven years Ole Miss is under .500 in the SEC.

    — Green Bay Packers’ 2018 opponents combined to go 135-115 this past year, so they have the “hardest” schedule in the NFL next season.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Scanning college basketball conferences

    13) AAC— Cincinnati is 12-0, has a 3-game lead over Wichita State/Houston; I’m thinking all three of these teams make the NCAA’s, but no one else from this league.

    12) ACC— Virginia is 12-1, has a 2-game lead over Clemson; surprising. 2014 was last time neither Duke/North Carolina finished 1-2 in the ACC (Virginia/Syracuse). That is the only time since 2002 that has happened.

    11) Atlantic 14— Rhode Island Rams are 12-0, have a 4-game lead over both St Bonaventure, Davidson; URI should be in the NCAA’s, but everyone else looks like a longshot to make the Field of 68. Richmond is 7-5 in the A-14, but only 9-15 overall.

    10) Big 14— Surprising Ohio State leads Purdue/Michigan State, who were expected to be very good. Michigan should get in with a strong finish; upstarts Nebraska/Penn State are fighting to get off the bubble. OSU coach Holtmann might be national Coach of the Year.

    9) Big X— Best league in the country; Texas Tech leads Kansas by a game, West Virginia by 1.5 games. Jayhawks won last 13 regular season titles, so Tech winning the league would be a huge upset. Seven of ten teams in this league are in KenPom’s top 50 in the country.

    8) Big East— Xavier/Villanova are in a virtual tie for first place; Musketeers are 8-0 in Big East games decided by 7 or fewer points. Villanova has some injury issues right now, but hope to have everyone back for the postseason.

    7) Big Sky— Montana is 13-0, leads Weber State by two games, which doesn’t mean a whole lot, since the conference tournament is on a neutral floor and only the tournament winner will get into the NCAA’s. 9-3 Idaho is 33-15 in conference games the last three seasons.

    6) Big West— Cal-Santa Barbara leads Cal-Irvine by half a game; Anteaters were 5-11 when conference play started- they’re #299 experience team in country. UCSB was 6-22 last year; new coach Joe Pasternack has used transfers to get the Gauchos back on track.

    5) Colonial— Charleston leads Northeastern by a game; Huskies just won the Beanpot hockey tourney for first time in 30 years- maybe this is their year. This is a one-bid league and their conference tournament will be really wide open.

    4) Horizon— 26th-ranked league was 14th three years ago; defections of Loyola, Valparaiso have crippled league. Northern Kentucky leads way this year, with Wright State game behind and UIC game behind them. Another one-bid league.

    3) MAAC— Rider/Canisius are tied for the top; Niagara is in 3rd place, Iona in 4th. Conference tournament is in beautiful downtown Albany, but Siena is awful so that shouldn’t matter much. Right now, the 4-5 game would be Iona-Manhattan, which would be very interesting.

    2) MAC— Buffalo/Toledo have three less losses than anyone else in MAC and are only teams in league ranked higher than #168. Will be disappointing if they don’t meet in MAC title game.

    1) Missouri Valley— Loyola-Chicago has 2-game lead over Southern Illinois, but Ramblers haven’t been in NCAA’s since 1985, so they’ll have lot of pressure on them in Arch Madness.

    Tuesday's Wagers
    February 13, 2018

    **Oklahoma at Texas Tech**

-- As of early this morning, Texas Tech (21-4 straight up, 12-9 against the spread) was installed as a 7.5-point favorite with a total of 156.

-- Texas Tech is atop the Big 12 standings les than 24 hours before Valentine’s Day. This development means Kansas’s 13-year streak of winning Big 12 regular-season titles is in jeopardy. The Red Raiders are 9-3 in conference action and lead KU by one game and WVU by 1.5.

-- Chris Beard’s second team in Lubbock is undefeated in 15 home games with a 6-5 spread record.

-- Texas Tech star Keenan Evans is one of the country’s most underrated players. Evans is averaging team-highs in scoring (18.4 points per game), assists (3.3 APG) and steals (1.4 SPG). Jarrett Culver (11.0 PPG) and Zhaire Smith can both shoot it from deep, knocking down 38.5 and 38.1 percent of their 3-point launches, respectively.

-- Texas Tech is No. 11 in the RPI Rankings, producing a 3-1 record against the Top 25, a 5-3 record versus the Top 50 and a 13-4 mark against the Top 100. The Red Raiders have home triumphs over the likes of Nevada, West Virginia, Texas, Baylor, Kansas State, Oklahoma State and Iowa State They have won at KU, at TCU, at South Carolina and at Kansas State, in addition to neutral-court wins vs. Northwestern and Boston College.

-- Oklahoma (16-8 SU, 8-15 ATS) beat Texas Tech 75-65 as a 2.5-point home favorite on Jan. 9. The 140 combined points finished well ‘under’ the 162-point tally. OU freshman star guard Trae Young scored 27 points and dished out 10 assists. Young had four steals but also committed four turnovers. He went 7-of-23 on field-goal attempts, burying 4-of-10 from 3-point land. Christian James added 15 points and four rebounds, while Khadeem Lattin had 11 points, eight boards and seven blocked shots.

-- Oklahoma has lost outright in three consecutive games and six of its past nine. Even worse, OU has failed to cover the number five straight outings and is 1-8 ATS in its last nine contests.

-- Lon Kruger’s team is an abysmal 2-6 both SU and ATS in eight road assignments.

-- Young leads the nation in scoring (29.5 PPG) and assists (9.4 APG). He also has a team-best 45 steals. James (11.9 PPG, 4.9 RPG) has hit 37.4 percent of his 3-balls, while Brady Manek (11.4 PPG, 5.6 RPG) has made 41.3 percent of his 3’s. Lattin (7.8 PPG, 6.7 RPG) has a team-high 55 blocked shots and is second on the team in steals with 31.

-- Oklahoma is No. 21 in the RPI thanks to its remarkable 5-0 record against the Top 25. The Sooners are just 6-5 versus the Top 50, though, and they’re 10-8 when facing Top-100 competition. They have wins at Wichita St and at TCU, in addition to home victories over Texas Tech, TCU and Kansas. Kruger’s bunch has neutral-court wins over USC and Oregon.

-- The ‘under’ is 14-7 overall for Texas Tech, 7-4 in its home outings.

-- The ‘over’ is 15-8 overall for OU, 4-4 in their road games.

-- ESPN will have the broadcast at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

    **Virginia at Miami**

-- Virginia is the Associated Press’s No. 1 team for the first time since 1983, when three-time National Player of the Year Ralph Sampson was the team’s star. It was the first time ever (the AP was born in 1948) a basketball team had lost the previous week and still ascended to the top spot. This type of accomplishment has been the kiss of death for many teams through the years (Florida and Baylor immediately come to mind), at least as it pertains to its next game.

-- Virginia is certainly in danger of going down tonight, but the Westgate opened Tony Bennett’s team as a 5.5-point favorite. As of early this morning, one offshore book had the total at 119.

-- Virginia (23-2 SU, 16-5-1 ATS) is 12-1 in ACC play and leads Clemson by two games in the league standings.

-- UVA leads the country in scoring defense, holding opponents to 52.8 points per game. The Cavaliers are third in the nation in field-goal percentage defense (37.7) and fifth at defending the 3-point line (29.7%).

-- Virginia is No. 1 in the RPI with a 4-0 record against Top-10 foes, including victories over Rhode Island, North Carolina, Clemson and Duke. UVA is 8-1 against the RPI Top 50 and a 12-2 mark versus the Top 100. The Cavs have road wins at Duke, at Syracuse, at FSU, at Virginia Tech and at VCU.

-- UVA had its 16-game winning streak snapped Saturday in Charlottesville when Kerry Blackshear Jr. scored on a putback with 5.8 seconds left. The Hokies won 61-60 as 12.5-point underdogs to avenge a 75-52 home loss to the Cavs in Blacksburg in early January. Devon Hall had 16 points and six rebounds in the losing effort. De’Andre Hunter finished with 14 points and five boards, while Kyle Guy had 13 points, six rebounds and two assists without a turnover. Guy couldn’t buy a basket, though. He went 5-of-21 from the field and 3-of-14 from downtown.

-- Guy is averaging a team-best 15.3 PPG, while Devon Hall (12.5 PPG) is the only other double-figure scorer. Hall has hit 46.0 percent of his 3-point attempts and 90.6 percent of his free throws. Ty Jerome (9.9 PPG) has a 92/41 assist-to-turnover ratio and has buried 95.0 percent of his FTs.

-- Virginia is 7-1 both SU and ATS in eight road assignments.

-- Miami is No. 24 in the RPI, going 3-4 versus Top-50 opponents and 5-5 versus the Top 100. The Hurricanes have a neutral-court win over Middle Tennessee and have beaten FSU and Louisville in Coral Gables. They have road wins at N.C. State and at Virginia Tech.

-- Miami (18-6 SU, 9-10 ATS) had its three-game winning streak halted in Saturday’s 72-70 loss at Boston College as a two-point road favorite. The Hurricanes led 70-63 with six minutes remaining, but the Eagles finished the game on a 9-0 roll. The 142 combined points wiggled ‘under’ the 146-point total in a tough loss for ‘over’ supporters. UM’s Dejan Vasijevic scored 17 points thanks to 5-of-10 accuracy from 3-point territory. Chris Lykes had 16 points and Ja’Quan Newton finished with 11 in defeat.

-- Miami has won nine of its 10 home games, but it is merely 1-4 ATS. This is the second home underdog situation for Jim Larranaga’s squad. In the first, Duke went to south Florida and emerged with an 83-75 victory as a 4.5-point road favorite.

-- Huell (12.3 PPG, 6.8 RPG) leads a balanced scoring attack that features seven players averaging 8.4 PPG or better. However, one of those players, Bruce Brown, remains ‘out’ with a foot injury. Brown was averaging 11.4 points, 7.1 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.8 blocked shots per game. UM’s hope is that Brown can be back at some point in early-to-mid March. Lonnie Walker is also scoring in double figures with his 11.3 PPG average.

-- The ‘over’ is 10-9 overall for UM, 4-1 in its home games. The Hurricanes have watched the ‘over’ cash at an 8-2 clip in their past 12 outings.

-- The ‘under’ is on an 8-1 run for UVA to improve to 17-5-1 overall and 8-4 in its home games.

-- The ‘under’ is 6-2 in the past eight head-to-head meetings between these teams.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

    **B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- The SEC’s longest-tenured coach announced his resignation Monday, effective at the end of the season. Andy Kennedy was all class and integrity as he told the media he was “completely at peace” with his decision to step away after 12 seasons. Although he only took Ole Miss to two NCAA Tournaments, he is one of only five coaches in SEC history to win at least 20 games in nine of his first 11 seasons, joining the likes of Billy Donovan, Joe B. Hall, Nolan Richardson and Tubby Smith. Kennedy has never finished worse than 7-9 or in sixth place in the SEC, and he’s the all-time winningest coach in Rebels’ men’s basketball history. My favorite line from Kennedy came as Ole Miss was going to halftime against Wisconsin in a first-round NCAA Tournament game. When asked about Marshall Henderson’s first half shooting struggles (he had made like 1-of-14 FGAs in the first 20 minutes), Kennedy told the CBS sideline reporter, “We gone go with the horse that brung us; Marshall will be aaaight in the second half.” Indeed, Henderson heated up in the second half and the Rebels handed Bo Ryan one of the worst losses he ever took in an NCAA Tournament.

-- When Kennedy took the job, there wasn’t a new arena, Memphis wasn’t as down as it is no under Tubby and there was no SEC Network. In other words, it’s a much better gig these days. Recruiting in Memphis is key and Kennedy was the best there’s ever been at doing so for the Rebels. Although he’s 58 years old, Middle Tennessee’s Kermit Davis seems like the best fit. The thinking here is that Tom Crean will have better options and Rhode Island’s Danny Hurley is not the right fit. Whatever the case, Kennedy’s correct decision for both Ole Miss and himself to make a clean break and hit the reset button has come at a time that gives the school an early start on other programs that’ll also be hunting for a new coach.

-- Baylor picked up a huge win at Texas in double overtime last night. Jo Lual-Acuil tipped in the game-winning bucket off a miss by Manu Lecomte, who had driven deep into the paint to draw other defenders. Lecomte’s penetration paved a path to the offensive boards for Lual-Acuil, who finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds in the Bears’ 74-73 win. Scott Drew’s team now takes a four-game winning streak back to Waco, with consecutive home games vs. Texas Tech and West Virginia looming. Baylor beat the Longhorns for the sixth straight time as a three-point underdog. Gamblers backing the ‘under’ took a ruthless Bat Beat. The 147 combined points only went ‘over’ the 132 points because the game went to a second straight extra session. It was the same scenario for ‘under’ backers in Arkansas’ double-OT win at Georgia last month.

-- West Virginia shook off Saturday’s gut-wrenching home loss to Oklahoma State to capture an 82-66 win over TCU last night in Morgantown. The Mountaineers hooked up their backers as eight-point home favorites. Freshman Teddy Allen led the way with 16 points and six rebounds in 23 minutes of playing time from off the bench.

-- Georgetown has covered in four straight games going into tonight’s game at Butler on the CBS Sports Network at 6:30 p.m. Eastern. The Hoyas were 11-point underdogs at most books this morning. Patrick Ewing’s team is 7-1 ATS in eight road assignments. Meanwhile, Butler is 12-2 SU and 10-3 ATS at home.

-- Kansas will try to bounce back from Saturday’s 16-point loss at Baylor tonight when it faces Iowa State at 7:00 p.m. in Ames on ESPN2. The Jayhawks were favored by six early this a.m.

-- Richmond was listed as a 16-point underdog for tonight’s trip to Rhode Island. The Spiders might be without De’Monte Buckingham, who is listed as ‘questionable’ with cramp issues. Buckingham is averaging 12.4 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.3 APG.

    Xavier-'Nova set to battle Saturday
    February 13, 2018

Villanova and Xavier were among the four teams to earn No. 1 seeds in the NCAA's preliminary rankings before Selection Sunday.

One will get knocked off its perch this weekend.

One of the biggest games of the Big East season - maybe of the college basketball season - will played in Cincinnati on Saturday, when No. 3 Villanova faces No. 4 Xavier.

The Musketeers (23-3, 11-2) have been on a roll since losing consecutive games in early January, winning eight straight. Xavier moved up to No. 4 in the AP poll this week and was picked as the third overall seed and No. 1 in the Midwest Region by the NCAA Division I Basketball Committee in its initial rankings.

Villanova spent five weeks at No. 1 and appeared to be rolling toward the Big East regular-season title. That changed last week, when the Wildcats suffered a surprising loss to unranked St. John's.

Villanova (23-2, 10-2) fell to No. 3 in the AP Top 25, but was the No. 2 overall seed behind Virginia and slotted as the top seed in the East Region. The Wildcats bounced back with an 11-point victory over Butler after the St. John's loss.

''The loss made it obvious we had to get back to playing Villanova basketball,'' Villanova's Donte DiVincenzo said.

The loser of Saturday's game could end up losing their No. 1 slot, but there's still plenty of time before Selection Sunday on March 11.

Villanova plays Providence and Xavier hosts Seton Hall on Wednesday.

    DUEL IN THE DESERT

The rivalry between Arizona and Arizona State had been lopsided for roughly three decades before the Sun Devils became one of college basketball's biggest surprises this season.

Even with its rise in stature, Arizona State still didn't measure up to the Wildcats in the first meeting, becoming the last undefeated Division I team to lose.

That was in Tucson. For the rematch on Thursday, the Sun Devils play at home and have some momentum.

''This time, I'm sure they're very confident and they should be, but I thought the last time they were very confident,'' Arizona coach Sean Miller said. ''You can tell Bobby Hurley has done a really job of instilling that confidence in them, that belief in them.''

In the first meeting, Arizona took advantage of its size inside and withstood a late charge to win 84-78, ending the best start in Arizona State history.

The Sun Devils (19-6, 7-6 Pac-12) continued to have trouble with bigger teams before finding some answers the past two weeks. Arizona State has won three straight, including victories over Southern California and UCLA last week.

Arizona (20-6, 10-3) has lost two of its past four games, both to unranked teams, but still leads the Pac-12 by two games.

    RED RAIDERS AND SOONERS

Texas Tech (21-4, 9-3 Big 12) has steadily worked its way up the AP Top 25 and remained at No. 7 this week. Not surprisingly, it earned the Red Raiders a spot among the top 16 teams in the NCAA's preliminary rankings at third in the East Region.

Oklahoma also was among the top 16, which came as a surprise to some college basketball fans.

The Sooners were the talk of college basketball early in the season, racking up wins while dynamic freshman Trae Young put on a show every time he took the court. Oklahoma has since cooled off as teams have found a way to make life more difficult for Young, leading to three straight losses and six in eight games.

The Sooners (16-8, 5-6 Big 12) dropped to No. 23 in the AP poll, but were the committee's No. 4 seed in the Midwest based upon their early season victories.

The two teams meet Tuesday in Lubbock.

    LOADED DAY

Sunday has four games involving ranked teams and three of those are ranked vs. ranked.

The first two involve a rivalry game, No. 8 Ohio State at No. 22 Michigan, and an up-and-comer against a blue blood, No. 12 Duke at No. 11 Clemson.

Later in the afternoon, No. 19 Wichita State plays at No. 5 Cincinnati in a key AAC game. The Bearcats have yet to lose in conference (12-0) and hold a three-game lead.

Surprise! No. 10 Auburn chasing SEC title, high NCAA seed
    February 13, 2018

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) The Auburn Tigers are in an utterly unfamiliar position.

The 10th-ranked Tigers enter the final few weeks of the regular season chasing a Southeastern Conference title and a high NCAA Tournament seed. They're right about where Kentucky, which visits Auburn Arena Wednesday night, usually is this time of year.

''We're not used to it,'' Auburn forward Desean Murray said. ''We've been playing well. We've just got to keep our heads focused and we've just got to stay hungry and we've just got to keep coming to play.''

Auburn (22-3, 10-2 SEC) has a two-game lead over No. 18 Tennessee, which the Tigers beat , and Florida.

The Tigers, whose only SEC titles came in 1960 and 1999, visit the Gators on Feb. 24.

But the pivotal stretch run begins with Kentucky (17-8, 6-6), which has lost three straight games. The Wildcats have won 19 of the last 20 meetings with Auburn, but this isn't the typical Auburn team.

The NCAA Tournament selection committee seeded the Tigers No. 2 and fifth overall in a mock bracket on Sunday. Auburn is currently seventh in the NCAA's RPI.

Pretty good for a program that hasn't made the field since 2003. The Tigers' closing schedule includes road trips to South Carolina, Florida and Arkansas. Kentucky, Alabama and the Gamecocks visit Auburn.

''I don't think we'll have any problem in any way with overconfidence,'' Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said. ''That's not our problem.''

The Tigers have already overcome quite a bit to even get to this point.

The hurdles include the absence of two of their best players all season, center Austin Wiley and forward Danjel Purifoy, amid allegations that former associate head coach Chuck Person arranged payments to their families. Plus an injury to leading scorer Bryce Brown and an exhibition loss to Division II Barry.

Auburn won at Georgia 78-61 last Saturday with Brown out with a right shoulder injury. Brown practiced on Monday but his status against the Wildcats is uncertain. Murray, the team's top rebounder, missed almost all of the second half with cramps.

The Tigers dropped two spots in the poll after also losing 81-80 to No. 21 Texas A&M . But even that provided a silver lining for Pearl.

''Do you know what I think a great headline is? `Auburn drops to 10,''' he said. ''Is that not a great headline? I've been working so hard to maybe one day wake up in the morning and read the front page `Auburn drops to 10.' That's great.''

It's especially great for a team that was picked to finish ninth in the SEC. Kentucky was the preseason favorite.

''They were picked to finish before us in the league so we're still hungry as we've been before,'' said point guard Jared Harper , who is leading the league in assists. ''We're trying to go into every game and continue to work toward trying to win the SEC.''

Beyond that lies the NCAA Tournament, a destination Pearl has reached 17 times as a head coach and Auburn only eight.

Harper said hearing all the tournament talk from family or around campus isn't a distraction.

''That's always been a dream of mine just watching since I was a little kid and seeing all the games on TV,'' he said. ''Just being able to be a part of it would be great.''

    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Odds to win the Super Bowl next season:

    5-1— New England Patriots

    7-1— Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles

12-1— Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers

    16-1— New Orleans Saints

    18-1— Atlanta Falcons

20-1— Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Rams

    **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

    13) I came down to the casino floor Monday to go to the sports book here at the Westgate, and 3/4 of the casino floor is empty, including the carpet. They’re tearing up the old carpet and laying new carpet— they moved out all the slot machines and pushed the gaming tables over by the theater— it just looks weird. I’m guessing everything will be back in place by the weekend.

    12) Auburn is an 8.5-point favorite over Kentucky tonight; when these teams met LY, Kentucky was a 24-point favorite. Bruce Pearl has to get lot of votes for national Coach of the Year.

    11) Over the last six seasons, Kentucky has been a road underdog in ten SEC games; would you be surprised to know that they’re 1-8-1 against the spread in those games?

    10) Georgetown 87, Butler 83— 11-point underdog Hoyas are 5-9 in the Big East after playing the easiest pre-conference schedule in the country. When Patrick Ewing pulled his team out of the PK80 tournament in November, it was assumed that the talent there was so awful that they didn’t want to get clobbered early in Ewing’s first season as a head coach.

Georgetown’s kids play very hard and fact is, they’re better than most people thought they would be. Moving on, recruiting will be a huge question for Ewing, since he’s never done it before.

    9) Persistence is important in sports and in life. Golfer Ted Potter Jr won the Pebble Beach tournament Sunday and earned $1,506,517 for his second career win.

When Potter was first starting out as a pro golfer, he entered 24 events on the web.com Tour, and he missed the cut in all 24 tournaments. Can you imagine how awful that must have been, not to mention how expensive? But Potter stuck it out, and now he is a 2-time Tour winner.

    8) Pepperdine fired basketball coach Marty Wilson; in seven years in Malibu, the Waves are 42-76 in WCC games under Wilson, 1-13 this year. Pepperdine went 10-8 in league two and also three years ago, but then they fell off the cliff.

This means that in a league dominated by Gonzaga/St Mary’s, with BYU a steady third, LMU coach Mike Dunlap is the 4th-longest tenured coach in the WCC and he is 21-47 in WCC games. Five of the ten WCC teams have fired their coach in the last three years- Pacific’s coach retired.

    7) Looks like the Los Angeles Angels will use a 6-man pitching rotation, which is what teams in Japan do (teams generally have Monday off in Japan). Halos spent a ton of money when they signed Shohei Ohtani, and he is used to pitching once a week. This will be an interesting thing to follow— if it works for them, you know more teams will do it.

    6) Isaiah Thomas is in his 7th year in the NBA and he is already on his fifth team; what does that tell you? He is a career 19 ppg scorer. I’m guessing he may not be America’s best teammate.

    5) Arizona Cardinals gave GM Steve Keim a 4-year contract extension; now he has to get together with his new coach and figure out who the Cardinals’ QB will be going forward.

    4) Nebraska 70, Maryland 66— Cornhuskers have 20 wins for the first time since 1993.

    3) Rhode Island 85, Richmond 67— Rams won their 16th straight game, but EC Matthews hurt his left knee and was dragged off the court. URI seemed hopeful that the injury isn’t serious- they went 4-2 when Matthews broke his wrist earlier this season.

    2) What in God’s name is former major league pitcher Esteban Loaiza thinking? The guy made over $43M in his playing career and now he gets busted with 44 pounds of cocaine, which is worth $500,000? Hard to have any sympathy for the guy.

    1) If you want someone else to hold your money for the next 50 weeks, you can bet Super Bowl LIII today; AFC is a 1-point favorite, with a total of 52. Game is in Atlanta’s domed stadium.

    **Villanova at Providence**

-- When these teams met in Philadelphia on Jan. 23, Providence raced out to a 17-8 advantage in the game’s first 10 minutes. However, Villanova went on a 22-2 run to lead by nine at intermission. The Wildcats went on to collect an 89-69 victory to take the cash as enormous 15.5-point home favorites at Wells Fargo Center. Eric Paschall stuffed the box score with an impressive stat line, including 17 points, four steals, three blocked shots, two rebounds and five assists without a turnover. Omari Spellman added 16 points, six rebounds and a pair of rejections, while Jalen Brunson finished with 15 points and four assists compared to merely one turnover. PU’s Rodney Bullock had a team-best 16 points in the losing effort.

-- Villanova (23-2 straight up, 17-8 against the spread) has won five consecutive games in this rivalry, but the Friars are 5-2 ATS in the last seven encounters. The ‘over’ is 8-3 in the past 11 head-to-head meetings between these schools.

-- As of early this morning, most betting shops had Villanova installed as a nine-point favorite with a total of 153.5.

-- This time around, Paschall won’t be in uniform for Villanova. The junior forward is ‘out’ indefinitely with a concussion, while starting guard Phil Booth remains ‘out’ with a broken bone in his right shooting hand. Paschall is averaging 10.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.0 steals per game, while Booth is averaging 11.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.1 SPG.

-- Jay Wright’s team is ranked third in both the RPI Rankings and the latest Associated Press Top 25. Villanova has posted an 8-1 record against the RPI Top 50 and a 13-2 mark versus the Top 100. The Wildcats have neutral-court wins over Tennessee, Gonzaga and Western Kentucky, in addition to home wins over the likes of Xavier, Providence, Creighton, Seton Hall, Butler and Marquette. They have road scalps at Temple, at St. John’s, at UConn and at Marquette.

-- Villanova’s defeats have come at Butler (101-93 on 12/30/17) and at home vs. St. John’s (79-75 on 2/7/18). Wright’s team bounced back from the loss to the Johnnies with Saturday’s 86-75 win over Butler as a 9.5-point home ‘chalk.’ The Bulldogs led by three at halftime and never trailed by more than 11. Donte DiVincenzo exploded for 30 points and Brunson scored 27 to pace the winners. Spellman contributed 10 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks, while Mikal Bridges finished with 10- points, two steals, two rebounds, one block and five assists compared to only one turnover.

-- Brunson is building a strong case for National Player of the Year honors. The junior guard has drained 44.8 percent of his 3-pointers and is averaging team-highs in scoring (20.1 PPG), assists (4.7 APG) and field-goal percentage (54.5%). Spellman (10.9 PPG) leads the Wildcats in rebounding (7.7 RPG) and blocks (1.4 BPG), while Bridges is averaging 16.4 points. 5.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.1 SPG.

-- Providence (16-9 SU, 8-15 ATS) owns an 11-3 SU record and a 4-8 ATS mark at home this year. The Friars are 2-1 both SU and ATS in three games as home underdogs.

-- Ed Cooley’s team is mired in a 1-4 ATS slump. Of all the bubble teams scattered across the nation, none had a worse loss this past weekend that PU. The Friars got run out of their own gym in an 80-63 loss to DePaul as seven-point home favorites. The Blue Demons led by as many as 31 points in the second half. Providence had 16 turnovers compared to six assists and was an atrocious 2-of-19 from 3-point range (10.5%).

-- In Joe Lunardi’s latest edition of ‘Bracketology’ at ESPN.com, Providence was a part of the Last Four Byes. That means PU would be a 10-seed and just barely avoid playing in the First Four in Dayton.

-- Providence is No. 42 in the RPI with its 4-5 record against the Top 50 and a 9-6 mark versus the Top 100. The Friars have home wins over Xavier, Butler, Creighton, Belmont, Boston College and Rider, in addition to a neutral-court victory vs. Washington. They have road wins at St. John’s and at Marquette.

-- Bullock is averaging a team-high 14.6 points and 5.8 RPG, while Alpha Diallo is averaging 12.2 points and 6.4 RPG. Kyron Cartwright (10.9 PPG), the senior point guard, has a 144/65 assist-to-turnover ratio and is burying 40.6 percent of his treys. Jalen Lindsey (10.1 PPG) is making 45.9 percent of his 3-pointers.

-- The ‘over’ has hit in six straight games for ‘Nova to improve to 17-8 overall and 4-4 in their road assignments.

-- Despite a 6-3 run for the ‘under,’ Providence has seen the ‘over’ go 13-10 overall and 8-4 in its home outings.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

    **Kentucky at Auburn**

-- Auburn (22-3 SU, 17-6 ATS) is atop the SEC standings with a 10-2 record in league play. The Tigers are 1.5 games in front of second-place Tennessee, which held off South Carolina last night to improve to 9-4 in conference action.

-- Auburn bounced back from last Wednesday’s 81-80 loss to Texas A&M as a 6.5-point favorite to smash Georgia on Saturday by a 78-61 count as a three-point road ‘chalk.’ Jared Harper was the catalyst with 24 points, seven assists and two steals. He drained 4-of-7 launches from 3-point range. Musapha Heron added 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field.

-- As of early this morning, most spots had Auburn listed as an 8.5-point favorite with a total of 158.

-- Bruce Pearl’s team is 12-1 SU and 8-3 ATS at home this year.

-- After leaving the Texas A&M game with a shoulder injury that kept him out of Saturday’s win at UGA, Auburn leading scorer Bryce Brown (16.6 PPG) has been upgraded to ‘probable’ tonight vs. UK.

-- Auburn is 10th in the latest AP Top 25 and sixth in the RPI. The Tigers are 4-3 against the Top 50 and 10-3 against the Top 100. They own road wins at Tennessee, at Missouri, at Mississippi St., at Georgia and at Murray State, in addition to a neutral-court victory over Middle Tennessee. AU has home wins over Arkansas, UConn, UGA and LSU.

-- Heron is averaging 16.3 points and 5.4 RPG, while Harper (13.3 PPG) has a 149/47 assist-to-turnover ratio and is hitting 41.3 percent of his 3-pointers.

-- Kentucky (17-8 SU, 10-15 ATS) is 18th in the RPI, which is a factoid that’s perplexed me for weeks! UK is 1-5 against the Top 25, 4-6 versus the Top 50 and 9-8 against the Top 100. John Calipari’s club really has just one win of note outside of Rupp Arena, rallying from a 17-point first-half deficit to win 83-76 at West Virginia. The next-best win for Cal’s bunch is a 74-71 triumph at LSU (#77 RPI before losing at ‘Bama last night). UK has home scalps of Texas A&M, Louisville, Vermont, East Tennessee State, Virginia Tech, UGA and Mississippi State.

-- Kentucky is 3-4 both SU and ATS in seven true road assignments. UK is 1-3 both SU and ATS in four games as a road underdog. This 8.5-point ‘dog spot at AU is the riches of the year for the ‘Cats.

-- Kentucky is hoping to avoid a four-game losing streak tonight at Auburn. The Wildcats could’ve easily lost four in a row already, but they rallied (better put, Vandy had an unfathomable meltdown!) to force overtime and beat Vanderbilt two weeks ago. Since then, they have lost at Missouri (69-60), vs. Tennessee (61-59) and at Texas A&M (85-74).

-- In Saturday night’s loss at A&M, UK failed to cover the spread as a six-point underdog. The ‘Cats led by four at halftime, but the Aggies outscored them 59-44 in the final 20 minutes. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 19 points, handed out eight assists, blocked two shots and had a pair of steals. Kevin Knox finished with 18 points, five rebounds and four assists compared to merely one turnover.

-- Knox is averaging team-highs in scoring (15.0 PPG) and rebounding (5.6 RPG). Gilgeous-Alexander (13.1 PPG) paces UK in assists (4.6 APG), FG percentage (49.0%) and steals (1.7 SPG).

-- The ‘over’ is 12-11 overall for AU, 7-4 in its home contests.

-- The ‘over’ is 13-11 overall for the ‘Cats, but they’ve seen the ‘under’ go 4-3 in their road contests.

-- ESPN will have the broadcast at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

    **B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- I went 2-1 last night with a gross Bad Beat on ‘under’ 124 in Rutgers’ 67-58 overtime win (125 combined points) over Northwestern as a 3.5-point home underdog. My winners were my guarantee on Nebraska in its 70-66 win over Maryland and Georgetown as a double-digit underdog in its 87-83 victory at Butler.

-- Tim Miles picked up quite the score with Miami transfer James Palmer Jr., who was sensational in last night’s win over the Terrapins. Palmer scored 26 points, grabbed four rebounds, handed out five assists and committed only one turnover. This Nebraska ATS run is downright nasty! The Cornhuskers are 16-1 ATS in their past 17 games. They’ll take a six-game winning streak into Sunday’s game at Illinois.

-- Patrick Ewing’s team improve to 8-1 ATS on the road. Georgetown cashed monster money-line tickets in the +600 range. Marcus Derrickson paced the Hoyas will 27 points and seven rebounds. The junior power forward made 11-of-13 FGAs, while Jessie Govan produced 17 points, 12 boards, four assists and three blocked shots.

-- Missouri ended Texas A&Ms four-game winning streak both SU and ATS by winning a 62-58 decision as a 2.5-point home favorite last night. The Tigers extended their own winning streak to five behind 16 points from Kassius Robertson, the grad transfer from Canisius who is averaging 16.6 PPG.

-- First place in the Mountain West Conference will be line the line tonight at Taco Bell Arena, where Boise State will host Nevada. As of early this morning, most books had the Broncos favored by two points. They’re unbeaten in 13 home games with a 7-5 spread record. BSU will be looking to avenge a 74-68 loss in Reno as a six-point underdog on Jan. 20. The ‘under’ is 8-2 in the last 10 head-to-head meetings between these MWC rivals. Tip-off is scheduled for 11:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPNU.

-- Florida will be looking to get even with Georgia tonight in Gainesville. UGA took it to UF in a 72-60 win as a 3.5-point home underdog on Jan. 30. Yante Maten led the Bulldogs with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Turtle Jackson finished with 16 points in a turnover-free performance. The ‘under’ is on an 11-2 run for the Dawgs, who have lost eight of their past 10 games to put Mark Fox’s job in serious jeopardy. Five of the eight Georgia L’s have come by double-digit margins. As of early this morning, Florida was favored by 10. If that line holds, it will be the first time UGA has been a double-digit underdog this year. The SEC Network will provide television coverage at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

-- St. John’s will take its three-game winning streak both SU and ATS into Chicago tonight to face DePaul. The Blue Demons are 5-8 both SU and ATS in 13 home games. Chris Mullin’s squad was a 2.5-point road favorite early this morning. The Red Storm has consecutive victories vs. Duke as a 10.5-point home underdog, at Villanova as a 16.5-point ‘dog and vs. Marquette as a two-point home ‘chalk.’ The ‘over’ has hit in three straight for St. John’s, too. The CBS Sports Network will have the broadcast at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

-- Indiana is back in action tonight vs. Illinois at 8:30 p.m. Eastern on the Big Ten Network. The Hoosiers, who were 8.5-point home favorites this morning, are 11-3 ATS in their 14 games dating back to Dec. 21. The ‘under’ is on a remarkable 12-1-1 run in IU’s last 14 outings. The Illini is winless in eight road games with a 3-4-1 ATS ledger.

-- Mississippi State was a one-point underdog this morning for tonight’s game against Vandy at Memorial Gymnasium in Music City. The Bulldogs have ripped off five straight spread covers, but they’re only 1-6 SU and 2-5 ATS on the road. Ben Howland’s team is 18-7 overall and is a part of Lunardi’s Next Four Out. MSU lost a controversial game in overtime at Missouri this past Saturday when a flop drew a nonsense charging call on Lamar Peters, who proceeded to knock down what would’ve been a go-ahead 3-pointer with about six ticks left. Bryce Drew’s club is 5-2 ATS in its past seven games. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on the SEC Network.
