NCAAB Game of the Day: Duke vs. Michigan State betting preview and odds
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mike Krzyzewski has owned Tom Izzo, going 10-1 SU in 11 career head-to-head meetings. However, Michigan State has been the slightly better bet, going 6-5 ATS.

No. 1 Duke Blue Devils vs. No. 2 Michigan State Spartans (+2, 157)

Game to be played at UNited Center, Chicago, Illinois

College basketball gets an early-season treat when No. 1 Duke takes on No. 2 Michigan State on Tuesday night in the opener of the Champions Classic at the United Center in Chicago. The Blue Devils scored 97 and 99 points in home victories over Elon and Utah Valley to start the season, while the Spartans had 98 points in their season-opening victory over North Florida.

Veteran guard Grayson Allen is the leader for Mike Krzyzewski's Duke squad, providing solid shooting (averaging 20 points per game) and leadership as the team's only senior. But the big news about the Blue Devils is the play of a tremendous freshman class that features four starters -- Marvin Bagley III (24.5 points, 10 rebounds), Gary Trent Jr. (17 points), Trevon Duval (11.5 points, 10 assists) and Wendell Carter Jr. (10 points, 6.5 rebounds). Of course, Michigan State's four-man freshmen class of a year ago is now an experienced sophomore bunch, led by Player of the Year favorite Miles Bridges (20 points, 10 rebounds in season opener), a versatile forward who is a force on both ends of the floor. He's joined by fellow sophomores Nick Ward (16 points), Cassius Winston (12 points, eight assists) and Joshua Langford (13 points) in the starting lineup along with the team's own highly touted freshman, Jaren Jackson Jr., who debuted with 13 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks.

    TV:
    7 p.m. ET. ESPN

    LINE HISTORY:
The No. 1 ranked Blue Devils opened as slight 2-point favorites on the neutral court of the United Center. Duke was bet up to -2.5, but have since returned to the opening number. The total opened at 157.5 and is down slightly to 157.

    ABOUT DUKE (2-0, 1-0 ATS, 1-0 O/U):
The Blue Devils are extremely talented but depth may be a problem for Krzyzewski's squad this season. In their first two contests -- wins by an average of 29.5 points -- the five starters played 289 of a possible 400 minutes and scored 166 of the team's 196 points. Against a team such as Michigan State, that has plenty of size inside and a lot of bodies that coach Tom Izzo likes to rotate into the game, the Blue Devils' starters will be tested on their ability to stay out of foul trouble and be fresh in the closing minutes of the contest.

    ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (1-0, 1-0 ATS, 1-0 O/U):
Although the Spartans romped in their season opener, Izzo was not happy about the team's 3-of-12 shooting from 3-point range. Winston was 2-for-2 but shooting guards Langford and Matt McQuaid combined to go 1-of-6 from beyond the arc while Bridges was 0-for-2. Part of it may have been opening-night jitters or excitement, but the Spartans are going to need to be able to spread defenses to allow Jackson and Ward space to play down low and help Bridges find some driving lanes to the basket.

    TIP-IN BETTING TIDBITS:

    1. Krzyzewski is 10-1 SUagainst Izzo, however, Michigan State is 6-5 ATS in those contests.

    2. Jackson became the fourth Spartan freshman to post a double-double in his debut and his 13 rebounds were the second-most by a Spartan freshman in his first game.

    3. Duval's 20 assists in the first two games of a career easily topped Chris Duhon's previous school record of 12 at the start of the 2000-01 season.

Trump hopes swift return of UCLA players
    November 14, 2017

LOS ANGELES (AP) Three UCLA basketball players detained in China on suspicion of shoplifting returned home, where they may be disciplined by the school as a result of the international scandal.

Freshmen LiAngelo Ball, Jalen Hill and Cody Riley arrived at Los Angeles International Airport late Tuesday afternoon after a 12-hour flight from Shanghai. They ignored reporters' shouted questions while making their way through a horde of media outside and getting into a van that took off from the departure level.

Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said the matter ''has been resolved to the satisfaction of the Chinese authorities.''

The players were detained in Hangzhou for questioning following allegations of shoplifting last week before the 23rd-ranked Bruins beat Georgia Tech in their season-opening game in Shanghai as part of the Pac-12 China game. The rest of the UCLA team returned home last Saturday.

A person with knowledge of the Pac-12's decision said any discipline involving the trio would be up to UCLA. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the conference doesn't plan any sanctions.

UCLA Chancellor Gene Block said the school is weighing its options.

''I want to be clear that we take seriously any violations of the law,'' he said in a statement. ''In this particular case, both Athletics and the Office of Student Conduct will review this incident and guide any action with respect to the involved students. Such proceedings are confidential, which limits the specific information that can be shared.''

There was no immediate word on the trio's status for the team's home opener Wednesday night against Central Arkansas.

The school said the three players, along with coach Steve Alford and athletic director Dan Guerrero, will make their first public comments about the matter at a campus news conference Wednesday, but won't take questions.

Scott thanked President Donald Trump, the White House and the State Department for their efforts in resolving what he called ''the incident with authorities in Hangzhou, China.'' He indicated that UCLA made ''significant efforts'' on behalf of its athletes.

It wasn't clear under what terms the players were freed to return to the U.S.

''We are all very pleased that these young men have been allowed to return home to their families and university,'' Scott said.

Trump said Tuesday he had a long conversation about the three players' status with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

Ball, Hill and Riley were expected to have an immediate impact as part of UCLA's highly touted recruiting class. Instead, they are being talked about solely for their actions off the court.

Ball, a guard whose brother Lonzo is a rookie for the Los Angeles Lakers, averaged 33.8 points as a high school senior. The elder Ball played one season in Westwood and left early for the NBA draft.

The Balls' outspoken father, LaVar, was in China at the time of the incident. He spent some time promoting the family's Big Baller Brand of athletic shoes with his youngest son, LaMelo, while his middle son was detained.

Forwards Hill and Riley, both four-star recruits, figure to bolster 7-foot senior Thomas Welsh in the frontcourt.

The Bruins traveled to China as part of the Pac-12's global initiative that seeks to popularize the league's athletic programs and universities overseas. The China Game is in its third year, and while the scandal was developing the league announced that California and Yale will play in next year's edition.

The game is sponsored by Alibaba Group, the Chinese commerce giant that both UCLA and Georgia Tech visited before the shoplifting incident occurred.

Auburn set to make road trip without pair
    November 14, 2017

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) The Auburn basketball team is set to make its first road trip without two top players and a pair of support staffers.

Coach Bruce Pearl said Tuesday center Austin Wiley and forward Danjel Purifoy aren't scheduled to travel to the Charleston Classic Wednesday morning. He says their status ''could change in a moment's notice.''

Auburn has been conducting an internal investigation into the basketball program since the arrest of former associate head coach Chuck Person on federal bribery and fraud charges.

Auburn placed support staffers Jordan VerHulst and Frankie Sullivan on leave Monday based on that internal review. The school is holding out Wiley and Purifoy.

Pearl says he communicates daily with Auburn's administration. Asked about his own job status, he said: ''I'm the basketball coach at Auburn and we're in the middle of an ongoing investigation.''

    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

    — Duke 88, Michigan State 81— Blue Devils started four freshmen in this game.

    — Kansas 65, Kentucky 61— Are young Wildcats better than people think?

    — Wake Forest is already 0-2, losing to Georgia Southern and Liberty. Pitt lost its first two games, to Navy/Montana- they’re going to drag the ACC’s rating down a little bit.

    — Eastern Washington 67, Stanford 61— Big Sky’s Eagles were a 16-point dog.

    — Celtics 109, Nets 102— Boston won its last 13 game after an 0-2 start.

    — Lemon pound cake at Starbucks is………tremendous!!!!

    Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

    13) Carolina Panthers are on their bye week; injured TE Greg Olsen is going to Minnesota on Sunday to work the Rams-Vikings game on FOX TV. The Vikings aren’t happy about it.

Carolina plays Minnesota in three weeks; Olsen is likely to be playing by then. FOX has said Olsen won’t be in production meetings or meet with the coaches during the week, but he will be in the booth with Kevin Burkhardt-Charles Davis Sunday.

I’m not sure what to think of this; I’d have a bigger problem about a production meeting with Jon Gruden if my team had a Monday night game with Washington, seeing how his brother coaches the Redskins, but no one seems to have an issue with that.

    12) The three nitwits from UCLA’s basketball team who got caught stealing from stores in China were sent home Tuesday. Next step is up to UCLA’s administration; how long do these geniuses get suspended for? They embarrassed their families, the school, our country; they’re lucky they aren’t stuck in a Chinese jail for a year to two- it could’ve happened.

    11) Duke-Michigan State game Tuesday; five freshman starters, four sophomore starters. Part of why November games are a handicapping minefield- so many players/teams you just don’t know a lot about.

    10) Duke’s freshman Marvin Bagley got poked in his eye by a teammate in the first half Tuesday and sat out the rest of the game. I’m thinking the next time we see Bagley play, he’ll be wearing goggles.

    9) Kid named Geno Crandall from North Dakota scored 41 points in a game vs Troy over the weekend; he only had four points at halftime— he scored 37 in the second half!!!

    8) Bad news for Central Florida’s hoop team; BJ Taylor is out 4-6 weeks with a stress fracture in his foot. He is UCF’s best player.

    7) Common sense scored a rare win Tuesday when NC State’s Braxton Beverly was declared eligible by the NCAA. Beverly was taking summer classes at Ohio State when Thad Matta was fired by the Buckeyes- young Beverly then bolted to NC State.

    6) So much money goes into scouting in pro sports; then you remember that Jimmer Fredette was taken one spot before Klay Thompson and you realize it is still an inexact science, and always will be.

    5) New Mexico is favored over UNLV in football Saturday, the first time they’ve been favored over the Rebels since 2008. Hard to believe UNLV’s football team has been favored over anyone six times in a row.

    4) Washington Nationals hired Chip Hale as their bench coach, bad news for my A’s, who now have to find a new third base coach. I’m not sure why the Nationals didn’t just hire Hale as their manager; they hired Dave Martinez, who has never managed in the big leagues.

    3) Milwaukee 74, Iowa State 56— Stunning score from earlier this week; Cyclones are in a total rebuild, but losing by 18 at home to Milwaukee? Oy.

    2) How did Joe Girardi get fired as manager in New York, wth no replacement immediately hired? They still haven’t hired anyone— managing a team in New York isn’t an entry-level job.

    1) If you think Roger Goodell is overpaid as NFL commish, here are four CEO’s who are also breaking the bank— why do these people make so much money?
    a) Thomas Rutledge. Charter Communications $98M in 2016
    b) Les Moonves, CBS $68.6M
    c) David O’Connor, Madison Square Garden $54M
    d) Fabrizio Freda, Estee Lauder $47.7M
