Not a lot to go on for the first 7-10 days, until these teams get some games under their belts. I’ll give you what relevant information I have:

Pistons won six of last seven games with Philly (6-1 vs spread); 76ers lost four of last five visits to the Motor City (1-4 vs spread, under 3-0 in last three). Philly is 0-3 to start season, losing by 5-10-34 points (1-2 vs spread, over 2-1). Detroit is 2-1 to start season, 3-0 vs spread- over is 2-1 in their games. Pistons beat Charlotte by 12 in their only home game.

Miami won five of its last seven games with Atlanta (7-0 vs spread); under is 8-2 in last 10 series games. Hawks are 1-3-1 vs spread in last five visits to Miami. Atlanta lost two of its first three games, all on road (under 2-1). Heat split its first two games (0-2 vs spread, over 2-0); they beat Indiana by 4 in their only home game.

Rockets won four of last six games with Memphis (over 4-2). Grizzlies are 3-2 vs spread in last six visits to Houston. Memphis opened with home wins over Pelicans/Warriors (under 2-0); this is their road opener. Rockets won their first three games (2-1 vs spread, under 2-1); they beat Dallas by 16 in their home opener.

Hornets/Bucks split their last eight meetings; Milwaukee was 5-3 vs spread in those games. Over is 3-1 in last four series games. Charlotte covered four of last five games in this building. Bucks won two of first three games (over 3-0), splitting pair of home games- they lost to the Cavaliers. Charlotte split its first two games (under 2-0), losing only road game by 12 in Detroit.

Warriors won their last six games with Dallas; they’re 7-3 vs spread in last ten series games. Over is 4-2 in last six series games. Golden State covered three of last four visits to Dallas; they’re 1-2 to start season (0-3 vs spread, over 2-1), with only win at New Orleans by 8, Mavericks are 0-3 to start season, losing by 6-5-16 points (under 2-1)- they’re 0-2 at home.

Spurs are 8-2 in last ten games with Toronto, but 3-3 vs spread in last six; over is 6-2 in last eight series games. Raptors are 1-4 vs spread in last five visits to the Alamo. Toronto won/covered their first two games (over 2-0) but this is their road opener. Spurs won their first two games by 8-10 points (over 1-1)— they beat Minnesota by 8 in their home opener.

Wizards won four of last six games with Denver; over is 4-1 in last five. Washington is 2-3 vs spread in its last five games in this building- they won their first two games by 5-4 points, both at home (0-2 vs spread, over 2-0). Nuggets split their first two games (under 2-0), beating Kings by 17 in their home opener.

Suns fired their coach after three games; they lost six of last seven games vs Sacramento-under is 5-1 in last six series games. Kings are 8-2 vs spread in last 10 series games, 4-1 in last five visits here. Sacramento lost two of three games to open season (under 3-0); they split pair of road games. Phoenix is 0-3 with two 40-point losses (under 2-1); they’re a mess.

    Inside the Paint - Monday
    October 23, 2017

Monday’s NBA slate has eight games on tap and seven of the matchups will likely have the home squad close as a favorite. No overnight line was posted on the Golden State-Dallas matchup due to the possible suspension of Warriors point guard Stephen Curry. With or without the All-Star, the Mavericks will be healthy home underdogs for this game. Also, the Atlanta-Miami game didn’t open due to key injuries for both clubs.

    Opening Week Notes

-- The Phoenix Suns fired head coach Earl Watson on Sunday after the team started 0-3 both straight up and against the spread behind a defense that has allowed 128.7 points per game. Oddsmakers at BookMaker.eu offered up a “First Coach Fired” prop and they didn’t even have Watson listed as a contender, which put him in the Field Odds at 4/1.

-- The firing led to Suns point guard Eric Bledsoe posting a Tweet – “I Don’t wanna be here.” Bledsoe only has one year left on his deal and he’s cheap by NBA standards but the loss of Brandon Knight to injury this summer might make it tough to deal him.

Along with the Suns, the 76ers, Mavericks sit at 0-3 while the Bulls and Knicks are also winless at 0-2. If you read my NBA pieces on VegasInsider.com, you’ll probably read the phrase “Make or Miss” league. It’s early but the Suns (39.7%) are the worst shooting team in the league while the Bulls (39.8%), Mavs (40.8%) and 76ers (41%) are next in line.

-- New York hasn’t been as bad but if continues to blow 21-point leads like it did last Saturday at home to Detroit, then head coach Jeff Hornacek might be joining Watson for an early vacation.

-- Ten teams are attempting more than 30 field goals a game from 3-point land and there are another three just below at 29. Last season, only six averaged more than 30 and just two teams did so in the 2015-16.

-- If those numbers don’t turn your head then check out this one on New Orleans forward DeMarcus Cousins. The All-Star ‘big man’ is leading the Pelicans with 7.7 three-pointers taken per game.

-- If you’ve been backing the both Cleveland (1-2 ATS) and Golden State (0-3 ATS) early this season, please accept my apologies. Since the public is attracted to these clubs, the numbers are always going to be inflated.

-- The Las Vegas Westgate SuperBook had Giannis Antetokounmpo listed at 7/1 odds to win the NBA regular season MVP before the season tipped off. I would expect an adjustment after watching him post 38.3 PPG, 9.7 rebounds and five assists.

As far as rookies go, Lonzo Ball (8.7 APG) and Ben Simmons (6 APG) can certainly dish the ball, but neither shoot from the outside with confidence. The kid Dillon Brooks on Memphis has looked sharp and De’Aaron Fox on Sacramento reminds me of John Wall, just a couple notches slower but so is everybody else.

Game of the Night – Toronto at San Antonio (NBATV, 8:35 p.m. ET)

We’re almost one week into the regular season and only six of the 30 teams in the league remain undefeated, which includes the two clubs squaring off in this matchup.

The Spurs opened as 2 ˝-point home favorites and I still think the rating on them is a tad low, even with All-Star Kawhi Leonard (quad) and point guard Tony Parker (quad) still sidelined.

San Antonio has opened 2-0 (1-0-1 ATS) and its winning with defense, ranked first in scoring with 88 PPG. LaMarcus Aldridge just inked a new extension and he’s already notched a pair of double-doubles in those wins.

This will be the first road test of the season for Toronto (2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS) who opened with a pair of wire-to-wire victories at home albeit against the Bulls and 76ers. The ‘over’ connected in both those games and Toronto is currently ranked second in scoring (122.5 PPG).

After this game, the Raptors head to Golden State on Wednesday before meeting the Lakers at the Staples Center on Friday. The six-game road trip, the longest of the season, will finish after stops in Portland, Denver and Utah. Fortunately for Toronto, it plays in the Atlantic Division.

San Antonio swept Toronto last season and that’s been a common theme in this series. Including those wins, the Spurs have won 11 of the previous 13 matchups against the Raptors. Make a note that Toronto has not won at San Antonio since 2007 and is 0-8 SU and 2-5-1 ATS in its last eight trips to the AT&T Center.

    Head-to-Head Trends & Notes

-- The Pistons have gone 6-1 both SU and ATS against the 76ers the last two seasons and every outcome during this span was decided by double digits. Detroit has started the season 3-0 versus the number.

-- The Heat have covered seven straight games (5-2 SU) against the Hawks. Miami won without Hassan Whiteside (knee) on Saturday and he’s ‘doubtful’ for this game. Atlanta point guard Dennis Schroder (ankle) is ‘doubtful’ as well.

-- Houston has won and covered four of the last six meetings against the Grizzlies, which includes a 2-1 mark at the Toyota Center. This will be the first road game for Memphis.

-- The Warriors have won six straight and 13 of the last 14 against the Mavericks. The club has gone 10-4 ATS during this run. Dallas rookie Dennis Smith Jr. (knee) sat out the last two games and could skip this contest as well.

-- Washington swept the season series last season and in the 2014-15 campaign but Denver captured both wins in 2016. Will the Nuggets keep the trend rolling and win Monday? I thought this line would be closer to pick ‘em knowing John Wall and Bradley Beal should play well against the youngsters in Denver’s backcourt. However, Washington wasn’t great on the road last season (19-21) and it will be difficult to run with the Nuggets, who are much deeper.

-- The Kings won and covered three of four against the Suns last season and are an eye opening 8-2 both SU and ATS in the last 10 games in this series. Sacramento should do better offensively against the Phoenix defense but with all the aforementioned factors going on, I’d tread lightly on this game.

    Total Notes

-- The Hawks and Heat are 8-2 to the ‘under’ in the last 10 meetings.

-- Philadelphia has allowed 120 and 128 in two road games, both ‘over’ winners. Early movement pushed tonight’s number at Detroit from 213 to 214.

-- Memphis and Houston have seen the ‘over’ go 4-2 in their last six encounters.

-- Washington and Denver are looking at the highest total posted on Tuesday with an opener of 223. The Wizards have gone ‘over’ in their first two games while the Nuggets are 2-0 to the ‘under.’ Denver has played a pair of teams (Utah, Sacramento) that don’t exactly play fast and neither are juggernauts.

-- The Kings and Suns had three totals listed between 218 and 219 last season and Monday’s opener of 211 has been steamed down to 209 ˝ at a few books this morning.

Suns fire Earl Watson after 3 games
    October 22, 2017

PHOENIX (AP) The Phoenix Suns have fired coach Earl Watson just three games in to the NBA season.

The Suns announced the firing Sunday night after hours of meetings at the team's headquarters.

Assistant coach Jay Triano, a former head coach of the Toronto Raptors, was named interim coach.

Watson was promoted from assistant to interim coach of the Suns after Jeff Hornacek was fired Feb. 1, 2016. The interim tag was removed on April 19 of that year. With an extremely young team, the Suns struggled under Watson. He compiled a 33-85 record. Watson's only full season was 2016-17, when the team went 24-58.

The 38-year-old Watson played collegiately at UCLA and in the NBA for 10 seasons. He often spoke of his long talks with John Wooden, emphasized togetherness and a family atmosphere to nurture the young squad but wins were hard to come by.

And owner Robert Sarver apparently didn't like what he saw. Phoenix is 0-3 and two of the losses were especially ugly. The Suns were blown out 124-76 by the Portland in their season opener Wednesday night, the most one-sided loss in franchise history and the most one-sided season opener for any NBA team.

Phoenix was routed by the Clippers in Los Angeles 130-88 on Saturday night.

''I Dont wanna be here,'' point guard Eric Bledsoe tweeted Sunday, just as the news of Watson's firing surfaced in an ESPN report. The tweet by Bledsoe, a former Clipper, was followed by one from the Clippers' DeAndre Jordan saying ''Come back home bro.''

Bledsoe has been rumored in possible trades for months.

Watson's dismissal is the first NBA coaching change in well over a year. Hornacek's hiring by the New York Knicks, which was finalized in June 2016, had been the most recent change - and the irony there is that Watson got the job in Phoenix with 33 games left in the 2015-16 season, after the Suns fired Hornacek.

Watson was the league's second-youngest active coach behind the Lakers' Luke Walton, and the Suns were tied with the Chicago Bulls as having the youngest opening-night roster in the NBA this season.

''I'd like to see the fight be a little bit more,'' Watson said after the blowout loss to the Clippers. ''Or a lot more, until you know they're just fatigued.''

The Suns came into this season with only four losses by 40 or more points in franchise history. They've had two in the first three games of this season. Phoenix has not made the playoffs in seven years, the longest drought in the franchise's 49-year history.

The 59-year-old Triano, the only Canadian-born head coach in NBA history, was 87-142 with Toronto from 2008-2011. He was an assistant at Portland before coming to Phoenix last year.

Watson was the 17th Suns coach in the franchise's history.

This was the first NBA season where every coach who started one year had the same job to begin the next.

NBA betting roadmap: Fading the Heat the right side if Whiteside is out
    Al McMordie

Hassan Whiteside is dealing with abone bruise in his left knee and if he misses any time, fading the Heat may not be a bad idea.

Last year we predicted the Golden State Warriors would win the title (at -130 odds) and go 16-0 in the playoffs. Unfortunately, the Warriors won their first 15 postseason games, but lost Game 3 off the Finals. The Dubs (-195) are our pick to win the NBA title again this year but we’ve got a bunch of money to make before then. Let's take a look at the upcoming week's action.

    Spread Watch

Golden State hasn’t burst out of the gate to start the new campaign, and, while the club did down the Pelicans at New Orleans, the lone win was sandwiched between two upset losses -- at home against Houston and on the road against Memphis.

Even worse for G-State bettors: Steve Kerr's crew is 0-3 against the spread. There's no doubt that the Warriors are by far the best team in the league, but since their 24-0 start to the 2015-16 season, they've been fairly pedestrian in Vegas, with a 95-86-3 ATS record, including 36-39-3 as road favorites.

This week, the Warriors will travel to Dallas on Monday, before coming back home for dates with Toronto, Washington and Detroit. The game in Dallas looks to be another trouble spot for the Warriors, as defending NBA champs have struggled early in the season as road favorites.

Since 1990, defending champs are just 11-21 ATS within the season's first four games. I look for another ATS loss for the Dubs.

    Total Watch

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Many thought the San Antonio Spurs would have a significant drop-off this season what with Tony Parker out for the first few months of this season and Kawhi Leonard’s lingering quad issues.

LaMarcus Aldridge and Pau Gasol struggled in the postseason and the Spurs lost key contributors Jonathon Simmons and Dewayne Dedmon left in free agency. But, lo and behold, the Spurs are 2-0 and have the league's best defense (they ranked No. 1 in defensive efficiency the last two seasons).

This week, the Spurs will welcome the Raptors to the AT&T Center before hitting the road to face the Heat, Magic and Pacers. The under is 5-0 in the last five matchups between the Magic and Spurs and we see no reason why the streak would end this season. The two games last season went under by 16 and 21 points respectively.

    Injury Watch

There have been several high-profile injuries to star players. Gordon Hayward, Chris Paul, Kawhi Leonard and Isaiah Thomas are all currently on the shelf for varying lengths of time. But the Celtics, Rockets, Spurs and Cavs have enough talent to soldier on.

The Miami Heat don’t have the same type of star power on their roster and the injury Hassan Whiteside could be a big short-term blow. Whiteside is out with a bone bruise on his left knee, and is listed as day-to-day.

The Heat center averaged 17 points and 14.1 rebounds in 32.6 minutes per game, and was invaluable for his side. He scored 26 and pulled down 26 boards in Miami's season opener vs. Orlando. Even worse for Miami: Dion Waiters is playing with an injured ankle.

The Heat went 2-3 in the five games Whiteside missed last season and those three losses were against some of the league's worst teams (Suns, Lakers and Pistons).

This week, Miami will host Atlanta, San Antonio and Boston. If there is a silver lining, it's that the Hawks, Spurs and Celtics are also dealing with the absence of key players.

The Hawks lost Dennis Schroder to an ankle injury on Sunday, while the Spurs and Celtics have had much more time to adjust to their player rotations.

Miami's game on Wednesday versus San Antonio is the one we should target to play against the Heat, should Whiteside be in street clothes. San Antonio has a lot of size inside, with LaMarcus Aldridge, Pau Gasol, and Joffrey Lauvergne. And the Spurs have also won nine straight in the series (8-1 ATS).

    Schedule Watch

There are six undefeated teams in the NBA, and none more surprising than the Memphis Grizzlies, who are projected to finish with 38 wins, and miss the playoffs. The Grizzlies opened the season with a 12-point win against New Orleans, and followed that up with a double-digit upset win over the Warriors.

Memphis leaves Beale Street this week and will play road games at Houston and Dallas, before returning home to play the same two sides. Monday's game against the Rockets looks to be a great spot to fade the Grizzlies. Our database says undefeated NBA teams off an upset win are just 1-14 SU and 2-13 ATS since 2009, including 0-8 ATS when getting eight or fewer points.

MILWAUKEE (AP) Giannis Antetokounmpo had 32 points and 14 rebounds, and the Milwaukee Bucks scored the final nine points in a 103-94 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Monday night.

Antetokounmpo was 13 for 21 from the field and 6 for 8 at the line. He also had six assists and blocked two shots.

The 22-year-old Antetokounmpo has scored at least 30 points in each of his first four games. He had a career-high 44 points Saturday against Portland.

Khris Middleton added 20 points for Milwaukee, which played its third game in four days, all at home.

Charlotte, which missed its last seven shots after the score was tied at 94, was led by Frank Kaminsky's 18 points. Jeremy Lamb added 17 points, Kemba Walker had 15 and Dwight Howard grabbed 22 rebounds - three shy of the team record.

    76ERS 97, PISTONS 86

DETROIT (AP) - Ben Simmons had a triple-double in his fourth NBA game, Joel Embiid scored 30 points and Philadelphia got its first win of the season.

Simmons had 21 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists, showing off the skill and versatility that made him the No. 1 pick in the 2016 draft before he missed all of last season with a foot injury.

Detroit, which rallied from a 21-point deficit to beat the New York Knicks on Saturday night, fell behind by 21 again in the second quarter against the 76ers. The Pistons chipped away and were within three in the fourth, but Philadelphia held on.

Andre Drummond had 14 points and 14 rebounds for the Pistons.

    GRIZZLIES 98, ROCKETS 90

HOUSTON (AP) - Marc Gasol scored 26 points to lead the Grizzles to another victory.

Memphis has won its first three games for the first time since the 2014-15 season when the team got off to a 6-0 start.

With the game tied at 88 with less than three minutes remaining, tempers flared after Memphis guard Mario Chalmers fell and tripped James Harden, who then shoved Chalmers as he tried to get off the ground. After a lengthy review, each player received a technical and Harden also was called for an offensive foul.

Harden finished with 22 points, eight assists and five rebounds. Eric Gordon led the Rockets with 27 points.

    WARRIORS 133, MAVERICKS 103

DALLAS (AP) - Stephen Curry scored 29 points, Kevin Durant added 25 and Golden State pulled away from winless Dallas.

Klay Thompson had 21 points as the defending champs got back to .500 four games into the season, two nights after losing their cool late in a loss at Memphis.

Curry made all five of his shots inside the 3-point line and all 13 free throws the same day he was fined $50,000 for throwing his mouthpiece in the final minute against the Grizzlies.

Wesley Matthews scored 19 points for the Mavericks, who dropped to 0-4. Harrison Barnes had 13 points against his former team, matching J.J. Barea and Yogi Ferrell. Rookie Dennis Smith Jr. had 10 points after missing two games with left knee swelling.

    HEAT 104, HAWKS 93

MIAMI (AP) - Josh Richardson scored 21 points, Wayne Ellington made six 3-pointers in the second quarter and the Heat wasted a 21-point lead before recovering to beat the Hawks.

Ellington scored 20 points and Goran Dragic finished with 19 for Miami, which went on a 17-6 run in the fourth quarter to help put the game away. Kelly Olynyk had 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Dion Waiters added 10 points for the Heat.

Kent Bazemore and Taurean Prince each scored 20 for the Hawks, while John Collins had 14 points and 11 rebounds.

The Heat started 14 for 24 from 3-point range, and then missed their final 13 tries from beyond the arc.

    SPURS 101, RAPTORS 97

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - LaMarcus Aldridge scored 20 points and Dejounte Murray had 16 points and 15 rebounds, powering the Spurs to the win.

San Antonio was without Kawhi Leonard and Tony Parker, and Toronto played without Jonas Valanciunas. Their absences were noticeable in the flow of each team's offense.

The Spurs had a season-high 20 turnovers. They were averaging 11 turnovers in their first two games, but had four in the opening four minutes.

DeMar DeRozan had 28 points for the Raptors.

GM: Bledsoe likely done in Phoenix
    October 23, 2017

Phoenix Suns point guard Eric Bledsoe was sent home, will not play in Monday night's game against the Sacramento Kings and likely has played his final game for the team, general manager Ryan McDonough told reporters Monday.

The Suns met with the 27-year-old Bledsoe before a shootaround Monday morning and he left at the end of the discussion.

McDonough is actively engaged with several teams in trade talks for Bledsoe, according to multiple reports.

Monday's meeting occurred a day after the Suns fired coach Earl Watson.

Bledsoe summed up his frustration in a tweet before Sunday's announcement of the coaching change surfaced: "I Dont wanna be here."

Bledsoe later tried to put that tweet in context, although McDonough wasn't buying the excuse.

"He said he was at a hair salon. ... I didn't believe that to be true," McDonough said. "He won't be with us going forward."

The Suns lost 130-88 on Saturday night to the Los Angeles Clippers, dropping to 0-3 to start the season. It was the Suns' second loss by 40-plus points this season.

The team announced Sunday night that associate head coach Jay Triano was taking over for Watson as interim head coach.

Watson was beginning his second full year on the job after being promoted from assistant coach to interim coach when Jeff Hornacek was fired on Feb. 1, 2016. Watson signed a three-year contract as head coach on April 19, 2016. The Suns went 33-85 on his watch.

"The whole team is embarrassed," Bledsoe said after the loss to the Clippers, then shouldered some of the blame. "I think I have to do a better job of being a leader and a floor general out there."

Of the Suns' start to the season, Bledsoe said, "It happens, but not to this point."

Bledsoe is averaging 15.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists for the Suns this season -- his fifth with the team. He is entering his eighth NBA season and owns career averages of 13.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists.

Point guard Eric Bledsoe leaves Suns
    October 23, 2017

PHOENIX (AP) Phoenix point guard Eric Bledsoe was sent home Monday, a day after the Suns fired coach Earl Watson and replaced him on an interim basis with Jay Triano.

About the time that word of Watson's firing was leaking out, Bledsoe sent a tweet Sunday that read ''Don't wanna be here.''

General manager Ryan McDonough said Bledsoe told him that he was at a hair salon and that's what the tweet was about, that it had nothing to do with the Suns. ''I don't believe that to be true,'' McDonough said.

    So Bledsoe was sent home.

McDonough said he's already received calls from teams about Bledsoe's availability and he planned to answer them. McDonough said Bledsoe had asked to be traded before the season.

McDonough also acknowledged his relationship with Watson ''wasn't great'' and that it is ''time for a new voice, a new direction.''

The Suns also fired assistant coaches Nate Bjorkgren, Jason Fraser and Mehmet Okur. Tyrone Corbin was elevated to lead assistant and Ty Ellis, head coach of the Northern Arizona Suns G League team, will fill one of the vacant assistant roles. Marlon Garnett was promoted from player development coordinator to bench coach.

Watson's firing came three games into the season, two of them among the four most one-sided defeats in franchise history. McDonough said those ugly losses weren't the sole reason for the firing.

''We had a number of meetings over the summer about some of the changes we would have liked to see in terms of style of play and player development and accountability,'' McDonough said, ''all those things that go into winning and helping players develop and improve. Unfortunately, we didn't see those changes.''

McDonough said Triano would be head coach the remainder of the season.

Triano, 59, came to the Suns as associate head coach in the summer of 2016 after four years as an assistant to Terry Stotts in Portland. Triano was head coach of the Toronto Raptors from 2008 to 2011. He also was head coach of the Canadian National Team.

Triano described himself as a basketball guy and said he didn't know if he wanted the job beyond this season.

''We'll see how it goes,'' Triano said, ''but I'm going to embrace it 100 percent and dive into it like I have everything else in my career.''

Bledsoe had been averaging 15.7 points per game, second behind Devin Booker, and was the team's on-court leader.

The candidates to replace him are Mike James, who was undrafted in 2012 but played internationally before coming to the Suns this season, and Tyler Ulis, a second-round pick in 2016.

The Suns have allowed a whopping 128.7 points per game, by far the worst in the league. They were blown out 124-76 at home in their season opener Wednesday, the most one-sided loss in franchise history.

''I know it's been a short period of time (three games), but as the days went by there were more and more things that we were uncomfortable with,'' McDonough said, ''so we arrived at this conclusion yesterday morning to make the change.''

McDonough, who said he recommended the firing to owner Robert Sarver, accepted some responsibility for the team's troubles.

''I think we all do,'' McDonough said. ''I think Robert does. I think I do. It reflects poorly on all of us and we own that and we take responsibility for that.''

Triano is Phoenix's fifth coach since 2013.

''I've pretty much seen it all now with my years in the NBA,'' Booker said. ''You've got to control the controllables.''

An interesting comment since Booker, the highly talented face of the franchise, is just 20 and in his third NBA season. A strong supporter of Watson, Booker said the players are responsible for the awful performances.

''You can't blame two 40-point losses on a coach,'' Booker said. ''That comes with pride. It comes with effort and love for the game. We haven't shown that yet.''

Under Watson, ''there was a lack of development,'' McDonough said. ''There was a lack of individual player improvement and growth. We realize kind of where we are as a franchise in terms of being young, being in the developmental stage, but at the same time we expect to be competitive and for the guys to play hard and be put into positions to be effective offensively and defensively and we didn't feel like that was being done.''

McDonough said he expects that to improve under Triano, mentioning defense, ball movement and 3-point shooting.

As if things weren't bad enough, the Suns were awaiting word from the NBA on whether rookie Josh Jackson would be punished for making a gesture toward a heckling fan Saturday night in Los Angeles.

It looked like Jackson was simulating a gun but he said that wasn't the case.

Jackson said he initially was going to give the guy the middle finger but decided against it and the gesture inadvertently wound up looking like a gun.

    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

    — Mets named Indians pitching coach Mickey Calloway their new manager.

    — Red Sox will name Astros bench coach Alex Cora their new manager.

    — Last year’s Houston Rockets tried 40+ 3-pointers in half of their 82 games; the team with next highest number in one season was 12 games- the Rockets in 2015.

    — UTEP, Oregon State, Georgia Southern have all fired their football coach, and the World Series hasn’t even started yet.

    — When Chargers shut Denver out 21-0 Sunday, it was the first time the Broncos had been shut out since 1992.

    — Eagles 34, Redskins 24— Kirk Cousins is now 0-9 on weeknights, 0-6 on Monday nights.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……..

    13) Statistics are fun, they can be educational, but they can also be really misleading; take the Carolina Panthers’ defensive stats, which should be really good this week, because Carolina’s offense was so terrible that Chicago scored two defensive TD’s early on, then just sat on their 14-0 lead and didn’t even try to score with the ball. Bears had five first downs, gained 153 yards on 37 plays for the whole game, but they won by two TD’s. Very unusual.

    12) I’d be curious to know in all the fantasy football leagues around the country, what the teams’ records were in Week 7 that had Aaron Rodgers on them? I had Rodgers on my team when he got hurt in 2013; lets just say things didn’t go too well from that point on.

    11) We post the six most popular picks in the Westgate SuperContest each week; thru seven weeks, those picks are just 15-27 vs spread, which means sports books are making a killing so far this season. Handicapping the NFL is a minefield that is very tough to navigate.

    10) Cleveland Browns’ tackle Joe Thomas played 10 years and six games without missing a single play, a streak more impressive than Cal Ripken’s iron man streak, but he got hurt Sunday and is now out for the season with a triceps injury. Thomas is a future Hall of Famer.

    9) Cubs fired pitching coach Chris Bosio; they won the World Series last year, did Bosio get a lot dumber all of a sudden?

San Francisco Giants also re-assigned most of their coaches, including pitching coach Dave Righetti, who had been in that job since 2000. Giants won three World Series in this decade; maybe they should re-assign the person who put together such an aging roster this past season.

    8) Army’s football team has already accepted a bowl bid, to the Armed Forces Bowl on Dec 23. At 6-2, the Cadets are having a breakthrough season.

    7) Ole Miss QB Shea Patterson is out for the year after getting hurt against LSU Saturday nite. Been a rough year for the Rebels, who are playing with an interim head coach.

    6) Dallas Cowboys kicker Dan Bailey tweaked a leg muscle in San Francisco Sunday; one of the Cowboys’ safeties (Jeff Heath) kicked a field goal, banking it in off the right upright. Cowboys are holding tryouts for a backup kicker this week.

    5) This is how competitive pro golf is around the world: In fall of 2016, 30 guys won their cards for the European Tour for 2017 at Q-School. Of those 30 guys, only two have their cards for 2018.

    4) Michigan State has a running back named LJ Scott who is pretty good, but he’s been arrested seven times, all for roughly the same thing— unpaid traffic tickets, driving without a license or with a suspended license. How do they keep letting him play? It is mostly harmless stuff, but it shows a lack of respect for rules and sends a bad message that he is playing.

Back in the day, my man Jerry Tarkanian would’ve done this: assign a staff member to take care of his traffic issues for him. Drive him to DMV to pay his fines and renew his license. The better the kid was, the more important it was to keep him eligible and out of trouble.

    3) I’m watching 76ers-Pistons game as I type this; game is in Detroit’s new downtown arena and the crowd there is really small. Does every NBA team make money?

    2) Denver Broncos have played two road games, scoring one TD on 23 drives; should they explore trading for Eli Manning? Giants are on their bye week; Denver could use a QB. Giants might need to start a rebuilding process.

    1) Cleveland Browns should sign Colin Kaepernick; it would diffuse his lawsuit against the NFL, then people could see in plain view whether he is still good enough to keep playing in the league. Plus, there is no way he is worse than the three suspects who’ve been playing QB for the Browns this season. Then they can draft a top-flight QB prospect next April and move on.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….. *
