Cavaliers carry NBA's worst ATS record into Toronto for showdown vs. Raptors
    Ashton Grewal

The Toronto Raptors are playing the best basketball in the franchise’s 22-year history and are on pace to set a new single-season wins record with 59. They’re second in the Eastern Conference at 28-11 and are a tidy 22-17 against the spread in their first 39 games.

They own the third-best point differential (+7.7) and net rating (+7.4) in the league behind only the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets. The Raptors and the Warriors are the only two teams in the league inside the top five in both offensive rating and defensive rating.

All these feel-good numbers get thrown out the window when one person’s name is mentioned: LeBron James. Don’t get in a knife fight with Crocodile Dundee; don’t enter a dance-off opposite Derek Hough and don’t expect to win in the East unless LBJ is on your team.

James and the Cleveland Cavaliers come to the T.dot on Thursday for the early game of the TNT doubleheader knowing they own the Raptors. The Cavs played the Dinos in two of the last three years in the playoffs and made short work of them each time. Cleveland went 8-2 straight up and 7-2-1 against the spread vs. Toronto in those two playoff series, and it wasn't even really that close. DeMar DeRozan summed it up best after his team was swept out of the playoffs last spring.

The memories of that four-game sweep might still be in the heads of the Raptors when they play the Cavs for the first time since, but they can take comfort knowing they play the Cavs much closer outside of the postseason. Cleveland has won six of the last 10 meetings but eight of those games were decided by single digits. Toronto is 6-4 ATS in its last 10 regular season matchups against the Cavs.

The Raptors’ reputation around the league is based off their accomplishments in the regular season, and their rise to power in the Atlantic came at the same time James teamed up with Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love in Cleveland. Toronto has won 49, 56 and 51 games the last three years but disappointed in the postseason each time. The Raps are 10-23-1 against the spread in their last 24 playoff games and 112-90-1 ATS in their last 203 regular season contests.

The Cavaliers in their second go-round with James have been the polar opposite. Since the King returned to Cleveland, the Cavs are 124-155-7 against the spread in the regular season and 33-25-1 ATS in the playoffs. And while they’ve never been a winning ATS bet, this season has been the hardest on the wallets of their backers. The Cavaliers own the worst ATS record in the league at 12-27-1 – which translates into a 30.8 percent win rate.

The four-time defending Eastern Conference champions are coming off a 28-point loss – their largest defeat of the campaign – and carry with them into Toronto the second-worst defensive rating in the league.

The Reptiles have their own warts going into battle against Cleveland. For all the winning they’ve done early on, it’s been mostly against soft competition thanks to the 25th toughest schedule in the season’s first half.

Toronto’s starting point guard, Kyle Lowry, is questionable with a bruised tailbone and its starting power forward, Serge Ibaka, is serving a one-game suspension after throwing a punch at Miami Heat forward James Johnson on Tuesday.

Oddsmakers are waiting on the status of Lowry before putting this game on the board, but bettors should expect the game to be close to a pick ‘em.

NBA Game of the Day: Cavaliers at Raptors betting preview and odds
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Cavaliers at Toronto Raptors (+3.5, 218.5)

The Cleveland Cavaliers are coming off one of their worst performances just in time to face one of the hottest teams in the Eastern Conference. The Cavaliers will try to solve their defensive woes in time to stop DeMar DeRozan and company when they visit the Toronto Raptors on Thursday.

Cleveland dropped six of its last nine games and was embarrassed 127-99 at the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday, and Isaiah Thomas simplified the team's issues. "We've just got to play harder," Thomas told ESPN.com. "We've got to play harder on both ends, we've got to push the pace offensively, we've got to pressure up defensively and take teams out of what they want to do. Teams are doing whatever they want to us at that end of the floor. I think if we do that then that will be half the battle. We'll fix things on offense, but defensively we've just got to play harder, be more physical, take away what teams want to do." The Raptors had a five-game overall winning streak and a 12-game home surge come to an end with a 90-89 loss to the Miami Heat on Tuesday. "We always focus on the last few possessions, but the stuff was building up, the lack of ball movement, spacing, cutting, playing with force, we didn't do it," Raptors coach Dwane Casey told reporters.

    TV:
8 p.m. ET, TNT, Sportsnet One (Toronto)

    LINE HISTORY:
This line was late being released due to some injury questions for Toronto, but once the line hit the board the Cavaliers opened as 1-point road favorites and the total opened at 220. Those numbers were quickly adjusted as the public hit the Cavs hard and forced books to move the Toronto line up to +3.5 and the total was dropped slightly to 218.5.

    INJURY REPORT:

Cavaliers - PG D. Rose (Out Indefinitely, Ankle), SG I. Shumpert (Late Jan, Knee).

Raptors - PG K. Lowry (Doubful, Tailbone), PF S. Ibaka (Out, Suspension).

    POWER RANKINGS:
    Cavaliers (-4.8) - Raptors (-10.3) + home court (-3) = Raptors -8.5

    MATCHUP CHART:

    ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (26-14 SU, 12-27-1 ATS, 19-20-1 O/U):
Cleveland star LeBron James is playing at his usual MVP form this season but suffered through one of the worst games of his career on Monday, when he scored 10 points -- his lowest total since 2007 -- and registered a plus-minus of minus-39 -- the worst mark of his career. James, who insisted "I don't give a damn about no damn plus-minus," was coming off a performance at Orlando on Saturday in which he collected 33 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists and six steals. Power forward Kevin Love, who scored 27 points in that win over the Magic, managed just three points on 1-of-7 shooting at Minnesota.

    ABOUT THE RAPTORS (28-11 SU, 22-17 ATS, 20-19 O/U):
Toronto was playing without point guard Kyle Lowry on Tuesday after he suffered a back injury late in Monday's win over Brooklyn, and the difference in the offense was noticeable. "I mean, the whole game is completely different without Kyle. It's everything. Everything," DeRozan told reporters. "You can kind of tell with our ball movement wasn't all the way there like it normally be when Kyle's out there. Like I said, he's a general on the floor. He sees things when they need to be called." Lowry, who averaged 20.5 points in four regular-season games against the Cavaliers last season, had x-rays come back negative and is considered day-to-day.

    TRENDS:

    * Cavaliers are 0-7 ATS in their last 7 road games.
    * Raptors are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games playing on 1 days rest.
    * Under is 7-0-1 in Cavaliers last 8 vs. NBA Atlantic.
    * Under is 5-1 in Raptors last 6 home games.
    * Cavaliers are 4-0-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings in Toronto.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Big night for road dogs in the NBA last night.
Away teams went 8-3 against the spread and road underdogs went a very slick 7-3 ATS.

Bettors are hammering Cleveland for their TNT meeting tonight at Toronto.
Pointspread opened as Raptors +1 about an hour ago, now up to TOR +4 at some shops.

    Thursday's Top Wagers
    January 10, 2018

Busy NBA Thursday Betting Begins With Celtics-Sixers in England

The NBA Thursday betting lines haven’t been released yet except for one game, and that’s fine because the mathchups speak for themselves.

The Cleveland-Toronto line will probably favor the Cavs for public reasons, even though the Raptors are a great regular season bet. As for the Lakers and Kings? You can’t possible be serious about backing them even if they are attractive home dogs.

    Thursday morning for these lines!

    Boston Celtics -3 over Philadelphia 76ers (3:00 p.m. ET)

The NBA is sending two of its best betting teams over to London, England to play at the O2 Arena which helps explain why this line is so tight. Overseas travel, along with some unknown distractions such as sight seeing, can make for difficult handicapping. The Celtics are a goldmine away from home at 15-5 ATS while the 76ers are just 10-10 ATS when travelling.

Compounding problems for Philadelphia is the ongoing health problems of Joel Embiid. He is probably for the Thursday NBA game in London despite a sudden back issue that he suffered while playing Detroit and dropping 29 points and 9 rebounds. At full health, Embiid is an obvious problem for the Celtics but if he’s limited in minutes or in movement, then this game belongs to Boston.

Truth be told, Boston is a must-bet team anyways. A recent 6-0 SU run has been matched by a very strong 4-2 ATS line while Al Horford, Kyrie Irving and Jason Tatum are quickly becoming one of the most intriguing three-man sets in the league. The athletic Tatum has been making noise as a Rookie of the Year candidate despite a modest stat line of 13.9 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game.

Philadelphia enters this game with a great 5-1 SU and ATS streak that is only blemished by a completely excusable loss to Portland on the road. What’s more important is that they whooped Denver 107-102 and outlasted the Spurs 112-106. There’s surely an upset brewing here, but I think that the travel to London combined with the focus of the Celtics make Boston a strong bet against an absurdly tight line.

Al Horford is expected to play despite some knee soreness that kept him out of the game.

Toronto Raptors over Cleveland Cavaliers (8:00 p.m. ET)

This is sort of another internationally located game? The Raptors will look to measure themselves against the free-falling Cavaliers in a game that’s truly difficult to call. Toronto has managed to be another decent bet at 22-17 ATS on the season, but have gone just 5-1 SU and 3-3 ATS in their last 6 games. They’re coming off a brutal, unraveling loss to Miami at home as well with a potential suspension for DeMar DeRozan hanging over this matchup. The superstar guard threw a punch at Goran Dragic after the 89-90 loss but nothing has come down the pipeline just yet.

This will be the first meeting of the two teams since Cleveland swept them out of the 2017 NBA playoffs in the second round while going 3-0-1 ATS. In short, the Cavaliers tend to own the Raptors. The problem is that they have not been playing well at all on the road.

Cleveland is just 1-6 SU and 0-7 ATS when travelling recently, with a lone 131-127 victory against Orlando that faced a daunting -9.0 point line. Cleveland is getting hammered in the paint these days and their rim defence is shameful. That’s why the DeAndre Jordan rumors keep gaining steam. But I truthfully don’t know how much of an improvement he is over Tristan Thompson, who can barely stay on the floor these days. Toronto is fourth in paint points with 48.2 per game and can feed their big men down low to haunt Cleveland.

Kyle Lowry’s injury seems like a reason to bet against Toronto, but it’s not. Delon Wright has really come in to his own as a backup and went for 13-4-7 against Miami the other night in Lowry’s place. Unless DeRozan is suspended, the Raptors have plenty of firepower to pace with LeBron James and the paint presence to expose the Cavaliers’ biggest flaw. This is also a preview of whether rookie OG Anunoby has what it takes to be a LeBron stopper, which is what Toronto desperately needs come April so they can avoid the attack of the brooms again in the post season.

Los Angeles Clippers over Sacramento Kings (10:00 p.m. ET)

The big advantage for Sacramento is that they’re hosting the Clippers the day after Blake Griffin and company have to deal with Golden State. The downside is that this is still the woeful Sacramento Kings who have gone just 1-5 SU and ATS in the last six games. The Clippers are not a guaranteed play themselves, but if you have to bet on anyone in this matchup, it’s them. Sacramento is coming off an embarrassing 86-99 loss to the Lakers and have zero identity.

San Antonio Spurs over Los Angeles Lakers (10:30 p.m. ET)

I hate admitting that I’ve been transfixed on the Lakers this season, but they’re just so damn fascinating. Lonzo Ball aside, Kyle Kuzma is incredible. They’ve coupled two strong wins over the lackluster Atlanta and Sacramento to go 2-0 SU and ATS after running a winless eight-game streak with a 1-7 ATS record to match. So as fun as they might be to analyze and yell about, they’re a terrible bet. Plus, San Antonio is 18-2 ATS when playing at home. Kawhi Leonard is questionable for the game, but it hasn’t mattered. Gregg Popovich has his second unit absolutely pumping out points. This team is going to be awesome when they trade for George Hill.

Cavs routed by Raptors in 133-99 debacle
    January 11, 2018

TORONTO (AP) LeBron James and the struggling Cleveland Cavaliers absorbed their most-lopsided loss of the season when they were routed by the Toronto Raptors 133-99 on Thursday night.

The Cavaliers have dropped six of eight dating to a Christmas Day loss at defending champion Golden State. James scored 26 points in this loss, while Isaiah Thomas missed his first 11 shots.

After losing to Minnesota 127-99 on Monday night, the Cavaliers fell by an even bigger margin. Toronto's 133 points were the most by any Cleveland opponent this season, and marked the third straight game that Cleveland has allowed at least 127.

Fred VanVleet scored a career-high 22 points, Jonas Valanciunas had 15 points and a season-high 18 rebounds and the Raptors overcame the absences of two starters.

C.J. Miles scored 16 points, Pascal Siakam and Norm Powell each had 14 and DeMar DeRozan 13 for the Raptors, who were without point guard Kyle Lowry (bruised tailbone) and forward Serge Ibaka (suspension).

    CELTICS 114, 76ERS 103

LONDON (AP) - Kyrie Irving had 20 points, seven assists and six rebounds and Boston overcame a 22-point deficit to beat Philadelphia in the eighth NBA game played in England.

Jaylen Brown added 21 points, and Marcus Morris had 19 points and eight rebounds to help the Eastern Conference-leading Celtics extend their winning streak to seven games.

JJ Redick had 22 points and hit five 3-pointers for Philadelphia, but the 76ers were unable to take advantage of their fast start as the Celtics' NBA-best defense tightened at O2 Arena.

Joel Embiid had 16 points, and fellow All-Star hopeful Ben Simmons added 15 for the 76ers.

    LAKERS 93, SPURS 81

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Brandon Ingram scored 26 points, Lonzo Ball added 18 and Los Angeles beat short-handed San Antonio for its first three-game winning streak of the season.

Larry Nance Jr. had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Lakers, who blew an early 19-point lead before running away in the fourth quarter. Ball contributed 10 rebounds and six assists as Los Angeles snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Spurs at Staples Center since April 2013, the last time the Lakers made the playoffs.

LaMarcus Aldridge scored 15 of his 20 points in the first half for the Spurs, who committed 21 turnovers while playing without injured starters Kawhi Leonard, Tony Parker and Danny Green.

    CLIPPERS 121, KINGS 115

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Tyrone Wallace intercepted a pass at midcourt and drove in for a dunk with 10.9 seconds left, moments after what looked like a costly turnover by Lou Williams, and Los Angeles held off Sacramento after blowing a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter.

The Clippers, who lost DeAndre Jordan to a sprained left ankle in the second quarter, won their third straight over the Kings this season and their 11th in a row at Sacramento.

Williams finished with 30 points and six assists, one night after scoring a career-high 50 against defending champion Golden State. Blake Griffin had 18 points, 12 rebounds and six assists in his return to the Clippers after missing two games with a concussion, and Montrezl Harrell scored a season-best 25 - including 16 in the second quarter when Los Angeles put up 43 points.

The Clippers led 106-92 early in the fourth before the Kings rallied to go ahead 113-112 on Bogdan Bogdanovich's layup with 2:10 remaining.

Griffin followed with a 3-pointer and Williams later scored on a short jumper.

Bogdanovich scored 22 points and George Hill added 21, but he missed two free throws over the final 70 seconds.

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind……..

    13) MaxPreps did a thing looking at where the 12 starting QB’s for the NFL playoff teams went to high school; three are from California (Goff-Brady-Smith), three are from Texas (Brees-Foles-Keenum). Matt Ryan is from Philly; he’s going home this weekend.

    12) Good news from Charlotte, where Hornets coach Steve Clifford has been cleared to return after missing more than a month to deal with severe headaches. Clifford has worked his way up the coaching ladder; in 1994-95, he was an assistant coach at Siena College here in Albany.

    11) Oregon 76, Arizona State 72— Sun Devils are 1-3 in Pac-12 after being unbeaten coming into league play. Big road win for the Ducks.

    10) Lorenzo Brown scored 24 points, had 12 assists for Toronto’s G-League team Thursday, then played 19 minutes for the parent Raptors in their win over Cleveland last night. Thats a full day.

    9) NFL announced three London games for next season:
    — Seahawks-Raiders, Eagles-Jaguars, Titans-Chargers

Rams are expected to play in the 2018 Mexico City game.

    8) Underrated NBA record: Ricky Pierce scored 30+ points coming off the bench in 17 games one season, while playing for Milwaukee in 1990.

    7) Wednesday, agents with U.S. Immigration, Customs Enforcement descended on 98 7-Eleven franchise stores across America, where they began audits and interviewed employees and managers. 21 people suspected of being in the United States illegally were arrested.

Those 98 7-Eleven stores were located in 17 different states, plus the District of Columbia.

    6) Disappointed that ESPN scrapped Big Monday; they still have their Monday twinbills, but they don’t call it Big Monday anymore. Back in the day, ESPN had Big East/Big Ten/Big West triple headers every Monday, and they were mostly great fun.

Jerry Tarkanian’s UNLV teams, Bob Knight bitching about 9:00 starts, the heyday of the Big East before they expanded into the Midwest and signed up with FS1. Jerome Lane’s dunk breaking the backboard at Pitt was on a Big Monday— Arizona coach Sean Miller threw him the pass.

If I ran ESPN, I’d ask the WCC if they would be interested in Monday night broadcasts, seeing how today’s Gonzaga is a lot like Tark’s UNLV squads— a powerful program carrying an entire league on its shoulders. National TV exposure helps recruiting.

    5) Louisville’s basketball team is headed to probation over its handling of Brian Bowen’s recruitment; the kid will wind up playing for South Carolina, starting next season. Before he could announce the signing, coach Frank Martin had ti to get it signed off by the school’s AD and compliance people, so if it all got this far, Bowen should be good to go.

    4) Odd Fact: Every Norwegian’s income tax return is published on the Interweb.

    3) Huge week for Western Kentucky’s basketball team; 4-star recruit, big man Moustapha Diagne has been cleared to play by the NCAA, making the Hilltoppers a legit 9-deep team. WKU won its last two games on the road, at Marshall/Old Dominion.

    2) Carolina Panthers hired Norv Turner as their new OC; he is a great QB guru who should help Cam Newton a lot.

    1) Get well soon Alex Trebek; the 77-year old Jeopardy host was diagnosed with a subdural hematoma and is on leave from the show after brain surgery.

Trebek also hosted gameshows like The Wizard of Odds, Double Dare and High Rollers.

Pacers come from 22 down to hand Cavs third straight loss
    January 12, 2018

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Lance Stephenson had 16 points and 11 rebounds, Darren Collison scored 22 points and the Indiana Pacers rallied from a 22-point, first-half deficit to beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 97-95 on Friday night.

The Pacers have won three of four and improved to 3-0 against the three-time defending Eastern Conference champs.

LeBron James did everything he could to prevent the Cavs from losing a third straight game. He finished with 27 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds, while Kevin Love had 21 points and 10 rebounds.

But James had two chances in the final two seconds to win it and missed both opportunities - after Victor Oladipo gave Indiana the lead for good on a 3-pointer with 2:09 left in the game.

First, the four-time MVP stepped out of bounds with 1.7 seconds to go, a play that was confirmed on replay review. Then, after Collison made a free throw to give the Pacers a 97-95 lead, James' desperation 3 bounced high off the rim as the buzzer sounded.

    WARRIORS 108, BUCKS 94

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Kevin Durant scored 26 points, Draymond Green added 21 and Golden State used a 13-4 run in the fourth quarter to beat Milwaukee.

With sharpshooting star Stephen Curry still sidelined by a right ankle injury, the Warriors clamped down on defense and did most of their damage on the other end in the lane.

Durant's mid-range jumper gave Golden State a 96-90 lead before the All-Star forward hit an open 3 with 2:15 left to cap the run with a three-possession lead. The Warriors were just 3 of 13 from 3-point range until Durant and Green hit back-to-back 3s in the final 3 minutes to seal their 11th straight road win.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had 23 points to lead the Bucks. They were outscored 28-12 in the fourth after hitting just 5 of 20 from the field.

    TIMBERWOLVES 118, KNICKS 108

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Karl-Anthony Towns fell one assist shy of his second career triple-double, scoring 23 points and grabbing 15 rebounds in Minnesota's victory over New York.

Taj Gibson added 17 points and Andrew Wiggins had 16 for Minnesota. The Timberwolves shot 56.7 percent (38 of 67) over the final three quarters to come from behind and win their fourth game in a row and 11th of 14 overall.

Kristaps Porzingis scored 17 points for New York. Porzingis was 3 of 5 from 3-point territory but 3 of 14 from inside the arc. Enes Kanter had his 18th double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, but the Knicks lost for the ninth time in 11 games.

    WIZARDS 125, MAGIC 119

WASHINGTON (AP) - Bradley Beal and John Wall each scored 30 points and Washington snapped a two-game losing streak.

Ian Mahinmi finished with a season-high 17 points in the defense-optional game. Washington shot 56.8 percent from the field and scored a season-high 74 points in the paint.

Orlando has lost seven in a row, 16 of 17 and 27 of its last 31. That stretch included a 130-103 rout by Washington on Dec. 23.

Elfrid Payton scored 27 points and Jonathon Simmons had 23 as all five Orlando starters reached double figures. Bismack Biyombo finished 8 of 9 from the field for a career-high 21 points. The Magic hit 51.3 percent of their attempts from the floor after a 6-for-22 fourth quarter.

    PELICANS 119, TRAIL BLAZERS 113

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Anthony Davis scored 36 points in his return from a right ankle sprain, and New Orleans beat Portland.

Davis did not appear at all bothered by the injury that kept him out of Wednesday night's narrow loss in Memphis, scoring on everything from explosive dribble drives to soaring dunks.

DeMarcus Cousins had 24 points and 19 rebounds, and Jrue Holiday scored 25 points for New Orleans, which hit the halfway point of the regular season one game above .500 and in the Western Conference playoff picture, but still in need of more consistency and less sloppiness.

Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum each scored 23 points for Portland, which attempted 42 3-pointers and missed 30 of them.

    HORNETS 99, JAZZ 88

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Kemba Walker scored 22 points and Frank Kaminsky added 16 to lead Charlotte over Utah for its fourth victory in six games.

Marvin Williams scored 15 and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist 12 for Charlotte, which won despite an off night for Dwight Howard, who scored just two first-half points. Howard finished with eight points on 2-of-9 shooting. He also went 4 for 10 from the foul line.

Nicolas Batum and Jeremy Lamb added 11 points apiece for Charlotte.

Donovan Mitchell scored 35 points for Utah, which has lost 14 of 19. Rodney Hood added 15 and Royce O'Neale 11 for Utah, which had been 10-3 when holding opponents to 100 points or fewer.

    NETS 110, HAWKS 105

ATLANTA (AP) - Spencer Dinwiddie had 20 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds, Jahlil Okafor added 17 points in a reserve role and Brooklyn beat Atlanta.

Dinwiddie made the go-ahead basket with 11 seconds left as the Nets snapped a three-game losing streak to move past an embarrassing 34-point home loss to Detroit two nights earlier.

Atlanta guard Dennis Schroder finished with a career-high 34 points, but after causing matchup problems all night with his ball-handling, he missed his last two layup attempts and committed a game-ending turnover with 5 seconds remaining.

Kent Bazemore had 16 points for the NBA-worst Hawks, who have lost five of six.
