Ovechkin reaches 600 goals as Capitals beat Jets 3-2
    March 12, 2018

WASHINGTON (AP) Alex Ovechkin scored twice to reach 600 goals and Evgeny Kuznetsov had the overtime winner as the Washington Capitals returned to first place by beating the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 on Monday.

Ovechkin scored in each of the first two periods to get to 42 this season. The Russian winger became the 20th player and fourth-fastest in NHL history to 600 goals and is on pace to lead the league in goals for the seventh time.

Kuznetsov made it a night of celebration for Washington by scoring on a breakaway 4:11 into overtime.

Jets winger Patrik Laine scored his 16th in the past 12 games to get to 41 goals this season. Nikolaj Ehlers also scored a 4-on-4 goal for Winnipeg, which got 40 saves from Connor Hellebuyck.

Capitals goaltender Philipp Grubauer stopped 26 shots in his third consecutive start.

    GOLDEN KNIGHTS 3, FLYERS 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Marc-Andre Fleury made 38 saves to become the 13th goalie in NHL history with 400 career victories, and Ryan Carpenter scored the winning goal for Vegas with 2:40 left.

Erik Haula and William Karlsson also scored for the Pacific Division leaders, who completed a 4-1 road trip.

Fleury, who earned his first NHL win on Oct. 18, 2003, became the third active goalie to reach the milestone, joining Roberto Luongo and Henrik Lundqvist.

Claude Giroux and Wayne Simmonds scored for the Flyers, who have lost six of seven.

    BLUE JACKETS 5, CANADIENS 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Seth Jones was the driving force behind two power-play goals in the first period, helping the Blue Jackets to their fifth consecutive victory.

Alexander Wennberg had a goal and three assists for Columbus, and Nick Foligno, Boone Jenner and Ian Cole also scored.

Behind a run of eight wins in 11 games overall, the Blue Jackets moved past idle New Jersey into the first wild-card position in the Eastern Conference. Columbus also pulled within two points of third-place Philadelphia in the Metropolitan Division.

Brendan Gallagher and Jonathan Drouin scored for banged-up Montreal, which has lost five straight. The Canadiens have been playing without Carey Price, Max Pacioretty and Shea Weber.

    RANGERS 6, HURRICANES 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Jimmy Vesey scored three times, Mats Zuccarello had two goals and the Rangers stopped a three-game slide.

Vladislav Namestnikov also scored for the Rangers, who earned their first home win since Feb. 9. Pavel Buchnevich and Mika Zibanejad each had three assists.

Backup goalie Alexandar Georgiev made 41 saves for his second win of the season.

Teuvo Teravainen, Lee Stempniak and Victor Rask scored for the Hurricanes. Scott Darling, who has struggled in his first season with Carolina, made 17 stops.

    SENATORS 5, PANTHERS 3

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) - Matt Duchene scored twice, including the go-ahead goal with three minutes left, and Ottawa got the road win.

Magnus Paajarvi also had two goals for Ottawa, and Jean-Gabriel Pageau added one late. Craig Anderson made 35 saves, and Erik Karlsson and Mike Hoffman each added two assists.

Jonathan Huberdeau, Mike Matheson and Evgenii Dadonov scored for the Panthers, who had won eight straight home games. Vincent Trocheck had two assists, but Roberto Luongo allowed five goals on 25 shots.

The Panthers are three points behind New Jersey for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

    — 109 different golfers have won a PGA tournament since the last time Eldrick Woods won.

    — Neil Walker gets $4M for one year from the Bronx Bombers.

    — This is first time in 21 years the Spurs will have a losing road record.

    — There are 30 sets of brothers playing Division I basketball this season.

    — ESPN is running an all-night marathon related to the college basketball tournament; it is a little like a bizarre ESPN variety show. It is oddly entertaining.

    — I wish that kids who enter the NBA Draft but aren’t selected would be allowed to go back to their college team, no harm done. Maybe that can happen soon.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

    13) Been a rough sports year for the Pac-12; they went 1-8 in bowl games last fall, and now got only three teams in March Madness, two of them in play-in games. USC was shunned, but maybe that was because of the FBI stuff.

Maybe if more people could watch the Pac-12 Network (hint, hint), they’d get screwed over less on Selection Sunday.

    12) Creighton-Kansas State is really interesting, because the Bluejays’ best player is Marcus Foster, who played the first two years of his college career at…….Kansas State.

    11) Did agent Scott Boras cost Royals’ 3B Mike Moustakas $38.5M this winter?

There are stories on the Interweb that Boras turned down a 3-year, $45M deal with the Angels, who later signed Zach Cosart instead. Moustakas, who also turned down the $17.5M qualifying offer from the Royals, wound up signing back with Kansas City for $6.5M for 2018.

    Oy.

    10) College basketball coaching carousel:
    — Lorenzo Romar returns to Pepperdine; he coached the Waves from 1996-99.
    — Cal-Northridge hires former NC State coach Mark Gottfried.

    9) Goalie Alex Nedeljkovic became only the 13th goalie in AHL history to score a goal when he found an empty net in Charlotte’s 7-3 win over Hartford last week.

    8) When Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield went to the NFL Combine, he was interviewed by 11 different teams (15:00 each). Would be curious how similar the interviews were.

    7) When Richard Sherman signed with the 49ers over the weekend, he represented himself, saving the 3% agents normally get. Sherman saved roughly $210,000 by doing that, but did he get himself the best deal possible?

Writer Mke Florio points out that if he signed the same deal with the Lions as he did with the 49ers, Sherman would’ve paid $1,176,500 less in state taxes. Maybe he wanted to stay in the NFC West; only he knows for sure.

    6) Basketball teams that run the Princeton offense generally practice all different kinds of layups for eight minutes in every practice; why doesn’t everyone do this?

Seems like that would be an important skill to have, to be creative close to the basket.

    5) Providence lost in the Big East finals Saturday night; all three of their tournament games went to overtime, which doesn’t happen very often.

    4) Good grief, I’m tired of the Masters commercials; they started in freakin’ January, before the Super Bowl. Its a golf tournament on a really nice course, we get it. Enough already.

    3) Listening to Nevada coach Eric Musselman Sunday night, he kind of threw St Mary’s under the bus as far as scheduling goes.

Nevada added four games to their schedule as late as August (URI, Texas Tech, TCU, Davidson) after Musselman read how the Selection Committee would stress road games this season. Wolf Pack didn’t win the Mountain West tournament, but they did get the league’s first at-large bid since 2015.

St Mary’s apparently refused to schedule better teams, even turning down home/home series. Sunday, they paid for it.

    2) San Diego Padres have a shortstop prospect named Fernando Tatis Jr who they’re very high on; his dad Fernando Tatis is famous for one thing— on April 23, 1999, he hit two grand slams in the same inning, for the Cardinals in Dodger Stadium.

Not only that, but both grand slams were against the same pitcher- Chan Ho Park. Eight RBI in one inning is a record that likely will never be broken.

1— Doug Gottlieb tweeted this Sunday night, about the St Mary’s snub:

“St Mary’s not getting in is the reason Gonzaga will leave the WCC”

Gonzaga is likely to bolt the WCC soon, much like Wichita State left the MVC last summer. But where will the Zags go? Please don’t tell me the Big East.

Gonzaga is located in Spokane, WA, which is roughly 30 miles from the Idaho border. How in the name of Rand McNally can a school 30 miles from Idaho be in the freakin’ Big East???

B]Pastrnak gets hat trick, Bruins rally to stun Hurricanes 6-4
    March 13, 2018
    [/B]
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) David Pastrnak scored three of Boston's five goals in the final 10 minutes for his first career hat trick, and the Bruins stunned the Carolina Hurricanes by rallying for a 6-4 victory Tuesday night.

Matt Grzelcyk, Pastrnak and Danton Heinen scored in a span of 77 seconds to turn a 4-1 Bruins deficit into a 4-all tie. Pastrnak put Boston ahead on a power-play goal with 3:30 left and finished off his hat trick with an empty-net goal with 1:34 remaining.

Brad Marchand had a goal and two assists for the Bruins, who snapped a three-game road losing streak. Tuukka Rask made 29 saves.

Sebastian Aho, Teuvo Teravainen and Justin Williams scored in the second period for Carolina. Brock McGinn added a short-handed goal 51 seconds into the third to make it 4-1, but goalie Cam Ward and the Hurricanes couldn't hold it.

    PREDATORS 3, JETS 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Pekka Rinne made 32 saves and surging Nashville scored two short-handed goals in beating Winnipeg to tie for the top spot in the NHL standings.

Kevin Fiala, Austin Watson and Viktor Arvidsson had the goals for Nashville, which has won 11 of 12.

The Predators reached 100 points in 69 games, the fastest mark in franchise history. The defending Western Conference champions are even with Eastern Conference-leading Tampa Bay - and Nashville has played one fewer game.

Kyle Connor scored for the Jets, losers of three straight. Winnipeg completed a six-game road trip and fell eight points behind the first-place Predators in the Central Division.

    SENATORS 7, LIGHTNING 4

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Mike Hoffman scored two goals and six other Ottawa players had multipoint games as the Senators stopped Tampa Bay's 10-game streak without a regulation loss.

One night earlier, the struggling Senators halted Florida's eight-game home winning streak.

Tom Pyatt, Erik Karlsson, Ryan Dzingel and Marian Gaborik each had a goal and an assist for the Senators. Magnus Paajarvi also scored, and Mike Condon finished with 42 saves

Tampa Bay, sitting atop the NHL standings with 100 points, hadn't lost in regulation since Feb. 17. But the Lightning's lead over Boston in the Atlantic Division was trimmed to four points.

The defeat also spoiled the first career hat trick for J.T. Miller, acquired from the New York Rangers at the Feb. 26 trade deadline. Nikita Kucherov and Steven Stamkos each had three assists.

    AVALANCHE 5, WILD 1

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Nathan MacKinnon scored his 33rd goal of the season, J.T. Compher had his first career two-goal game and Colorado dominated Minnesota again.

Semyon Varlamov made 33 saves for Colorado. Nikita Zadorov and Tyson Jost also scored for the Avalanche, who have won the past three meetings this season by a combined score of 19-4.

Colorado has points in 10 of its past 11 games (6-1-4) and is three points behind Minnesota for third place in the Central Division. The Avalanche pulled into a tie with Dallas (82 points) for the first wild card in the Western Conference.

Mikko Koivu scored his 13th goal of the season for the Wild, who have lost just three times at home in regulation since Nov. 14.

    CANADIENS 4, STARS 2

MONTREAL (AP) - Artturi Lehkonen scored twice and Montreal snapped its five-game losing streak with a victory over Dallas.

Brendan Gallagher and Nikita Scherbak also scored for the Canadiens, who hadn't won since March 2. Alex Galchenyuk had two assists.

Antti Niemi made 36 saves for his fifth win of the season. Niemi hasn't lost in regulation since Feb. 14, going 3-0-3 during that stretch.

Radek Faksa and Jamie Benn scored for Dallas.

The Canadiens were at home for the first time since a 1-3-2 trip.

    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Some prop bets for the NCAA tournament; wins by conference:

    — ACC— 14 wins

    — Big East— 8.5 wins

    — Big X— 8.5 wins

    — #1 seeds— 11.5 wins

    — #2 seeds— 10.5 wins

    — #3 seeds— 8 wins

    **********

    Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

    13) Minnesota Vikings made their decision; they give Kirk Cousins $84M for three years, all fully guaranteed, to be their QB. Cousins has a 26-30-1 career W-L record, 0-1 in playoffs.

    12) Minnesota went 11-3 with Case Keenum at QB LY; Keenum signed with the Broncos on Monday; he threw for 3,547 yards and 22 TD’s last season.

    11) Drew Brees re-signed with the Saints; he turned down $60M guaranteed from someone else (Cardinals? Vikings?) before deciding to stay in New Orleans.

    10) Cardinals gave oft-injured QB Sam Bradford $20 ($15M guaranteed) for one year. As a long-time Ram fan, I endorse the Keenum signing; the Bradford signing? Not so much.

    9) Jets signed Teddy Bridgewater and re-signed Josh McCown, meaning they probably ain’t drafting another quarterback next month.

    8) Gonzaga lost the national title game 71-65 last April, ending an odd run to the Final Four- they were 1-4-1 vs spread in their NCAA tournament games last spring.

    7) Florida made the Elite 8 in each of its last five NCAA tournaments- hard to do that.

    6) Since 2010, Villanova is 5-2 in its first-round games, 1-4 in second round games; the one time they won in second round, they won national title two years ago.

    5) Arkansas is probably glad just to be in a different region than North Carolina this year; last three times the Razorbacks made the NCAA’s, they lost to the Tar Heels in the second round. If they play UNC in this year’s tournament, it’ll be in the Final Four.

    4) Why gambling on NIT/CBI/CIT games can be dicey; USC star Chimezie Metu sat out Trojans’ NIT game Tuesday, for no reason except he didn’t want to get hurt. Not sure that Metu will get picked in the first round of the NBA Draft— he is a junior, so if he got hurt, he could come back to school next year, but it is a free country, and he chose not to play.

Late night update: With Metu sitting on bench, NC-Asheville played its heart out but fell short, losing 103-98 in double OT at USC- they led by six points in overtime.

    3) Virginia loses its best guy off the bench, DeAndre Hunter for the season with a broken wrist.

    2) Radford 71, LIU 61— Radford advances to play Villanova Thursday; no 16-seed has ever beaten a #1-seed. Last nine years, #16-seeds who won the play-in game are 7-11 vs spread in their next game, against a #1-seed.

1— St Bonaventure 65, UCLA 58— Season that started with shoplifting in China ended with an ugly loss on a Tuesday night in Dayton. Bruins turned ball over 20 times (-14), shot 10-30 on arc. Bonnies’ Stocker was doubtful to play, then played all 40:00, scored 26 points- they won despite star Adams going 2-16 from the floor.

TORONTO (AP) James van Riemsdyk had his third career hat trick and Mitch Marner scored the winning goal in a shootout to lift Toronto over the Dallas Stars 6-5 on Wednesday night, extending the Maple Leafs' franchise-record home winning streak to 11 games.

Marner beat Kari Lehtonen in the third round of the shootout, completing Toronto's comebacks from 4-2 and 5-4 deficits in the third period.

Nazem Kadri and Patrick Marleau also scored in regulation for the Maple Leafs. Frederik Andersen allowed three goals on 20 shots before getting lifted just past the game's midway point with an upper-body injury.

Curtis McElhinney came on and stopped 13 shots - including two big saves on Jamie Benn during a power play in overtime - the rest of the way to help Toronto improve to 3-2-2 since star center Auston Matthews went down with a shoulder injury on Feb. 22.

Tyler Bozak, who also scored in the shootout, and Marner each added two assists to keep the Maple Leafs perfect at home since losing to Colorado on Jan. 22.

Tyler Seguin had a goal and two assists, Benn added a goal and an assist, and Radek Faksa, Remi Elie and Brett Ritchie also scored in regulation for Dallas. Lehtonen made 26 stops through overtime.

    RANGERS 4, PENGUINS 3, OT

NEW YORK (AP) - Mika Zibanejad scored the tying goal late in the third period and the winner 2:53 into overtime to rally New York past Pittsburgh.

Chris Kreider had a goal and three assists for his first career four-point game, and Jesper Fast also scored to help the Rangers win their second straight after a three-game skid. Neal Pionk had three assists and Alexandar Georgiev, making his second consecutive start, finished with 37 saves. Georgiev denied Evgeni Malkin on a penalty shot with 11 seconds left in regulation.

On the winner, Zibanejad took a nice pass from Kreider and squeezed a wrist shot past goalie Casey DeSmith for his 100th career goal.

Bryan Rust, Riley Sheahan and Carl Hagelin scored for the Penguins, who lost for just the fifth time in 15 games (10-4-1). DeSmith, filling in for injured starter Matt Murray, stopped 29 shots in his ninth career start.

The Rangers, likely to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2010, are 2-0-1 in their last three games and 5-2-2 in their past nine.

In the Crease - Week 24
    March 14, 2018

    STREAKY TEAMS

Wins and Losses Streak Over/Under Streak

Detroit 0-6-1 past seven games overall Colorado Over 5-1-1 past seven games overall

Florida 8-1-1 past 10 games overall Dallas Under 8-3 past 11 games overall

Nashville 11-0-1 past 12 games overall Tampa Bay Over 16-3-1 past 20 games overall

    Two For Florida

The Ottawa Senators picked their second consecutive road win in Florida on Tuesday, topping the Tampa Bay Lightning and earning moneyline bettors +275. That win came the night after the topped the Florida Panthers +190 on Monday night in Sunrise. In fact, their past three road games, all victories, have netted underdog bettors a cool total of +665, and they're 4-1 over their past five road games to fetch a total of +780. Remember that and maybe take a chance on the Sens when they head to Ohio's capital city on Saturday to battle the Blue Jackets.

    Hit the Century Mark

The defending Western Conference champion Nashville Predators have been on a mission. They are an impressive 11-0-1 across the past 12 outings, racking up their 99th and 100th points in a potential playoff preview against the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday, 3-1. They have been even better on the road than at home, too, picking up at least one point in 12 consecutive away from home since losing in regulation in Vegas on Jan. 2. The Predators are 9-0-2-1 during the impressive road stretch. They look to continue the success in very winnable games at Arizona on Thursday, at Colorado on Friday and at Buffalo on Monday.

    Looking Ahead

    Thursday, March 15

The Maple Leafs head down the QEW and across the Peace Bridge looking to finally get it right in Buffalo. The Sabres dealt te Maple Leafs a 5-3 loss in the most recent meeting last Monday, and the Sabres have won three of the past four matchups overall in this series. Toronto will be playing in the second straight night, too, and they're 3-0-1 across their past four in the second game of a back-to-back set. Each of those games have been on the road, so the Maple Leafs do not get worn out or appear to be frustrated in such situations. The Sabres have been respectable enough lately, going a respectable 5-3-0-1 across the past nine. In the NBA, teams out of contention are often accused of, or openly partake in, tanking. In the NHL, younger teams out of contention keep plugging away and are not easy outs.

Speaking of teams not tanking, the Arizona Coyotes have been impressive over the past five weeks. They're 11-3-1-1 across their past 16 games, as the Coyotes finish up strong and refuse to tank. They have had outstanding goaltending recently, as Antti Raanta was rolling right along until an injury in early March. Darcy Kuemper, acquired from the Kings at the trade deadline, has been impressive being thrust into the No. 1 job, and even Adin Hill was solid on Tuesday. The third-stringer made a start on Tuesday against L.A., picking up his first NHL win. The Predators will be heavily favored on the road in this one, but the Coyotes are no longer a pushover.

    Friday, March 16

The Sharks look to snuff out the Flames in Calgary on a light night in the NHL. San Jose has been a thorn in the side of Calgary so far, winning a pair of 3-2 decisions on Dec. 14 in Alberta, and Dec. 28 in the Bay Area. The 'under' is 5-1-2 in the past eight meetings in this series. Calgary is just 2-3 in their past five home games against San Jose, and four of those outings have resulted in one-goal games. The Flames welcomed All-Star Mike Smith back into the crease on Sunday against the Islanders and he looked a little rusty. He was much better on Tuesday, blanking the Oilers as he rounds back into form.

    Saturday, March 17

It's an Original Six battle Saturday night when the Canadiens visit the Maple Leafs on the corner of Lakeshore Blvd. West and Bay Street. The Maple Leafs won each of the first two meetings this season, both in Montreal, and that ended an ugly losing streak. The Habs entered the 2017-18 season on a 14-game winning streak against the Buds, and Toronto has been dismal on home ice against them. The Leafs are 0-4-1-2 in their past seven attempts against the Canadiens on Air Canada Centre ice, last topping Montreal on home ice back on Jan. 18, 2014.

The Sharks travel to meet the Canucks on Saturday night, and they're hoping it goes better than their last trip to the Pacific Northwest. The Canucks won 4-3 in overtime on Dec. 15, as Jacob Markstrom and the home team bested Martin Jones and the visitors. It was a rare win for Vancouver at home, as they had lost 13 in a row on home ice against San Jose, including the postseason. Before that mid-December win the last time the Canucks beat the Sharks in Vancouver was Jan. 21, 2012 behind an impressive effort by Roberto Luongo in the crease.
