    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Odds to win the Super Bowl next season:

    5-1— New England Patriots

    7-1— Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles

12-1— Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers

    16-1— New Orleans Saints

    18-1— Atlanta Falcons

20-1— Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Rams

    **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

    13) I came down to the casino floor Monday to go to the sports book here at the Westgate, and 3/4 of the casino floor is empty, including the carpet. They’re tearing up the old carpet and laying new carpet— they moved out all the slot machines and pushed the gaming tables over by the theater— it just looks weird. I’m guessing everything will be back in place by the weekend.

    12) Auburn is an 8.5-point favorite over Kentucky tonight; when these teams met LY, Kentucky was a 24-point favorite. Bruce Pearl has to get lot of votes for national Coach of the Year.

    11) Over the last six seasons, Kentucky has been a road underdog in ten SEC games; would you be surprised to know that they’re 1-8-1 against the spread in those games?

    10) Georgetown 87, Butler 83— 11-point underdog Hoyas are 5-9 in the Big East after playing the easiest pre-conference schedule in the country. When Patrick Ewing pulled his team out of the PK80 tournament in November, it was assumed that the talent there was so awful that they didn’t want to get clobbered early in Ewing’s first season as a head coach.

Georgetown’s kids play very hard and fact is, they’re better than most people thought they would be. Moving on, recruiting will be a huge question for Ewing, since he’s never done it before.

    9) Persistence is important in sports and in life. Golfer Ted Potter Jr won the Pebble Beach tournament Sunday and earned $1,506,517 for his second career win.

When Potter was first starting out as a pro golfer, he entered 24 events on the web.com Tour, and he missed the cut in all 24 tournaments. Can you imagine how awful that must have been, not to mention how expensive? But Potter stuck it out, and now he is a 2-time Tour winner.

    8) Pepperdine fired basketball coach Marty Wilson; in seven years in Malibu, the Waves are 42-76 in WCC games under Wilson, 1-13 this year. Pepperdine went 10-8 in league two and also three years ago, but then they fell off the cliff.

This means that in a league dominated by Gonzaga/St Mary’s, with BYU a steady third, LMU coach Mike Dunlap is the 4th-longest tenured coach in the WCC and he is 21-47 in WCC games. Five of the ten WCC teams have fired their coach in the last three years- Pacific’s coach retired.

    7) Looks like the Los Angeles Angels will use a 6-man pitching rotation, which is what teams in Japan do (teams generally have Monday off in Japan). Halos spent a ton of money when they signed Shohei Ohtani, and he is used to pitching once a week. This will be an interesting thing to follow— if it works for them, you know more teams will do it.

    6) Isaiah Thomas is in his 7th year in the NBA and he is already on his fifth team; what does that tell you? He is a career 19 ppg scorer. I’m guessing he may not be America’s best teammate.

    5) Arizona Cardinals gave GM Steve Keim a 4-year contract extension; now he has to get together with his new coach and figure out who the Cardinals’ QB will be going forward.

    4) Nebraska 70, Maryland 66— Cornhuskers have 20 wins for the first time since 1993.

    3) Rhode Island 85, Richmond 67— Rams won their 16th straight game, but EC Matthews hurt his left knee and was dragged off the court. URI seemed hopeful that the injury isn’t serious- they went 4-2 when Matthews broke his wrist earlier this season.

    2) What in God’s name is former major league pitcher Esteban Loaiza thinking? The guy made over $43M in his playing career and now he gets busted with 44 pounds of cocaine, which is worth $500,000? Hard to have any sympathy for the guy.

    1) If you want someone else to hold your money for the next 50 weeks, you can bet Super Bowl LIII today; AFC is a 1-point favorite, with a total of 52. Game is in Atlanta’s domed stadium.

In the Crease - Week 20
    February 14, 2018

    STREAKY TEAMS

Wins and Losses Streak Over/Under Streak

Boston 6-1 past seven games Carolina Under 7-1 past eight games

N.Y. Islanders 2-6 past eight games Los Angeles Over 4-1 past five games

Toronto 8-1 past nine games New Jersey Over 4-1 past five games

    Working Overtime

The Nashville Predators topped the St. Louis Blues by a 4-3 score in overtime on Tuesday night behind Pekka Rinne. It was the fifth consecutive game for Nashville where a winner was not decided in regulation. The Predators have won two games in overtime, they have lost once in overtime, and they have split a pair of shootouts during the span. Nashville might not have to work so hard if they could only make their power play work. Over the past five outings they have failed to score on the man advantage. They'll look to avoid another overtime or shootout session when they play host to the Calgary Flames on Thursday night.

    Road Weary

The Tampa Bay Lightning are having a difficult time lately on the road. They suffered a 5-3 loss at Buffalo on Tuesday night, dropping back-to-back games in Western New York and at Toronto on Monday night. It is the first time all season that the NHL's points leader (79) has dropped three games in a row on the road. They're still a rather impressive 19-11-2 away from the Suncoast this season, and they're 19-5-1 in 25 games at home. The Lightning are still the only team in the league with more than 200 total goals this season, and they're No. 2 in goal differential at plus-50. They're back home on Thursday against the Detroit Red Wings, and Saturday against the New Jersey Devils, before heading out on a three-game road trip starting in Washington next Tuesday.

    Looking Ahead

    Wednesday, February 14

The Columbus Blue Jackets roll into Air Canada Centre looking to cool off the red-hot Toronto Maple Leafs. The Jackets won on Tuesday night at N.Y. Islanders by a 4-1 score to win for the second consecutive outing after an 0-4-1 skid. Columbus is still just 1-6 across their past seven against teams with a winning overall mark. The Maple Leafs have won four in a row, and five straight at Air Canada Centre. And, for what it's worth, they're 7-3 across their past 10 games on Wednesday. They're also 4-1 in the past five outings while facing an opponent with an overall winning record.

The Montreal Canadiens roll into the Mile High City to take the Colorado Avalanche. The road hasn't been terribly friendly to the Habs lately, as they're 1-8 in their past nine games away from Quebec. They're also just 8-21 across their past 29 against teams with a winning record, while posting a dismal 10-27 record in their past 37 tries against Central Division foes. For Colorado, they're 10-1 over their past 11 games at home while posting an impressive 7-2 mark in their past nine against Eastern Conference clubs. Over the years the Habs haven't had great success against the Avs, especially in Denver, going 2-8 in their past 10 visits to the Mile High City. The home team has won four straight in this series.

    Thursday, February 15

The Carolina Hurricanes head to Newark to battle the New Jersey Devils in a very important game in the Eastern Conference, as both teams jockey for a wild-card spot. After Tuesday's play, the Hurricanes were eighth in the East with 63 points with 25 regular-season games remaining. The Devils were just ahead of them with 64 points, sitting in seventh place, with 26 games remaining. This is the first of four meetings this season, including three meetings between now and March 2. Last season it was the Devils winning three of the four matchups, while Carolina won the most recent battle in Newark on March 25 behind former goalie Eddie Lack.

The Vancouver Canucks meet the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center in the final game on the Thursday night schedule. The Sharks have 68 points while sitting in second place in the Pacific Division, and the Canucks are second-to-last with just 50 points. However, each of the past two games have been decided in overtime. The Sharks won 5-4 in overtime on home ice in the most recent meeting on Dec. 21, while the Canucks were victorious in the extra session on Dec. 15 by a 4-3 score. The first meeting went to San Jose by a 5-0 count on Nov. 11. The 'under' has hit in six of the past eight games for the Sharks, although the 'over' has hit in each of their past two vs. the Canucks.

    Friday, February 16

It's a light slate on Friday, with just four games. However, the Islanders and Hurricanes have an important battle on tap Friday at PNC Arena in Raleigh. Both teams protected home ice in the previous two meetings, with the Hurricanes doubling up Jaroslav Halak and the Isles by a 4-2 score on Nov. 19 in the most recent battle, while the Islanders pounded Scott Darling and the Canes by a 6-4 count on Nov. 16. The 'over' is 6-3-1 in the past 10 meetings between these two, including 1-0-1 this season.

The Blues and Stars meet for the fourth time this season. The home team has won the previous three battles, including a 4-2 win by the Stars on home ice in the most recent meeting on Dec. 29. In fact, the home team is 6-1 in the past seven regular season meetings. Dallas had been humming right along at home until a shocking 6-0 loss at home to the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday, so they'll be champing at the bit to get back on track. That loss snapped a five-game winning streak, including three in a row at home.

    Saturday, February 17

The East Coast road odyssey for the Los Angeles Kings continues on to Western New York where they'll battle the Buffalo Sabres. It hasn't been a great time away from La La Land for the Kings lately, as they were crowned 7-3 in Raleigh by the Hurricanes on Tuesday night, and that came on the heels of a 4-3 loss at Tampa Bay last Saturday. The Kings have dropped three of their past four away from home, and they are a dismal 3-6 while L.A. has been outscored 30-20.

The Maple Leafs and Penguins square off in an important Eastern Conference battle on Saturday night in the Steel City. After years of being dominated by the Pens, the Leafs are making some inroads. They won the only previous meeting this season, 4-3, back in the Steel City on Dec. 9. In fact, the Leafs have won three in a row in this series. The Penguins would like to change that, and they hope to maintain their dominance at home. They're riding an nine-game winning streak on home ice dating back to Jan. 4 when the Hurricanes shut them out 4-0. Pittsburgh is averaging a gaudy 5.22 goals per game during the impressive stretch at home. Toronto entered the week with four victories over their past five on the road.

    Thursday’s 6-pack

Odds to win the Super Bowl next season:

    100-1— Bears, Jets, Browns

80-1— Bengals, Bills, Dolphins, Redskins, Giants, Cardinals

    60-1— Lions, Buccaneers

    40-1— Colts, Titans, Ravens

    30-1— Panthers

    25-1— Chiefs, Chargers, 49ers, Seahawks

Quote of the Day (apparently this is Steve Kerr quote week)

“Nothing has been done. It doesn’t seem to matter to our government that children are being shot to death day after day in schools. It doesn’t matter that people are being shot at a concert, in a movie theater. It’s not enough, apparently, to move our leadership, our government, people that are running this country, to actually do anything. That’s demoralizing.”
Steve Kerr, whose father was assassinated in Lebanon in 1984

    Thursday’s quiz

If you drive straight north from New York City thru upstate New York until you get to Canada, which Canadian province would you be in when you get there?

    Wednesday’s quiz

Nets, Pacers, Spurs, Nuggets are the four NBA teams used to play in the ABA.

    Tuesday’s quiz

Salem is the capital of Oregon.

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

    13) 17 innocent people died Wednesday in Florida, in a school shooting. In this country so far in 2018, there have been 18 school shootings in 35 school days; something needs to be done about crazy people having assault rifles, which is what this lunatic had.

    12) 50 years ago Wednesday was the first NBA game in the new Madison Square Garden in NYC; Knicks beat the San Diego Rockets 114-102. San Diego had a sub named Pat Riley who scored a basket off the bench; Knicks had a player named Phil Jackson score 14 points for them— wonder whatever happened to those two guys?

    11) Wizards 118, Knicks 113— Washington trailed by 27 with 2:41 left in the first half, by 21 at the half, but they rallied for an unlikely win. Knicks have now lost eight games in a row.

    10) Providence 76, Villanova 71— Wildcats lost for the second time in their last three games.

    9) Former Florida coach Jim McElwain is the new offensive coordinator at Michigan.

    8) Last four years, Oregon is 22-0 SU in Pac-12 regular season games, from Valentine’s Day until the end of the regular season.

    7) North Texas hosts Western Kentucky in a Conference USA game tonight; Mean Green is 7-5 in C-USA this year, after being 30-60 the last five years. All 12 of North Texas’ conference games this season have been decided by seven or fewer points.

    6) Scary car accident in Los Angeles Tuesday night, where a Ferrari clipped a SUV while apparently going very fast; the driver of the Ferrari died when the car overturned- his passenger was pro golfer Bill Haas, who is in serious but stable condition in the hospital. Actor Luke Wilson was driving the SUV; a woman passenger in one of the cars was injured.

    5) If/when the Raiders cut Sebastian Janikowski in the next few days, Tom Brady would be the only NFL player drafted before 2003 who is still with the team that drafted him.

    4) 16 of 30 NBA teams have a guy from Duke; 15 of 30 have a guy from Kentucky.

    3) Last college player to shoot 40%+ from the arc and average 10+ rebounds a game was Kevin Durant; North Carolina’s Luke Maye has a chance to do that this season.

    2) Auburn has trailed by double figures in eight games this season; they’re 5-3 in those games.

    1) RIP Tito Francona, Terry Francona’s dad, who passed away at age 84. Tito Francona played in the majors for 15 years for nine teams, hitting .272 with a .343 on-base %age.

    Best and Worst Bets
    February 15, 2018

    BET ON THESE TEAMS...

I say this every year, but there’s no better sport to bet on in order to fill that cavernous NFL void than the NHL. It’s a notoriously volatile market that pays out well if you know where to look. Generally speaking, hockey is one of those sports where you can easily ride out streaking teams. So which ones are raiding the win column? That might not be the right question. What you should be asking is which teams are about to heat up.

TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS (9-1 SU IN LAST 10 GAMES)

The upstart Leafs were in an ugly slump through almost all of January but have turned things around in a mighty way. A dazzling 6-3 win over Columbus was highlighted by Kadri notching five points in a true team effort. Of course, Freddy Anderson had to turn away 54 shots because it’s Toronto, he’s been coming up huge as of late.

While the Maple Leafs are getting absolutely murdered on the puckline because of a tragically poor defence that allows 34.1 shots against per game (29th), this team is so good offensively that they’re still a great take on the moneyline. Auston Matthews leads the team with 47 points and an absurdly high plus-minus of 24, while goalie Freddie Anderson is in a bit of a rhythm right now.

Toronto also has a pretty favorable schedule in the next week or so, and while they have a bit of trouble on the road, they’re paying out at a rate of 65.5 percent when hosting. There’s no doubt that this young team will take its lumps, but when they’re on point, you have to bet them. And if rumors are true and Rick Nash arrives in town to bolster their second line, the rest of the Eastern Conference is in deep trouble.

Next Games: at Pittsburgh (2/17), at Detroit (2/18), vs. Florida (2/20), vs. NYI (2/22), vs. Boston (2/24)

LOS ANGELES KINGS (+231 ON THE MONEYLINE THIS SEASON)

The Kings made waves by somehow shipping Marion Gaborik’s seemingly immovable contract out of town by taking on another salary that was thought to be anchored deep. Dion Phaneuf is coming to Hollywood! Everyone loves ragging on him, but Phaneuf is a perfect gap filler for what this team needs. The Kings rely heavily on a thick blue line that’s already defended by the likes of Drew Doughty. Shoring up the second unit will be a synch for Phaneuf, who has regressed slightly but is still a minutes monster and a big threat to rip one from distance.

All in all, I love this move for Los Angeles. Their offence is in a hodling pattern these days and the team has gone just 6-4 SU in the last 10 games, but that should change once Phaneuf suits up as early as this Thursday. This is a buy-low team that has an uphill climb on the road where they’ll have some strong value. If you ride them, you’ll only need two wins on the road for them to payout handsomely, and the first one could be a doozy if they score the upset.

Their schedule over the next week is absolutely gettable.

Next Games: at Pittsburgh (2/15), at Buffalo (2/17), at Chicago (2/19), at Winnipeg (2/20), vs. Dallas (2/22)

COLORADO AVALANCHE (+1242 ON THE MONEYLINE THIS SEASON)

Colorado is good because they’re deep ad they play to their strengths. There’s no denying that the Avalanche are a tasty treat for bettors, and though the oddsmakers have caught up, and things have been dicey on the road for this squad, they have a delectable schedule coming up.

What the Avs do well is get quality shots and kill penalties well. They’re 3rd in the league when giving the man advantage and have given up on trying to be good at face-offs by skating their young hearts out. There’s a lot to love about how hard these guys work, and that can be the big difference night in and night out in NHL betting.

They be out of the playoffs for now, but a strong run against a soft schedule this week can rectify that. These guys have been making the oddsmaker pay all year long. Bet away and bet often.

Next Games: at Winnipeg (2/16), vs. Edmonton (2/18), at Vancouver (2/20), at Edmonton (2/22) vs. Calgary (2/24)

    BET AGAINST THESE TEAMS…

It’s bad for these guys and it’s just getting worse.

MONTREAL CANADIENS (3-7 SU IN LAST 10 GAMES)

The Canadians are simply no good right now. Even their self righcheous fans are keeping quiet during the season. That’s when you know it’s truly bad. With the league’s second-worst defence (2.5 goals per game), the Canadiens are in the gutter against both the puckline and the moneyline. There’s some sneak value at home, but it’s impossible to predict which games they’re going to show up in. If you want to make a quick buck, then just bet against Montreal. That’s been one of the best bets in the NHL all year.

ANAHEIM DUCKS (-367 on the MONEYLINE THIS SEASON)

Everyone who grew up in any other decade prior to the turn of the century has a soft spot for Anaheim because of those goofy movies. And while the on ice product that this franchise has put together certainly deserves some attention, the Ducks are just way too erratic overall as they continue to search for some fresh scoring. They currently rank 23rd in goals for with just 2.7 per game, despite boasting some of the most capable lamp lighters in the NHL. A lot of it is because nobody’s scared of their blue line. They just don’t threaten the crease with booming power or any precision.

    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Odds to win the National League this season:

    9-4— Los Angeles Dodgers

    3-1— Washington Nationals

    7-2— Chicago Cubs

    9-1— St Louis Cardinals

    15-1— Mets-Arizona-Milwaukee-Rockies-Giants

    50-1— Pittsburgh, Philadelphia

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff on a winter day

    13) Arizona 77, Arizona State 70— Pretty intense rivalry game. An Arizona male cheerleader was tossed by the refs for taunting an ASU player.

Arizona coach Sean Miller sweated thru his suit jacket. Sweating thru your dress shirt is one thing, but if you sweat so much it soaks thru your suitcoat too, thats some serious stress.

Solid win for the Wildcats; ASU is now 7-7 and in 7th place in the Pac-12.

    12) USC 72, Oregon 70— Trojans survived 5-12 shooting on foul line and snapped a 3-game skid, scoring on an alley-oop pass for the game-winner with 0:00.6 left.

    11) Wichita State 93, Temple 86— Owls led 56-42 at the half, but scored only 30 points in the second half, as their 5-game win streak ended. Temple beat the Shockers in Philly, so Wichita might want to avoid the Owls in the A-14 tournament.

    10) Houston 67, Cincinnati 62— Bearcats’ first loss since December 9 to Florida; I’m guessing on Selection Sunday, someone will interview a smiling Kelvin Sampson after his Cougars make the Field of 68— this win should get them in.

    9) Pacers-Pelicans NBA game that was postponed last week because of a leaky roof in New Orleans has been rescheduled for March 21.

    8) Seattle’s new 1B Ryon Healy has a real injury; he had an operation to have bone spurs taken out of his hand— he’ll be out 4-6 weeks.

    7) Orioles signed pitcher Andrew Cashner for two years, $16M; he ain’t going to like the short dimensions at Camden Yards.

    6) Wisconsin 57, Purdue 53— Badgers retired Frank Kaminsky’s number 44, and then went out and handed Purdue its third loss in a row. First half of this game was amazingly ugly.

    5) Denver 134, Milwaukee 123— Nikola Jokic had a triple-double….in the first half!!!

    4) Penn State 79, Ohio State 56— Nittany Lions were up 24 at the half. Impressive.

    3) Bengals’ backup QB AJ McCarron won a grievance with the league, will become an unrestricted free agent next month, which means he’ll be really rich fairly soon.

    2) Football players must hate baseball; Dodger pitcher Alex Wood “tweaked his ankle during calisthenics” Thursday, so he’ll be out a few days. Someone in the NFL “tweaks his ankle” and it doesn’t exactly make the injury report. Plus all baseball contracts are guaranteed.

I’m 58 years old; there’s a fair-to-midland chance I could get thru calisthenics without tweaking my ankle. As long as calisthenics didn’t include any running

    1) Minnesota Timberwolves’ starting five players are all in the top 38 in the NBA in minutes played, which is part of why Minnesota is so improved this year (36-25).
