    Tuesday’s 6-pack

    — Stanford 77, USC 76— This game Sunday night ended when a kid on Stanford drained a half-court shot at the buzzer. It is a clip worth finding on the Interweb- quite an ending.

    — Raptors 114, Nets 113 OT— Toronto is a very quiet 28-10.

    — Vegas Golden Knights, an NHL expansion team, are 18-2-1 at home.

    — Dustin Johnson almost got a hole-in-one on a 433-yard, par-4 hole Sunday

    — Duquesne is a surprising 3-0 in Atlantic 14, with new coach Keith Dambrot, who was Lebron James’ high school coach.

    — Minnesota 127, Cleveland 99— Lebron was a career-worst minus-39.

    *************************

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

    13) Alabama 26, Georgia 23 OT— Freshman QB Tua Tagovailoa was 35-53 passing this whole season, before this game. Alabama put him in to start second half, trailing 13-0- they looked dead, but Tagovailoa was 14-24/166 with three TD’s, including the game-winner in OT, as Alabama wins another national title, in highly dramatic fashion.

Jalen Hurts is 25-2 as Alabama’s QB, but he’ll never start another game— will he transfer?

    12) Watching the ESPN Film Room on ESPN News, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said: “In bowl games, officials are going to let ‘em play a little more. So if you have to hold, hold.” Kevin Sumlin agreed and said same thing also goes for defensive backs in pass coverage.

    11) Gundy made another point just before halftime, saying how important it is for teams to have something positive happen right before the half. “It really helps the mood in the locker room at halftime.” Halftimes are lot longer in college ball than the NFL.

    10) Kevin Sumlin got fired by Texas A&M after this season; if he wants to go on TV next year, he will be very good. Good natured guy, gets points across quickly.

    9) Gundy and Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald agreed that their teams are better off with their coordinators calling plays, rather than the head coach, who has to manage the administrative aspects of the program. They were saying playcallers study film “for eight hours a day”.

    8) 6.5 years ago, Georgia QB Jake Fromm played in the Little League World Series; now he was a QB in the national championship game as a freshman in college.

    7) A gambler at South Point Casino in Las Vegas risked $557,500 to win $300,000, taking Alabama on the money line. No pointspread. Yikes.

I can’t even imagine what it must be like watching a game with half a million bucks riding on it. Especially this game!!!

    6) Portent of the future? National anthem was played with Donald Trump on the field, but the players were in the locker room. Thats smart, avoiding any potential political displays or any other controversies that would take away from the game.

    5) If Alabama played 14-0 Central Florida on a neutral field, they’d be a 13-point favorite.

    4) In divisional round of NFL playoffs, #1-seeds are 16-5 against #6 seeds- the #6-seed won a road game the previous week, while the #1-seed had a bye.

    3) When a 2-seed plays a 3-seed in this round, the 2-seed is 26-8- the bye really does help.

    2) Since 2001, when the Patriots play at home in this round of playoffs, they’re 5-4-2 vs spread.

    1) Chicago Bears hired Chiefs’ OC Matt Nagy as their new head coach. Nagy played six years in the Arena League— he joins Jay Gruden as former AFL QB’s who are now NFL head coaches.

NHL Betting Cheat Sheet and Odds: Caps back on top in the Metropolitan
    Monty Andrews

The Washington Capitals are once again masters of the Metropolitan Division, as they put their four-game winning streak on the line Tuesday night against the visiting Vancouver Canucks.

    The Only Game in Town

Hockey bettors might go a bit crazy this week, with just 13 total games on the schedule between Monday and Thursday. The week kicks off with a one-game ledger, as the Toronto Maple Leafs host the Columbus Blue Jackets on a night where most of the sports world will be fixated on the college football national championship game. But don't sleep on this one, with plenty of interesting trends to pursue. Most notably: The Maple Leafs have a significant home edge in this one; they've won five of their past six games at Air Canada Centre while the visiting Blue Jackets have dropped six of their previous seven away from Columbus.

    Winning Washington

The Washington Capitals are once again masters of the Metropolitan Division, as they put their four-game winning streak on the line Tuesday night against the visiting Vancouver Canucks. The Capitals have used their recent hot stretch, combined with the New Jersey Devils' five-game winless skid, to open up a three-game edge atop the division coming into the week - and oddsmakers believe they'll stay there, making them the prohibitive +220 favorite on Bet365 to finish atop the Metropolitan by season's end. Things are decidedly bleaker for the Canucks, who come into this one having dropped four in a row.

    Unlikely Central Cellar Dwellers

The Minnesota Wild and Chicago Blackhawks were expected to contend for the Central Division title coming into the season - but as we reach the unofficial first half of the campaign, neither team looks like a division champion as they square off Wednesday night at United Center. Both teams are on the periphery of the Western Conference playoff picture and occupy the bottom two spots in the division; the Wild own a one-point edge over Chicago, but the Blackhawks have a game in hand. Minnesota is installed at +1,300 on Bet365 to claim the Central title, while the Blackhawks find themselves at +1,700 as of Monday.

    Injury Updates

    * The New York Rangers will have to do without forward Chris Kreider for a while longer as he deals with a blood clot in his arm and a required rib resection. The Rangers are 11-4-1 SU in games in which Kreider has recorded at least one point.

    * Winnipeg Jets forward Mark Scheifele is expected to be out another six weeks with an upper-body injury, but his team appears to be doing just fine without him. The Jets are 4-0-1 since Scheifele went down, scoring four or more goals four times in that span.

    * The Colorado Avalanche are in a similar situation, having gone 5-1-0 since losing defensive star Tyson Barrie to a broken hand. Barrie, who is expected to be out another six weeks, is enjoying a sensational season with 27 points through 34 games.

    Player News

    * Looking for a model of consistency? Look no further than league scoring leader Nikita Kucherov of the Tampa Bay Lighting, who has been held without a point just seven times in 42 games. The Lightning are 3-3-1 SU in those seven contests.

    * Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan McKinnon has surged into second place in the league scoring race with 52 points; 12 of those have come in his last five games. the Avs are 18-7-2 SU in games in which McKinnon hits the scoresheet.

    * It has been nearly a month since Marc-Andre Fleury returned to action, and the Vegas Golden Knights netminder has been simply outstanding in that span. Fleury is 6-1-1 in eight starts, recording two shutouts and allowing more than two goals just once.

    Stanley Cup Futures

    * There's the Tampa Bay Lightning - and then there's everyone else. Bet365 has the East-leading Lightning as the runaway favorites to win their second Stanley Cup championship, installing them at +575 heading into the week.

    * The slumping Devils have seen their Stanley Cup prospects take a nosedive, leaving them with the fifth-best odds in the East entering Monday. Bet365 has New Jersey at +1,400, behind Tampa, Washington, Boston and Toronto.

    * Don't look now, but the Colorado Avalanche are paying out a lot less to end their Stanley Cup drought than they were earlier in the season. Colorado is now listed at +2,500 to win its first NHL championship since 2001.

    Over/Under Trends

    * As good a show as Vegas puts on at home (18-2-1 SU), the expansion Golden Knights have been plenty entertaining away from Sin City, as well. Vegas is 12-7-1 O/U through 20 road games, and 23-16-2 O/U so far this season.

    * The Honda Center hasn't seen much red-light action this season, with the Anaheim Ducks having gone 6-14-1 O/U through their first 21 home contests. The Ducks rank 27th in home goals per game (2.62) and 14th in goals against (2.62).

    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

    — Kansas 83, Iowa State 78— 41.7% of Jayhawks’ shots are 3’s, way up from previous years.

    — Purdue 70, Michigan 69— Wolverines didn’t score over last 2:51 of game.

    — Georgetown 69, St John’s 66— Johnnies are now 0-5 in the Big East.

    — West Virginia 57, Baylor 54— WVU won despite shooting 9-36 INSIDE the arc.

    — Kentucky 74, Texas A&M 73— Aggies were 14-24 on foul line, are 0-4 in SEC

    — Boise State 70, Fresno State 64— Are Broncos the best team in Mountain West?

    **********

    Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

    13) Monday night was a COLLEGE football game, not the NFL. ESPN sucks for interviewing Jalen Hurts after the game- they were probably hoping he would pout, but the kid is all class.

Have you ever even seen an NFL QB who was benched interviewed after a game when his sub came in and won the game? Ever? What was the point?

    12) Second half of the national title game is played with two freshman QB’s; that defies logic.

    11) Four of the last five national champs in college football trailed by 10+ points in 4th quarter of the championship game.

    10) Kudos to the Clippers’ DeAndre Jordan, who is 26 for his last 33 on the foul line. Working on your game pays off— teams will stop fouling him on purpose soon.

    9) Clippers’ Lou Williams is #2 in NBA in 4th quarter scoring; Clippers are his 5th team in the last five years. I remember seeing him play AAU ball in Orlando back when I used to go down there every July to see games. Seems like long time ago but it was 2004, not that long ago.

    8) Patriots could’ve had the #4 pick in April’s draft if they had traded Jimmy Garoppolo to the Browns instead of San Francisco. Cleveland was willing to trade Houston’s pick to get a QB, but New England obviously wanted to ship him out of the AFC, and in fairness, Houston was 3-4 at the time of the trade- no one knew the pick wound wind up being #4.

    7) Someone voted Duke 20th in the college basketball poll this week; I’d be curious who he thinks the 19 teams are who are better than Duke.

    6) Football coaching carousel:
    — Former Tennessee coach Derek Dooley is the new OC at Missouri
    — Teryl Austin is still a defensive coordinator, only now in Cincinnati, not Detroit
    — Rams’ QB coach Greg Olson is the Oakland Raiders’ new OC- he gets a 4-year deal.
    — Carolina Panthers fired OC Mike Shula, QB coach Ken Dorsey

    5) Unusual Fact of the Day: 1972 Miami Dolphins went 17-0, but starting QB Bob Greise started only six of the 17 games, and only one playoff game- the Super Bowl. When Miami won 14-7 in the Super Bowl, Greise threw only 11 passes the whole game. Football was different then. Backup QB for Miami back then was Earl Morrall, who also started Super Bowl III for the Colts.

    4) Toronto Blue Jays were the oldest team in the major leagues last season.

    3) Missouri football gets important, good news; QB Drew Lock will be back next season. He is very good.

    2) Alabama’s football coaches banked a total of $1.27M in bonuses for winning the national title; Nick Saban gets a $100K bonus, but DC Jeremy Pruitt got the biggest one- $234K. Pruitt is now off to be the new head coach at Tennessee.

    1) One of the interesting things about our country is how different sports are lot more popular in various areas of the country; New York ranked #52 out of 56 markets in ratings for the college football national title game Monday night. No one on NYC talk radio talks about college football recruiting, ever, not even on Signing Day.

You watch the Paul Finebaum Show on SEC Network and people in the south are discussing Ole Miss’ nickel defense on weekday afternoons in April. I’m not judging, just noting the diversity our country has makes it a more interesting place.

Ryan Suter, Devan Dubnyk help Wild beat Blackhawks 2-1
    January 10, 2018

CHICAGO (AP) Ryan Suter gave Minnesota the lead on a 4-on-4 early in the third period, Devan Dubnyk made 34 saves and the Wild held off the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1 on Wednesday night to end a two-game slide.

Jonas Brodin scored in the second period for Minnesota (23-17-4). The Wild pulled two points ahead of Chicago (21-16-6) in the tight Central Division and tussle for playoff spots in the Western Conference.

Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook, a healthy scratch in Chicago's 8-2 win in Ottawa on Tuesday night, was back in the lineup and celebrated with his first goal since opening night.

Chicago's Anton Forsberg made 25 saves in his third straight start.

The Blackhawks acquired winger Anthony Duclair and defenseman Adam Clendening from Arizona before the game in a trade for right wing Richard Panik and minor league forward Laurent Dauphin.

    SENATORS 4, MAPLE LEAFS 3

TORONTO (AP) - Tom Pyatt broke a tie with 3:05 left and Ottawa beat Toronto in the final game for both teams before their bye weeks.

Pyatt took a feed from Matt Duchene on a 3-on-1 - after Toronto defenseman Morgan Rielly got caught pinching at Ottawa's blue line - and beat Frederik Andersen high to the blocker side.

Thomas Chabot, Mike Hoffman and Gabriel Dumont also scored to help the Senators rebound from an 8-2 home loss to Chicago on Tuesday night. Craig Anderson made 44 saves after being pulled against the Blackhawks. Andreas Borgman, James van Riemsdyk and Rielly scored for Toronto.

In the Crease - Week 15
    January 10, 2018

    STREAKY TEAMS

Wins and Losses Streak Over/Under Streak

Boston 8-2 past 10 games overall

Anaheim Under 12-3 past 15 games overall

Vancouver 2-13 past 15 games overall

Montreal Under 7-1 past eight games overall

Washington 5-0 past five games overall

N.Y. Islanders Over 9-2-2 past 13 games overall

    Beantown Profits
The Boston Bruins are on quite the roll lately, picking up at least one point in 11 consecutive games, going 8-0-2-1 during the impressive span. They last lost in regulation on Dec. 14 against the nemesis Washington Capitals. They also fell to the Caps 4-3 in a shootout on Dec. 28. The good news is that the B's do not have to face the Caps again this season. The offense has kicked into high gear for Boston, making bettors a lot of money in the process. Boston is averaging 4.5 goals per game over the past 10 games, so it's no surprise the 'over' is 4-1-1 over the past six outings.

    Single Digits

The Tampa Bay Lightning continue to show the way with 65 points, leading the NHL in the quest for the President's Trophy at roughly the halfway mark. Through 43 games they're 31-9-1-2, and they're the only team in the league yet to experience their 10th loss of the season. The Lightning also lead the league with an impressive plus-53 goal differential, while posting a sparkling 17-3-1 record at home. Only the expansion Vegas Golden Knights have had a better record (18-2-1) at home so far this season. They have rattled off three straight 'over' results, too, while averaging 3.4 goals per game over the past 10 contests.

    Looking Ahead

The Blackhawks host the Wild in the Windy City and they're slight favorites. Minnesota suffered a 3-2 setback in overtime against the visiting Flames with their backup goaltender Alex Stalock in between the pipes. They will have Devan Dubnyk in the blue ice against Jeff Glass in a matchup that appears to have the visitors. Of course, Chicago's offense came alive with eight goals in Ottawa on Tuesday night. Something's gotta give in this one, as neither team has been very good against the number lately. Minnesota is 3-15 in their past 18 road games against a team with a winning home record, and 0-4 in their past four on no days of rest. Chicago is 1-6 in their past seven in the second end of a back-to-back situation, and they're 7-18 in their past 25 against teams with a winning record. However, they have won five of the past six at United Center.

The Hurricanes and Capitals will do battle in another light night on the frozen surface. Carolina entered play Wednesday just one point out of the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. They're 1-4 in their past five overall, and 0-4 in their past four tries against teams with a winning record. For whatever reason they have shined with one day of rest, going 4-1 in their past five. And they're 11-5 in their past 16 games on a Thursday, for what that's worth.

The Caps have rattled off victories in 16 of their past 21 games overall, while posting an impressive 41-12 record in the past 53 outings at home. Like Carolina, the Caps have had success on Thursdays, going 37-16 in their past 53 on the day. More importantly, they're 81-37 in their past 118 against a team with a losing record. They usually take care of the lesser teams when called upon. They've taken care of the Hurricanes, too, going 6-0 in their past six home meetings with Carolina, and 4-0 in the past four meetings overall. The home team has won eight of the past 11 in this series. The 'over' is 4-0-1 in the past five meetings, too. The teams will also meet in the second end of a home-and-home series on Friday in Raleigh, too.

The Blackhawks will host the Jets, and Winnipeg will be looking for revenge after a rare 5-1 loss at MTS Centre back on Dec. 14. The Jets are 16-3-1 in 20 home games this season, and their worst loss came at the hands of the 'Hawks. Chicago entered play on Wednesday winning five of their past six home games, although they're just 9-21 in their past 30 games against Western Conference teams. The Jets have been rolling up the offense lately, going for four or more goals in each of their past three outings, and six of the past seven. Winnipeg is averaging 3.9 goals per game over the past 10 contests, while Chicago has erupted for 28 goals over their past six entering play Wednesday.

The Oilers and Coyotes will do battle in the desert on Friday night with Arizona looking for revenge. Edmonton won 3-2 in overtime against Arizona in the most recent meeting on Nov. 28 as Cam Talbot edged out Scott Wedgewood. The 'Yotes have dropped four in a row against the Oil dating back to a 2-1 win on Nov. 27 in Edmonton. That victory was part of a home-and-home sweep for the Coyotes, so it hasn't been that long since they've had success against the Oilers. Five of the past six meetings in this series have hit the 'under'.

The Islanders and Rangers renew their rivalry at Madison Square Garden in matinee action. New York can focus squarely on hockey, too, as neither of their football teams came close to qualifying for the NFL postseason. The Rangers dropped a 4-3 decision in a shootout back on Oct. 19 at home against the Islanders, and they have dropped four in a row against their Gotham rivals dating back to a 5-3 win by the Blueshirts in the regular season opener on Oct. 13, 2016. These games have been high scoring lately, too, with the 'over' going 5-1-1 in the past seven meetings.

It's always a good time when the Ducks and Kings renew their Southern California rivalry. The first two battles this season have been amazing, with L.A. winning 2-1 in a shootout on Nov. 25 at Staples Center, and 4-3 in overtime at Honda Center back on Nov. 7. Five of the past six in this series, and seven of the past nine meetings, have resulted in one-goal games. We rarely see a blowout when these teams sharpen the skates and square off with one another. L.A. hasn't won at home in regulation since Dec. 5, a five-game span which has seen them go 3-1-1, with all three victories and one loss coming in overtime.
