NHL notebook: Bruins' Backes to have colon surgery
    November 1, 2017

Boston Bruins forward David Backes will undergo surgery to remove a portion of his colon with the expected recovery time being about eight weeks, the team announced Wednesday.

Backes suffers from diverticulitis, a digestive-system ailment. He missed the team's first five games of the season before being cleared to play on Oct. 19.

The Bruins' team internist, Dr. David Finn, issued the update on the 33-year-old Backes in a press release from the team.

"David Backes will undergo surgery on Thursday to remove a portion of his colon," the release said. "The expected recovery time is approximately 8 weeks. The decision to have surgery was made in consultation with team physicians as well as outside specialists in the management of diverticulitis.

"David's episode of diverticulitis at the beginning of the season was his second episode in two months and was complicated with an abscess (collection of infection adjacent to the colon) that required drainage. Repeated episodes, like what David experienced, have a very high likelihood of recurrence in the near term, which is why he was advised to have surgery to remove the area of colon causing the problem. It was determined that attempting to delay the surgery until after the season was an unacceptable risk to his health."

--New Jersey Devils center Brian Boyle will make his season debut versus the Canucks at Rogers Place in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Boyle was cleared to practice on Oct. 21, over one month removed from when he was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia -- a form of blood and bone marrow cancer. He was activated on Wednesday by the Metropolitan Division-leading Devils (8-2-0), who placed fellow forward Kyle Palmieri on injured reserve with a lower-body ailment.

Palmieri has three goals and four assists in seven games this season. The 26-year-old scored 102 goals and set up 104 others in 367 career contests with Anaheim and New Jersey since being selected by the Ducks with the 26th overall pick of the 2009 draft.

--Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Brett Pesce is in concussion protocol and will not accompany the team on its upcoming two-game road trip, coach Bill Peters announced.

Pesce was struck in the head by a puck during Tuesday's practice.

The 22-year-old is averaging 22:04 of ice time and has one assist in 10 games this season for the Hurricanes (4-4-2), who visit the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday and the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday.

--The Dallas Stars recalled forward Jason Dickinson from the Texas Stars of the American Hockey League.

Dickinson, 22, currently shares fourth place in the AHL and leads Texas with six goals in 2017-18. He ranks second on the team with seven points in nine games.

Dickinson split last season between the NHL and the AHL, recording two goals in 10 games with Dallas and adding 30 points (nine goals, 21 assists) in 58 contests for Texas.

--The Buffalo Sabres recalled forward Nicholas Baptiste from the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey.

Baptiste, 22, joins the Sabres for his first recall of the season after recording four points (three goals, one assist) in 14 games for Buffalo in his first NHL season in 2016-17.

Through eight games with Rochester, the 6-foot-1, 205-pound Baptiste is tied for the team lead with three goals and tied for third with five points.

NHL roundup: Rangers hand Lightning first home loss
    November 2, 2017

TAMPA, Fla. -- J.T. Miller scored the winning goal 1:19 into overtime as the New York Rangers picked up their first road win of the season, surprising the Tampa Bay Lightning with a 2-1 victory on Thursday.

Miller swept in front of the net and beat goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy, who made 33 saves in regulation. Miller scored his third goal of the season moments after intercepting a wraparound attempt by Nikita Kucherov.

New York (5-7-2) had been 0-3-0 away from home this season, while the Lightning (10-2-2) fell to 6-1-1 at home.

The Lightning were able to overcome a slew of turnovers in their own zone, with Vasilevskiy making more than his share of saves on breakaways from errant passes.

Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist stopped 27 shots.

    Capitals 4, Islanders 3

WASHINGTON -- Lars Eller had two goals, including the game-winner with 3:21 left, and added an assist as Washington defeated New York.

Minutes after Washington killed off a New York power play, Eller took a feed from Tom Wilson and came down the left side. He fired high from the left circle and beat Islanders goalie Jaroslav Halak on the short side to snap a 3-3 tie.

The Islanders trailed 3-2 after two periods, but Anders Lee tied it at the 7:00 mark when he got hit by a Thomas Hickey shot and fired the loose puck past goalie Braden Holtby for his second goal of the night to go along with an assist.

    Flyers 2, Blues 0

ST. LOUIS -- Michal Neuvirth stopped 33 shots and made an early second-period goal by Brandon Manning stand up to give Philadelphia a shutout win over St. Louis.

The loss, which snapped a four-game winning streak for the Blues, was their first at home in six games this season and their first in regulation in their last eight games.

Neuvirth withstood a strong start by the Blues, who outshot the Flyers 10-1 in the first 10 minutes of the game and went on to post his 11th career shutout.

    Blue Jackets 7, Panthers 3

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Josh Anderson and Oliver Bjorkstrand scored twice each to lead Columbus to a win over Florida.

Anderson has five goals this season, and Bjorkstrand has four. The Jackets also got one goal and two assists from Boone Jenner.

The Panthers lost their third straight game despite one goal and two assists by second-line center Vincent Trocheck.

    Bruins 2, Golden Knights 1

BOSTON -- Sean Kuraly scored his first regular-season goal midway through the third period and Tuukka Rask stopped 28 shots to lead Boston to a victory over Vegas.

The loss was the third straight for the expansion team, who settled for a 1-1 split with the Bruins in their first season series.

Kuraly, playing in his 19th regular-season game, stuffed a rebound past Maxime Lagace at 9:53 of the third period to snap a 1-1 tie.

    Senators 3, Red Wings 1

OTTAWA -- Ottawa reverted to defensive form in a victory over Detroit at Canadian Tire Centre.

Mark Stone, Alex Burrows and Nate Thompson scored for the Senators. who were coming off an 8-3 loss to the Montreal Canadiens.

    Anthony Mantha scored for Detroit.

    Jets 5, Stars 2

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Special-teams success and a Mark Scheifele hat trick led Winnipeg to a win over Dallas.

Scheifele scored a power-play goal in the first play and two goals in the third period. Patrik Laine and Tyler Myers also scored for Winnipeg.

Alexander Radulov and Mattias Janmark scored for Dallas.

    Wild 6, Canadiens 3

SAINT PAUL, Minn. -- Matt Cullen had a goal and assist on his 41st birthday, and Minnesota earned a win against Montreal.

Devan Dubnyk made 28 saves in goal for Minnesota. Nino Niederreiter, Tyler Ennis, Ryan Suter, Jared Spurgeon and Marcus Foligno also scored for the Wild, who recovered from a listless home loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday.

Brendan Gallagher scored twice for Montreal.

    Avalanche 5, Hurricanes 3

DENVER -- Semyon Varlamov had a career-high 57 saves, Carl Soderberg and Patrik Nemeth had a goal and an assist each, and Colorado beat Carolina.

Mikko Rantanen, Gabriel Landeskog and Blake Comeau also had goals and Nathan MacKinnon had two assists for Colorado, which survived a strong Carolina push in the third period.

The Hurricanes outshot the Avalanche 22-7 in the last period but Varlamov stopped all of them to eclipse his previous high in saves of 54 done against Chicago on Jan. 6, 2015.

    Flames 2, Penguins 1 (OT)

CALGARY, Alberta -- Mark Giordano scored at 2:19 of overtime to lead Calgary to a win over Pittsburgh.

Giordano took a pass from Matthew Tkachuk and wired a shot to the top corner past Pittsburgh goalie Tristan Jarry, who was making just his second NHL start.

Sean Monahan also scored for the Flames, while goalie Mike Smith finished with 43 saves.

Patric Hornqvist scored the lone goal of the game for the Penguins (8-5-2), who skated to a 3-2 road win over the Edmonton Oilers one night earlier.

    Sabres 5, Coyotes 4

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Kyle Okposo scored with one second remaining in the first period to swing the momentum and start Buffalo on a run of five consecutive goals, and the Sabres kept Arizona winless at home.

Benoit Pouliot had two goals and an assist and linemate Ryan O'Reilly added two assists to support Robin Lehner, who stopped 25 shots despite giving up three Arizona goals in the final eight minutes. The Pouliot-O'Reilly-Okposo line totaled seven points to help fend off the Coyotes' late comeback.

Antti Raanta made an uneven return to net for the Coyotes, who are 0-5-1 at home and an NHL-worst 1-12-1 overall. Raanta, who sat out nine games with a lower-body injury, made 26 saves but couldn't fend off a succession of odd-man rushes in which Pouliot, Seth Griffith and Evander Kane scored.

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here……

    13) Terrible news for the Houston Texans: Deshaun Watson tore his ACL Thursday, and is done for the season- the injury sounds similar to what happened to Teddy Bridgewater last summer in Minnesota, a non-contact injury.

Tom Savage starts for Houston Sunday; Texans will sign QB Matt McGloin as a backup— he played for Bill O’Brien at Penn State.

    12) Patrick Ewing is the new basketball coach at Georgetown; his son Patrick Jr was an assistant for the Hoyas last year, but because of the school’s nepotism laws, Ewing Jr cannot keep his assistant’s job with his father as head coach, which seems like a rule that lacks common sense.

If Ewing Jr was an assistant under John Thompson III, why can’t he keep that job under the next coach, no matter who it is?

    11) Colts put Andrew Luck on IR; he is done for the year. Over the last three seasons, Luck will have played in only 22 of 48 Indy games— his career record is 43-27, plus 3-3 in playoff games.

    10) Lance McCullers is the first pitcher EVER to hit four batters in a game, but not allow a run in that game.

    9) Good news for Philly 76ers’ fans: Joel Embiid played 30 minutes against the Atlanta Hawks Wednesday, first time he has played that many minutes in an NBA game.

    8) Phoenix Suns lost their first three games, then they fired their coach and told one of their best players to stay home until they could trade him, which hasn’t happened yet.

Suns are 3-1 since then, with wins over Portland/Utah. Go figure.

    7) Of all the major league players with 3,000+ career hits, Cal Ripken Jr (.276) has the lowest career batting average.

    6) Former UCLA/Washington/Colorado coach Rick Neuheisel is apparently interested in the vacant Oregon State job. Neuheisel is 87-59 as a head coach, 55-44 in conference games- these days he works on CBS Sports Network.

    5) Why did the Buffalo Bills trade for Kelvin Benjamin? Their WR’s have 45 receptions this season, their RB’s 47- they’re only NFL team whose RB’s have caught more balls than the WR’s.

    4) Mets signed Ruben Amaro Jr as their new first base coach; he was GM of the Phillies from 2008-15, then was first base coach for the Red Sox the last two seasons. Has to be a tremendous change, going from running a franchise to being the first base coach.

    3) NBA is holding its 2018 draft lottery May 15 in Chicago; the draft combine is then May 16-20, also in Chicago.

    2) Texans were -14 over the Indianapolis Colts before Watson’s injury; now Houston is -7.

    1) Not only a dismal day for the Colts, but what about all the fantasy league owners across America; teams that added Deshaun Watson had to he happier than hell, but now this, prize rookie Watson out for the season, after getting hurt in practice.

Lot of fantasy league money goes down the drain with both Luck/Watson now out for the season, plus the Aaron Rodgers teams are also probably sunk.

Also a really bad day for the NFL, which needs new stars, and Watson is most definitely a star.

Connor McDavid sets up 3 goals, Oilers beat Devils 6-3
    November 3, 2017

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers put it all together against the New Jersey Devils.

McDavid had three assists and Edmonton beat New Jersey 6-3 on Friday night to hand the Devils their first road loss of the season.

''Tonight was the first time in a while that we had everyone going, and all lines playing well and playing the right way, and we were rewarded,'' McDavid said. ''So it's good to see.''

Drake Caggiula, Ryan Strome, Oscar Klefbom, Milan Lucic, Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored for the Oilers. They snapped a two-game losing streak to improve to 4-7-1.

''We've got to get back to the mode we had last year,'' Lucic said. ''When you win one and you're feeling good about things, you've got to keep it going for as long as you can.''

Former Oiler Taylor Hall, Jesper Bratt and Brian Gibbons responded for the Devils. They dropped to 9-3-0.

''It seemed like everything kind of went in for them,'' Hall said. ''Passes off skates and everything tonight.''

Edmonton started the scoring five minutes into the opening period on the power play as McDavid sent a pass through the crease to Caggiula, who tapped the puck in before goalie Cory Schneider could get across.

The Oilers made it 2-0 three minutes later when Adam Larsson's point shot ended up going off Strome and in.

Hall came back to haunt his old team with five minutes left in the first when he backhanded the rebound from Miles Wood's shot past goalie Cam Talbot.

New Jersey tied it five minutes into the second period when Bratt's spin-around shot hit the post and caromed into the net.

The Oilers regained just over a minute later on Klefbom's blast on the rush.

Edmonton made it 4-2 with 1:04 to play in the second when a rebound hit Lucic while he was driving to the net and bounced in.

The Oilers added some insurance with seven minutes remaining in the third period when McDavid made a perfect pass to Draisaitl at the side of the net for his third of the season.

The Devils got that goal back just over a minute later on a tip by Gibbons, his team-leading sixth.

Edmonton got an empty-net goal as Hall sent the puck back to the point and almost scored on his own net, leading to a tap-in by Nugent-Hopkins.

NOTES: The clubs will meet again Thursday night in New Jersey. ... Devils forward Marcus Johansson missed the game with a concussion suffered on Wednesday in Vancouver.

    UP NEXT:

Devils: At Calgary on Sunday night.

    Oilers: Host Detroit on Sunday.
