    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

    — Anthony Rizzo led off Friday’s game with a home run that was changed to a foul ball; Joe Maddon got thrown out…….before an out was recorded in the game.

    — Cubs have only 4 quality starts in 14 games this month, one in their last nine games.

    — Entering Friday night’s games, 48% of replay reviews resulted in overturned calls.

    — Jimmer Fredette made 92-100 3-pointers at a charity exhibition this week. Amazing.

    — Orioles drafted Zach Jarrett in the 28th round of the draft; he was a power-hitting outfielder for NC-Charlotte, and is the son of NASCAR legend Dale Jarrett.

    — Four guys, including Paul Casey/Brooks Koepka, are tied atop the US Open leaderboard at -7.

    Armadillo: Saturday's Den: Pac-12 football trends…….

Taking a look at some trends involving Pac-12 football teams…….

USC scored 45+ points in three of its last four bowls, last three of which were decided by a total of 8 points. Underdogs covered 4 of their last 5 bowls. Since 2011, Trojans are 23-12 as home favorites.

UCLA is 2-8-1 vs spread in its last 11 non-conference games; they’re 0-4 vs spread in last four games as a home underdog.

Utah won its last four bowls; Kyle Whittingham is 10-1 in bowls. Utes are 28-11 the last three years, with a +24 turnover ratio- they covered eight of last ten as a road underdog. That said, Utah has only nine starters back this year and could regress some.

Last year, Colorado played in its first bowl since 2007; their last bowl win was in ’04. Under coach MacIntyre, Buffaloes are 10-2 as a home favorite.

Arizona State is 11-14 the last two years; they didn’t go to a bowl LY. ASU is 2-3 in its last five bowls, with average total of 76.4 in those games. Sun Devils are 17-9 as home favorites, 5-10 as road underdogs under Todd Graham.

Arizona has 14 starters back this year its offensive line has 89 returning starts. Wildcats are 3-1 in bowls under RichRod, scoring 41.5 pts/game, but were favored in all four games (1-3 vs spread). Arizona is 5-13 vs spread as a road dog under RichRod.

Washington is 27-14 under Petersen, with a +36 turnover ratio- they were +18 LY. Huskies are 6-3 in last nine games as a road favorite- their OL has 97 returning starts this season.

Since 2010, Stanford is 76-18; they won their last three bowls. Cardinal is 7-2-1 vs spread as an underdog in the Shaw era. All that, and they’re -2 in turnovers the last four years. Unusual for a team to win that much without a really good turnover ratio.

Oregon has 17 starters back and a new coach; from 2012-14, they were +55 in turnovers, but were +5/-3 last two years. Ducks are 3-10 vs spread in last 13 home games, 3-8-1 in last dozen non-league games. Oregon is 12-7-1 vs spread in last 20 road games.

Washington State has improved dramatically under Mike Leach, but they started last two years by losing to a I-AA team. Since 2013, Coogs are 14-4 as road underdogs, 10-6 as home favorites. Senior QB Falk has 28 starts under his belt.

Oregon State is 0-11 on road (5-6 vs spread) under Anderson; they have 15 starters back, should be much-improved. Since 2013, Beavers are 4-9 vs spread in non-league games.

Cal Bears have #110 experience team this year, with a new coach; they’re 7-2-1 vs spread in last 10 non-league games, but since ’07, they’re 5-15 as a road favorite. Cal’s coordinators were both head coaches LY, one at I-AA Eastern Washington, the other at Fresno State.

Nine MLB things you may have missed while betting playoff basketball

We commence our inaugural 2017 Major League Baseball column with the following tidbit about the Houston Astros, the club that currently boasts the highest winning percentage in all the sport (45-22, .672): Of Houston’s 45 MLB victories so far this season, 37 (82.3 percent) have come by two or more runs.

For baseball bettors, this is an important nugget to consider because more often than not, the price that accompanies the backing of one of the best teams in the sport is just too high to justify the risk. Case in point: Take Tuesday’s Texas-Houston showdown in which Astros righty Brad Peacock closed at the heavy price of -190 before eventually falling 4-2 at home to the Rangers. Had you laid the -1.5 run line with the Astros, at least you wouldn’t have lost $190 for every $100 you attempted to win.

The run line can serve as a very powerful wagering option in the baseball gambler’s arsenal for those intrigued by the concept of backing favorites. The benefit, of course, is the limiting of risk, while the detriment comes in the form of having to win by two or more runs. This type of proposition is not for the faint of heart as it pertains to clubs like the Washington Nationals who, despite a healthy .600 winning percentage entering Thursday’s slate of games, ranks eighth in MLB in blown saves, with 11.

On the flip side, note that American League MVP favorite Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees have seen each of their last ten victories come by two or more runs.

The Major League Baseball run line: Learn it, study it, embrace it.

For those of you who are just now making the transition from NBA wagering to MLB wagering, here are nine factoids to file away as you attempt to grind out a profit during the summer months:

    1. It’s no surprise whatsoever to see names like Clayton Kershaw (9-2) and Dallas Keuchel (9-0) atop the Major League Baseball wins column on June 15. But what is surprising is the fact that those aforementioned Cy Young winners are joined by 34-year-old Jason Vargas (9-3) of the dismal 30-34 Kansas City Royals. In his 12 decisions this season, Vargas has closed at an average price of +112 with only two of his nine victories coming as a favorite. Without a shadow of a doubt, Jason Vargas has been one of the best value bets in baseball so far this season.

    2. When it comes to betting overs, keep a very close eye on the Mets (37-19-8, .660), Marlins (37-23-4, .616) and Reds (37-24-4, .606), who have all returned substantial profits for their backers in 2017.

    3. As it pertains to betting Unders, you’ll want to familiarize yourself with the Cleveland Indians (35-25-3, .583). Outside of the Tribe, none of the other 29 clubs have produced a highly favorable under record as of June 15.

    4. What a difference a year makes: In San Francisco, Johnny Cueto turned an 18-5 campaign last year into a 5-6 record through the first 2.5 months of the 2017 season compliments of a 4.57 ERA, Cueto’s worst mark since his rookie season in 2008. Meanwhile, teammate Jeff Samardzija, who went 12-11 in 2016, currently leads all of Major League Baseball with 8 losses (2-8, 4.31 ERA). And how about 2016 American League Cy Young winner Rick Porcello, who went 22-4 with a 3.15 ERA last season? Funny you should ask because the 28-year-old is currently 3-8 with a 4.67 ERA so far in 2017. Three respectable pitchers in 2016 who have become three fade options less than one full year later.

    5. Umpire alert: Home teams are 10-0 when Chad Whitson is behind the dish, 10-3 when Gerry Davis is calling balls and strikes, 10-4 when the honors go to Phil Cuzzi and 9-2 when its Paul Nauert.

    6. Umpire alert part II: As it pertains to high scoring totals, 11.73 runs per game have been scored in Manny Gonzalez’s 11 games behind the plate this season (highest in MLB), while 11.58 runs per game have been scored in Sam Holbrook’s 12 contests behind the dish. On the flip side, just 6.77 runs per game are being averaged when Gerry Davis gets the call (13 games) and only 6.80 runs per game when the honors belong to Will Little (10 games).

    7. MLB futures: With an MLB-best +114 run differential, give me the New York Yankees at 7/1 and the Houston Astros (+102, second in MLB) at 9/2 to win the World Series this season. With an NL-best run differential of +87, I’ll take the Los Angeles Dodgers at 5/1 to win the Series as well. Granted, I’m not exactly thinking outside the box here, but I feel as if I can get ahead of the market at these prices due to the fact that all three of those aforementioned clubs should be very active come the July trade deadline.

    8. Of the Philadelphia Phillies’ last 22 losses, 17 have come by two or more runs. Remember what we said earlier about the MLB run line? Well, the Phillies currently rank 29th in MLB in run differential (-85).

    9. Speaking of horrific run differentials, the San Diego Padres (-113, worst in MLB) haven’t lost a game by one run since May 13 against the Chicago White Sox (5-4 in Chicago). For those scoring at home, that means each of San Diego’s last 16 defeats have come by two or more runs.

MLB Daily Line Drive: Saturday's picks, betting odds and analysis

    Double-Play Picks

Cleveland Indians at Minnesota Twins (+130, 10.5)

    *Game 2 of doubleheader

The Indians will try to continue their march to the top of the American League Central standings as they continue their series with the first-place Twins with a doubleheader Saturday in Minnesota.

Cleveland took the first game of the weekend set 8-1 on Friday night to pull within one game of Minnesota for the lead in the Central and can take over the lead by sweeping both games Saturday. The Tribe will send right-hander Mike Clevinger to the mound in the second games, while the Twins will counter with lefty Adalberto Mejia.

It has been an up-and-down season for Clevinger, going 2-3 with 4.09 ERA, he does have a respectable 1.212 WHIP however and the right-hander has been much better on the road. He is 2-1 with 2.70 ERA and a 0.960 WHIP with opponents hitting just .130 off him.

The Twins counter with Mejia, a 23-year-old southpaw who has struggled since joining Minnesota’s rotation. Mejia is 1-2 with a 5.75 ERA and a 1.583 WHIP and he will have his hands full with a Cleveland lineup that is starting to heat up.

Newly acquired Edwin Encarnacion is doing what he was brought in to do, leading the team in dingers at 14 after going long in his last two games. So watch out when Encarnacion gets hot, it’s usually white hot. Meanwhile, the Tribe as a team is scoring 6.4 runs per game over the last 10 games, up from their season average of 4.6.

It has been a great start to the year for the Twins, but the Indians are a much more talented team and that is beginning to show as the season wears on.

Oh, and the Indians have won five straight meetings with the Twins.

    Pick: Indians -150

New York Yankees at Oakland Athletics (+120, 9.5)

The Yankees west coast road trip has not gone to plan so far, as they are just 1-4 so far and are looking for their first win of the series against the A’s after dropping the first two of a four-game set.

New York sends Masahiro Tanaka to the mound for Game 3, but the Japanese right-hander has been the model of inconsistency in 2017. Tanaka is 5-6 with a whopping 6.07 ERA, but is coming off a performance in which he pitched 6.2 innings allowing just one run with eight strikeouts. Before that in his two previous outings, he had allowed 12 runs with just six strikeouts, which has essentially been Tanaka’s season in a nutshell. He takes on an Oakland lineup that is much better at home, scoring five runs per game hitting .251 with an OPS of .796.

The A’s counter with Jesse Hahn, who is 2-4 with a 3.56 ERA, but the A’s are just 1-4 in his last five starts, where he has pitched to a 5.50 ERA in those games and he has the tall task of slowing down the booming Bronx Bombers. The Yankees are scoring 8.0 runs per game in the last eight games.

Additionally the Over is 9-1-1 in Athletics last 11 games vs. a right-handed starter and 8-3 in the Yankees last 11 overall.

The bats should stay hot Saturday by the Bay.

    Pick: Over 9.5

    Yesterday's Picks: 1-1
    Season To Date: 64-54-7

    Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

    Streaking:
Chase Anderson, Milwaukee Brewers (5-2, 2.83 ERA, $311)

Not much was expected out of Chase Anderson in 2017, he finished each of his first three big league seasons with ERA’s over 4.00. However, this has been a career season for the Brewers’ right-hander and his last four trips to the mound he has been simply dominate.

In his last four starts he has thrown 27.2 innings, allowed one earned run (.33 ERA), 14 hits, 30 strikeouts, 6 walks. And today he is pitching against the San Diego Padres, who have the worst ranked offence in all of the Major Leagues. Anderson and the Brewers are home chalk today at -157 against the Padres.

    Slumping:
Rick Porcello, Boston Red Sox (3-8, 4.67, $-461)

The other end of pre-season expectations is Rick Porcello, as the defending American League Cy Young Award winner has been mediocre this season and that’s being kind. He currently sits at 231 (out of 246) on our Covers Starting Pitcher Money Board.

Over his last three starts, Porcello has looked like a shell of the pitcher that won 22 games in 2016. 18.1 innings, 26 hits, 13 earned runs and four home runs. That adds up to a 6.38 ERA and an opponents batting average of .357. Porcello gets the ball tonight in Houston against the league leading Astros and can be had as +103 road dogs.

Weather To Keep An Eye On

This could get pushed as the forecast is calling for better weather later in the evening. There is also a chance of thunderstorms developing in Philadelphia and a 60 percent chance of rain where the Diamondbacks and Phillies will attempt to get their game in.

    * Rays at Tigers (Total: 9): 17 MPH wind blowing in from right-center field.

    Ump Of The Day

Lance Barksdale: Lance Barksdale gets the pads today at Oakland Coliseum where the Athletics are hosting the New York Yankees. Barksdale has been one of baseball’s top Under umpires this season with only two Overs cashing in his 12 appearances behind the plate and when the total is nine or over the Under is 6-0.

Barksdale’s generous 64.4 strike percentage gives pitchers a little more room around the edges and forces hitters to react accordingly. Masahiro Tanaka and Jesse Hahn will be getting the benefits today with the total sitting at 9.
