    April 3, 2017

WASHINGTON (AP) Adam Lind's first swing as a member of the Nationals resulted in a pinch-hit, go-ahead, two-run homer in the seventh inning, and Bryce Harper went deep on opening day for the fifth time in his young career, leading Washington past the Miami Marlins 4-2 on Monday.

Stephen Strasburg (1-0) earned the win, allowing two runs and six hits in seven innings, pitching out of the stretch the whole way. It was his return to action after missing last September and the playoffs with a right elbow injury.

Matt Wieters singled ahead of Lind's drive off David Phelps (0-1) that made it 3-2.

    ORIOLES 3, BLUE JAYS 2

BALTIMORE (AP) - Mark Trumbo homered off Jason Grilli (0-1) with two outs in the 11th inning in a rematch of last year's AL wild card playoff, won by Toronto 5-2 on an 11th-inning home run by Edwin Encarnacion.

Tyler Wilson (1-0), the fourth Baltimore reliever, pitched one shutout inning in the 25th Camden Yards opener.

    METS 6, BRAVES 0

NEW YORK (AP) - Noah Syndergaard struck out seven over six sharp innings in his first opening day start for New York before leaving with a blister, Asdrubal Cabrera snapped a seventh-inning tie with a single and the Mets broke through following a pivotal replay reversal at the plate in which Wilmer Flores initially was called out.

New York took advantage of five walks by a shaky Braves bullpen in a six-run bottom of the seventh that lasted 35 minutes. Curtis Granderson had a sacrifice fly and Lucas Duda busted the game open with a three-run double off Eric O'Flaherty.

Hansel Robles (1-0) worked a perfect inning for the win. Ian Krol (0-1) was the loser.

    RED SOX 5, PIRATES 3

BOSTON (AP) - Rookie Andrew Benintendi hit a three-run homer off Gerrit Cole (0-1) that capped a five-run fifth inning as Boston began its post-David Ortiz era.

Rick Porcello (1-0) gave up three runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings while striking out five. Craig Kimbrel retired Starling Marte on a game-ending popup with two on for the save.

    ROCKIES 7, BREWERS 5

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Bud Black won his debut as Colorado manager, and Greg Holland got a save in his first game with the Rockies.

Mark Reynolds homered, had three RBIs and scored the tying run in a two-run seventh following two defensive lapses by Milwaukee.

Milwaukee's Junior Guerra left his first opening-day start in the big leagues after three innings with a strained right calf, grimacing as he broke out of the batter's box after laying down a bunt. The right-hander will go on the disabled list.

Carlos Estevez (1-0) pitched a hitless sixth. Holland, who missed last season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, walked Jonathan Villar leading off the ninth, then retired Eric Thames one a lineout to center and Ryan Braun on a game-ending, double-play grounder started by third baseman Nolan Arenado, who dove to his left.

    TWINS 7, ROYALS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Miguel Sano homered and drew the third bases-loaded walk during a dreadful seventh inning for Kansas City's bullpen, and the Twins won an opener for the first time in nine years.

Ervin Santana (1-0) gave up two hits and two walks while striking out three over seven innings, aided by two diving catches of sinking line drives by center fielder Byron Buxton.

Matt Strahm (0-1) and Travis Wood allowed four runners while recording only one out.

    PHILLIES 4, REDS 3

CINCINNATI (AP) - Cesar Hernandez opened the Phillies' season with a homer on Cincinnati's eighth pitch, and Jeremy Hellickson drove in a run with his first career triple.

Hellickson (1-0) pitched into the sixth, allowing a run and six hits, and he also contributed his RBI triple in the sixth. Right fielder Scott Schebler failed to make a diving catch of his two-out liner, letting the ball get by him as Hellickson chugged across an infield turned muddy by several innings of rain.

Jeanmar Gomez gave up Scooter Gennett's two-out, two-run homer in the ninth before retiring Billy Hamilton on a routine fly for the save.

Scott Feldman (0-1) allowed three runs and seven hits over 4 2/3 innings in his third opening day start.

    DODGERS 14, PADRES 3

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Joc Pederson launched a grand slam and the Dodgers backed Clayton Kershaw with a franchise-record four home runs on opening day.

Pederson drove in five runs, Yasmani Grandal homered twice and Corey Seager added a three-run shot.

Kershaw (1-0) allowed two runs - one earned - and two hits in seven innings, struck out eight and walked none in his seventh consecutive opening day start.

Jhoulys Chacin (0-1) gave up nine runs and eight hits in 3 1/3 innings in his Padres debut.

    INDIANS 8, RANGERS 5

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Abraham Almonte singled in the go-ahead run in a three-run ninth as Cleveland won the opener of its AL title defense.

Making his first opening-day start for Texas, Yu Darvish had a 5-1 lead behind Rougned Odor, who homered twice and drove in four runs.

Edwin Encarnacion tied the score 5-5 with an eighth-inning homer off Matt Bush, and the Indians went ahead against Sam Dyson. Carlos Santana added an RBI double and scored on Michael Brantley's single.

Andrew Miller (1-0) struck out two in a perfect eighth, and Cody Allen got the save by striking out the side around Elvis Andrus' triple.

    ASTROS 3, MARINERS 0

HOUSTON (AP) - Dallas Keuchel (1-0) allowed two hits over seven innings, Luke Gregerson and Ken Giles completed the three-hitter and Houston won its fifth straight opener.

George Springer became Houston's first player since Terry Puhl in 1980 to lead off the first game with a home run. Carlos Correa homered and drove in two runs.

Felix Hernandez (0-1), making his 10th opening day start, allowed two runs and five hits while striking out six in five innings before leaving with tightness in a groin.

    ATHLETICS 4, ANGELS 2

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Khris Davis hit a go-ahead homer in the sixth and connected again leading off the eighth to lead Oakland past Anaheim.

Davis had just the second multihomer game on opening day in Oakland history - Jason Giambi did it in 2000 - to back Kendall Graveman (1-0). The right-hander struck out seven over six innings.

Mike Trout hit a two-run homer in the third inning for the Angels, then Yonder Alonso's RBI single in the fifth tied it at 2.

Davis, who dealt with a sore quadriceps muscle leading up to the opener, connected first against Angels starter Ricky Nolasco (0-1) then JC Ramirez for his 12th career multihomer game. The slugger didn't hit his first home run last season until April 21 then finished with a career-high 42.

LEADING OFF: Cubs and Yankees try again, Shoemaker returns
    April 3, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

    TRY AGAIN

The World Series champion Cubs go again after their first win as former Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta starts in St. Louis against Adam Wainwright. The Cardinals beat Chicago in the opener at Busch Stadium, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

    NO WORRIES ... YET

The Yankees and their fans aren't known for more patience. So after posting the best record in the majors during spring training, it was a jarring opener for New York - youngster Gary Sanchez and Greg Bird went a combined 0 for 9 with a couple of misplays and ace Masahiro Tanaka was rocked by Tampa Bay. The Yanks aim to do better when CC Sabathia starts against Jake Odorizzi.

    GREAT TO SEE YOU

Matt Shoemaker makes his first start for the Angels since being hit in the head by a line drive last September when he pitches at Oakland. It will be exactly seven months to the day since he was struck by a liner from Seattle's Kyle Seager, an injury that forced Shoemaker to have surgery to stop bleeding in his brain. He no longer thinks about the frightening ordeal and now wears protective headgear. ''Not too big of a deal,'' he said.

    WHAT'S IN A NAME?

The first game at newly named Guaranteed Rate Field wasn't guaranteed - it rained in Chicago, the Tigers and White Sox never got started and were washed out. They hope to play the opener, with Detroit ace Justin Verlander facing Jose Quintana

    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Individual betting matchups for the Masters this week:

    — Dustin Johnson -$130 vs Rory McIlroy +$110

    — Rory McIlroy -$170 vs Jordan Spieth +$110

    — Jordan Spieth -$160 vs Hideki Matsuyama +$140

    — Phil Mickelson -$115 vs Henrik Stenson -$105

    — Henrik Stenson -$110 vs Adam Scott -$110

    — Adam Scott -$130 vs Justin Thomas +$110

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

    13) North Carolina 71, Gonzaga 65— Ton of missed shots led to a game with lot of whistles; both teams shot under 36% for the game. Zags had the lead in last 2:00- they missed an awful lot of shots in the paint. Tar Heels win a title this year, after losing at the buzzer LY. As for Gonzaga, they had a great season that had a disappointing ending.

    12) 25 guys on the San Diego Padres’ Opening Day roster make a total of $28.13M this season. Clayton Kershaw makes $33M, all by himself.

    11) Dodgers and Detroit Tigers have baseball’s highest payrolls this season.

    10) Indians play in Arizona this weekend, which means no DH; I’m hoping they use Carlos Santana in the outfield for a game; then he becomes eligible in the outfield all season for my fantasy team. Would be a big help to the Armadillos.

    9) Eagles and Redskins are only teams that will be playing both Rams/Chargers in Los Angeles this season; Eagles would like those games in consecutive weeks.

    8) Cincinnati Bengals haven’t opened a season at home since 2009; they want to open at home this season.

    7) Duke has had two basketball players transfer since their season ended two weeks ago; it is not a good optic. It almost seems like that if you’re not good enough to jump to the NBA or start for the Blue Devils, then they tell you to take a hike.

    6) First meal when I got to Las Vegas: Steak ’n Shake. Tastes good and doesn’t cost much. Also had my first-ever chicken quesadilla Monday night- it will not be my last one.

    5) This 10-day disabled list in baseball is going to take some getting used to- has been 15 days for a long time— it was 21 before that.

    4) Rangers’ SS Elvis Andrus learned English by listening to Rascal Flatts songs. Really, he did.

    3) Oklahoma City Thunder is 31-9 when Russell Westbrook gets a triple/double, 13-24 when he does not.

    2) Since 1970, most pitches thrown in an Opening Day start: Jack Morris (144) 1992, Roger Clemens (135) 1988, Randy Johnson (133) 2000 and 2001.

1a) North Carolina won the national title in men’s basketball.
1b) South Carolina won the women’s national title.
1c) Coastal Carolina’s cheerleaders were suspended after they were anonymously accused of being involved in a prostitution ring, amongst other things.

Big year in the Carolinas. Oy.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Happy Hump Day, America…….

    13) Tony Romo retired Tuesday and will now work on CBS with Jim Nantz on their #1 NFL broadcasting team. There are rumors he will also do some work on CBS golf telecasts, seeing as how he is a scratch golfer.

    12) North Carolina Tar Heels got zero #1 votes in the preseason Top 25 poll- they won the national championship. Wonder if they’ll get any #1 votes next preseason.

    11) Washington Wizards are 47-31, most games they’ve won since 1979. Good for Scott Brooks, who got a bum deal in Oklahoma City.

    10) Minnesota Timberwolves’ star Karl Anthony Towns is younger than all ten players who started in the Gonzaga-UNC game Monday night.

    9) I don’t give a rat’s ass about who wins MVP in any sport; it does not matter. You listen to some people talk about the NBA, and they talk more about individuals than teams. Winning and losing are all that truly matter; that and effort. Too much talk about individuals.

    8) San Diego Padres have a payroll of roughly $71M this season, but over half of that is to players who are now on other teams.

    7) Portland/Denver are tied in loss column for #8 playoff spot in the West. Celtics/Cavaliers are tied for first in the Eastern Conference. Miami trails Indiana by a half-game for the 8th and final playoff spot in the East.

    6) College basketball coaching changes:
    a) Joe Pasternack (Arizona ass’t) takes over at Cal-Santa Barbara.
    b) Lamont Paris (Wisconsin ass’t) takes over at Chattanooga.
    c) CB McGrath (North Carolina ass’t) takes over at NC-Wilmington.
    d) Matt Figger (South Carolina ass’t) takes over at Austin Peay.

    5) It is funny that Georgetown paid a search firm to find their new basketball coach; Patrick Ewing is the best player in Georgetown history- couldn’t have been that difficult to identify him.

    4) NHL players are unhappy that the league won’t set time aside for players to compete in the Olympics next winter.

    3) Quote of the Day, part 2, from Klay Thompson, a great “outside” shooter:
“I’d probably say the weather’s gotten better. The sunshine has been so good to me. … It just puts me in a great mood to come to the gym every day, get my work in, go home, enjoy it — the outdoors. The Bay Area is beautiful. That’s a big part of it — not even kidding.”

    2) If the NBA playoffs started this morning (they do not), matchups would be:
    East
    Indiana/Cleveland, Chicago/Boston, Atlanta/Toronto, Milwaukee/Washington

    West
    Portland/Golden State, Memphis/San Antonio, Oklahoma City/Houston, Clippers/Utah.

1— Tony Romo earned $127,422,458 in salary during his NFL career; curious to see how he does behind a microphone. I know he’ll like announcing better on Monday mornings, when he wakes up and isn’t sore all over from getting hit all day Sunday.
