Early-season hot takes can be dangerous
    November 8, 2016

Statement games have ruled the first few sips of the NBA season.

While not necessarily competitive, the blowouts have been like shots of Espresso, decisively powerful.

The Spurs crushed the Warriors, spoiling Kevin Durant’s regular-season debut at the new Superteam Arena. Instantly, the “Golden State isn’t going to rule basketball” crowd broke out in song and dance.

The Warriors then destroyed Oklahoma City last week, backing KD wholeheartedly in the team-building exercise of making sure Russell Westbrook didn’t leave Oracle happy with himself while wearing his photographer get-up.

Durant caught fire after a slow start and the Thunder were toast. It’s OKC’s only loss of the season through their first seven games, but somehow, the spin on it was that Westbrook is stuck with a bunch of role players. Never mind that it was the same team that had beaten the Clippers in L.A. the previous night, handing them their only loss thus far, but wild exclamations are easy to make this time of year.

The Cavs, the last unbeaten remaining through six games, will go 82-0. See? Simple.

So far, the season has been fun, carving out its niche despite a tremendous World Series and football. Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah returned to Chicago and played conquering heroes on the same day the Cubs had their victory parade. Unfortunately for New York, that happens to be the Knicks best effort of the short season. The Bulls are 4-3, showing signs of cohesion and grit while also having put instances on display that why some observers feel their makeup will never work and Fred Hoiberg will wind up being the first coach fired.

It feels like Minnesota’s Karl-Anthony Towns, Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo and Phoenix’s Devin Booker have made the greatest strides, set to earn a new level of stardom. Dirk Nowitzki looks a step slower. Some may say he’s done. Others swear Klay Thompson has forgotten how to shoot since he’s sporting about a 20 percent clip from beyond the arc.

You can make all those statements with a blanket asterisk that it’s far too early to make any real determinations. Instead, all we can do is capitalize on six early trends that will likely shake themselves out, but may be profitable for another few weeks.

Golden State isn’t going to win 63 games, much less 73. This could hold up. Durant’s flurry of 3-pointers against the Thunder produced a 122-96 rout in a performance no one in the league can touch, but that type of output can’t be depended upon. The Warriors lack of rim protection means they’re going to have to outscore teams on a nightly basis, so on nights where the 3-pointer isn’t falling, as was the case against the Lakers on Nov. 4, they’ll be vulnerable. Golden State has started 5-2, but scored 116 or more in four of the wins, a number higher than the NBA-high 112.9 points per game they average.

When they fail to reach that number, the Warriors are 1-2, which could be an issue all season since Zaza Pachulia is struggling to protect the rim and the only guy on the roster who can is named JaVale McGee. Golden State has surrendered a 123-point average in its two defeats and has a few dangerous road games ahead with Denver, Toronto, Boston, Milwaukee and Indiana on tap over the next few weeks. I told you to fade Golden State’s win total and stand by that choice, so I expect a few more eyebrow-raising defeats this month.

Boston can’t defend. The Celtics defensive rating has dipped to last in the league with Al Horford unavailable due to a concussion, and they have allowed 111.8 points per game, currently 28th in the NBA. Only Phoenix and Indiana have been worse. Horford is due back Wednesday, so their ability to defend teams should return to normal. The Celtics are plus-83 with him available and minus-53 without him, so between him and Jae Crowder getting back in the mix, look for the days of Boston giving up 77 points in a half to end. Crowder will be out another week-plus with an ankle injury, but is working to get back for the Warriors visit on Nov. 18. The Wizards, Knicks and Pacers are the next three up between now and next week, so Boston could be vulnerable since all are capable of getting multiple guys going offensively. Brad Stevens’ Celtics have already lost consecutive games and had four separate losing streaks of three games are more last season.

Pau Gasol and LaMarcus Aldridge can’t share the floor. ESPN’s Mark Stein pointed out that the Spurs have been outscored by 25 points in the 113 minutes these two new teammates have been out there at the same time. The sample size is small, but neither has gotten any faster over the years and there are teams capable of significantly exploiting them in the pick-and-roll. San Antonio has played teams like the Clippers, Jazz, Kings, Pelicans and Heat, who happen to have some of the NBA’s bigger, most athletic post threats, so that may be a factor as well. This should shake itself out as the season unfolds and the chemistry between the two improves, especially with Gregg Popovich and his staff on the case. In the short-term, it’s worth keeping an eye on. The Spurs will play the Rockets twice on Wednesday and Saturday, but sandwiched in between will be a meeting with Detroit’s Andre Drummond, the NBA’s top rebounder. Rematches with Sacramento’s DeMarcus Cousins and Miami’s Hassan Whiteside are on tap next week.

Anthony Davis has no help. No denying this one. Despite averaging 30.4 points and 11.9 rebounds per game and opening the season with 95 points in the first two games, the Pelicans are an awful 0-7, joining the 76ers as the lone winless teams remaining. They badly miss point guard Jrue Holiday, who has taken an extended absence to tend to his wife after she underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor. Replacement Tim Frazier is capable offensively, but small, which really limits New Orleans on defense. Ryan Anderson and Eric Gordon are now in Houston, Tyreke Evans remains out, so guys like E’Twaun Moore, Solomon Hill, Langston Galloway and rookie Buddy Hield are filling in. All have holes in their game on the wing, and help isn’t coming any time soon. It’s tough to find yourself fading one of the best players on the planet nightly, but that’s what you should do most of the time until Holiday comes back. They’re 2-5 ATS entering a trip to Sacramento on Tuesday.

Tom Thibodeau won’t transform the Timberwolves overnight. It’s been painfully visible on his face that it hasn’t been a lot of fun watching his young team struggle to get stops and protect the rim. Going in, he knew he wouldn’t have skilled, willing defenders like Noah and Jimmy Butler to build around immediately, but it’s obvious Minnesota’s kids have a lot of work to do to get up to speed. Teams have shot 46 percent against them and have gotten to the line an average of 26 times per game, seventh-highest in the league. Thibs’ concepts are sublime and he’ll mold them into a solid unit, but it hasn’t helped matters nearly that Ricky Rubio got hurt, forcing rookie Kris Dunn into a heightened role. Dunn is going to be excellent and should be a strong defender, but there’s a learning curve ahead. Expect there to be more than a few instances ahead where the tremendously talented Towns, Andrew Wiggins and Zach LaVine wind up losing to inferior competition.

That’s worth keeping in mind since they’ll play two of the Eastern Conference’s worst teams, Brooklyn and Orlando, on the road this week, before opening a four-game home stretch where both L.A. teams, Charlotte and Philadelphia come to town, so they’ll be favored often. Eventually, the Wolves are going to be fine and will probably get it together enough to go on a run that allows them to compete for a playoff spot, so the next few weeks are going to be telling since this team needs to stop the bleeding.

The Wizards and Mavs stink now. While Minnesota’s 1-4 start has been surprising, there are some who feel we should get used to the stumbling that Washington and Dallas have done out of the gate. They’re stuck among the 76ers, Pelicans, Nets and Suns as two of the NBA’s worst teams record-wise through two weeks, but I’m not on board with the opinion that will last. Rick Carlisle and Scott Brooks are talented head coaches who will figure things out and have had obstacles emerge to stunt good starts. The Mavericks have seen Nowitzki limited by illness, Deron Williams dealing with a calf issue and are attempting to get newly acquired Harrison Barnes and Andrew Bogut acclimated. Brooks has had his Wizards relatively whole, but they’ve gone 0-3 on the road and are still looking to put it all together. The Mavs beat the Bucks for their first win before going out on the road for a four-game road swing that spans both coasts over the next week, while the Wizards have the Celtics and Cavs in town, so neither expected resurgence may come soon, but they’ll get things figured out.

    Tuesday's Tip Sheet
    November 8, 2016

Game of the Night – Suns at Blazers (-7 ½, 218) – 10:05 PM EST

Phoenix is playing an exciting brand of basketball with its three-headed backcourt of former Kentucky standouts. Eric Bledsoe, Devin Booker, and Brandon Knight are all averaging double-figures, led by Booker’s 23 points per game. The Suns picked up their first win of the season following an 0-4 start by holding off the Blazers in overtime, 118-115 on Bledsoe’s buzzer-beating three-pointer last Wednesday. Phoenix owns a 2-5 mark through seven games, coming off Sunday’s 119-108 defeat to the Lakers.

The Blazers are back home following a 2-1 road trip, capped off by Sunday’s 100-94 victory at Memphis as C.J. McCollum scored a season-high 37 points for Portland. After tonight’s game, the Blazers hit the highway once again to face the Clippers in Los Angeles in a revenge spot for a home loss on October 27. Portland has lost twice at the Moda Center since beating Utah in the season opener, as the Blazers have lost two of the top teams in the West (Clippers and Warriors).

Both teams have been strong OVER clubs so far, each registering a 5-2 mark to the OVER through seven games. Phoenix has allowed at least 106 points in all seven contests, while Portland has topped the 100-point mark in all seven games.

    Playoff Rematch

The Cavaliers (6-0 SU, 2-4 ATS) have swept the Hawks out of the playoffs each of the past two years, as the two teams hook up tonight in Cleveland. In spite of not losing a game this season, the defending champions have failed to cover in four consecutive contests, including barely escaping the 76ers as 12 ½-point road favorites in Saturday’s 102-101 win. In the last four ATS losses, Cleveland has been listed as a favorite of 9 ½ points or more, as the Cavs opened as 8 ½-point chalk against the Hawks tonight.

Atlanta (4-2 SU, 4-2 ATS) will be without sharpshooter Kyle Korver tonight, who is out following the birth of his child. The Hawks own a dreadful 1-7 ATS record the last eight matchups against the Cavaliers.

    Home Warriors

Who would have thought the rebuilding Nets would defend their home court at the Barclays Center so well? Brooklyn has covered three of four home games as an underdog, including victories over Detroit and Indiana. The Nets fell short against the Hornets on Friday, 99-95, but cashed as 6 ½-point ‘dogs. Tonight, Brooklyn welcomes in Minnesota, who had high expectations to start the season, but have begun 1-4, including an 0-3 record away from the Target Center. The Wolves have won four of the last five road meetings with the Nets, as Minnesota is listed as a four-point favorite this evening.

    Gold Standard

The Lakers have quickly moved on from the Kobe Bryant era as Los Angeles has started 4-3 this season. To put things in perspective, the Lakers didn’t win their fourth game last season until mid-December, as Los Angeles is coming off outright victories as double-digit underdogs against Atlanta and Golden State. The Lakers held off the Suns on Sunday night, 119-108 in their first opportunity in the favorite role to improve to 5-1 ATS this season. The Mavericks invade Staples Center tonight coming off their first win of the season as Dallas has won 10 straight meetings against Los Angeles since the start of the 2013-14 season.

    End of the Road

The Nuggets have been impressive away from Pepsi Center this season, posting a 4-1 ATS on the road, including a resounding 123-107 blowout of Boston as seven-point underdogs on Sunday. Denver dropped 42 first quarter points at Boston one night after scoring just 44 first half points in a loss at Detroit. The Nuggets travel to Memphis to face a Grizzlies team that closes out a four-game homestand after losing the last two contests to the Clippers and Blazers. Following three OVERS to start the season, the Grizzlies are riding a four-game UNDER streak, while not eclipsing the 94-point mark during this current stretch.

    Not So Easy

The Pelicans remain in northern California following last night’s 10-point loss to Golden State to fall to 0-7 on the season. New Orleans actually cashed as 17-point underdogs for only its second cover of the season, both coincidentally coming against the Warriors. The Pelicans head to Sacramento as the Kings are back home following 1-4 SU/ATS road trip, capped off by a 96-91 win at Toronto on Sunday as seven-point underdogs. Sacramento has topped the 96-point mark only twice this season in eight tries, while trying to avenge a four-game sweep by New Orleans last season.

Mark Cuban: Dispute with ESPN rooted in automated content
    November 8, 2016

DALLAS (AP) Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban says his decision to revoke the credentials of two ESPN writers who cover his team was driven partly by concern that automated game reports could eventually replace human-generated content.

Cuban said Monday that he banned Marc Stein and Tim MacMahon from Mavericks home games to bring attention to the issue of companies using automation in sports coverage.

The Associated Press, in a partnership with Automated Insights, produces automated stories on minor league baseball but does not use the technology for most of its sports coverage. The AP has at least one reporter at all games in the four major professional sports and most major college football and basketball games.

''Maybe I will be wrong but I see a direct path from the trends in coverage of games we are seeing over the last couple years to the automation of reporting on games and the curation of related content,'' Cuban wrote in an email to the AP. ''This isn't a knock on wire services or their reporters. They are valued and valuable in sports coverage.''

The billionaire who made his fortune through internet technology said his action wasn't prompted by ESPN's plan to cover the Mavericks, which he said he wasn't changing.

Cuban said he responded after learning that ESPN was relying on wire services for game coverage on 19 NBA teams. Barry Bedlan, AP's sports product manager, said ESPN ''has relied on us for years.''

''Nothing has changed from our perspective and there are no plans to change that,'' Bedlan said.

Cuban said he was responding to what he considers a disturbing trend of reporters being replaced by machines.

''While it may seem counterintuitive to ban someone from covering us as a way of stopping automation, it really was my only option,'' Cuban said. ''As is evident by the AP partnership with Automated Insights, it's not if but when.''

ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz declined to comment on Cuban's claims, referring to a statement Sunday when the network said it was ''committed to thoroughly covering the Mavs and the NBA.'' A league spokesman didn't return a message seeking comment Monday.

MacMahon has covered the Mavericks primarily for several years but has spent more time in other cities this season. Stein joined ESPN as a national NBA writer in 2000 after previously covering the Mavericks for the Dallas newspaper. Both reporters are based in Dallas.

    November 8, 2016

CLEVELAND (AP) Dennis Schroder scored a career-high 28 points and Atlanta handed reigning NBA champion Cleveland its first loss of the season, 110-106 on Tuesday night.

Cleveland (6-1) cut a 96-81 deficit early in the fourth quarter to 101-97 on LeBron James' basket with 3:14 to play. The Hawks scored the next six points, but 3-pointers by James and Kyrie Irving made it 106-103 with 48 seconds left.

Paul Milsap's basket pushed the lead to five, but Kevin Love converted a three-point play with 25 seconds remaining. Bazemore's jumper from the corner with 7 seconds left put the game away.

Bazemore scored 25 points while Millsap added 21. Dwight Howard, who received four stitches for a bloody lip in the first half, had 17 rebounds.

Irving led Cleveland with 29 points. Love added 24 while James, who scored two points in the first half, had 23.

    ---

    NETS 119, TIMBERWOLVES 110

NEW YORK (AP) - Brook Lopez scored 26 points and Brooklyn kept Minnesota winless on the road.

The Nets shot 55.3 percent from the field and had eight players with at least nine points, a surprisingly easy offensive performance against a young Wolves team that clearly hasn't yet grasped Tom Thibodeau's defensive schemes.

Trevor Booker added 15 points and Sean Kilpatrick had 14 for the Nets.

Andrew Wiggins scored a career-high 36 points for the Wolves, making a career-best six 3-pointers. Karl-Anthony Towns had 21 points, but scoring wasn't the problem for Minnesota.

The Wolves are 0-4 on the road and just 1-5 overall.

It was close most of the way, neither team having much luck stopping the other, and the Nets' lead was just two after Wiggins' jumper with 56 seconds left. Bojan Bogdanovic then made a 3-pointer with 37 seconds to go for a 115-110 lead, and Isaiah Whitehead and Bogdanovic closed it out with free throws.

    ---

    GRIZZLIES 108, NUGGETS 107

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Marc Gasol scored on an inbounds pass from Vince Carter at the buzzer to lift Memphis.

Gasol's basket came over Emmanuel Mudiay on a high-arcing pass from Carter underneath the Memphis goal. When Carter inbounded the ball there were 0.7 seconds left.

Gasol had 19 points for the Grizzlies, who had lost two straight, while Zach Randolph added 16.

Mudiay had 23 points and Danilo Gallinari added 21 for the Nuggets.

Mudiay appeared to have led the Nuggets to a victory when he stripped the ball from Mike Conley and converted a fastbreak layup with 7.9 seconds left.

But Conley came up with a steal in the closing seconds and drove the length of the court before the ball was knocked out of bounds by Denver with 0.7 seconds to go.

The Grizzlies went up 83-76 early in the fourth quarter on a twisting layup by Jarell Martin and led by 95-88 following a driving layup by Andrew Harrison midway through the quarter.

But the Nuggets battled back to take their first lead of the final period, 99-98, on a 3-pointer by Nikola Jokic, with 4:27 left.

    Wednesday’s six-pack

NFL trends with Week 10 hovering on the horizon……

    — Cleveland is 6-15-1 in its last 22 games as an underdog.

    — Dallas Cowboys won/covered their last seven games.

    — Washington covered nine of its last 12 games.

    — Buccaneers are 3-9 vs spread in their last 12 games.

    — Jaguars are 6-13-1 in last 20 games as a home underdog.

    — Cincinnati is 21-10-3 vs NFC teams; Giants are 5-1 vs the AFC.

    Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

One personal note before I start today; two people who I thought were friends of mine stopped talking to me during the last few months because of the Presidential election— I wouldn’t vote for the person they support.

I didn’t and still don’t understand that: I dislike both candidates, so I lost two “friends” for being impartial. Guess they weren’t friends after all. So be it. Life is too short for such BS.

    On to mid-week musings……..

    13) NFL teams are 17-9 vs spread this year in the game before their bye week; they’re 9-5-2 vs spread coming off a bye.

    12) Cincinnati Bengals are 1-12 in their last 13 visits to New Jersey, 0-3 against the Giants, 1-9 against Jets. They started this season in the Garden State with a 23-22 against the Jets.

    11) Replay official in the San Jose State-Boise State game Saturday night was an actual rocket scientist, much like Carrot Top’s dad— the madcap comedian’s dad worked for NASA.

    10) Yoenis Cespedes opted out of the last two years of his, 2-year, $47.5M deal with the Mets, so he thinks he can do better than that.

How much money do you really need? Unless he does not like playing for the Mets, I’d take their $47.5M and be happy. By renegotiating, he is helming his agents more than he his helping himself.

    9) Showtime’s supposed documentary on Ben Simmons was a major disappointment; it was more of an infomercial than a documentary.

How do you do a 90-minute movie about a basketball player and not talk to his high school or college coach? I don’t care what his parents or his hangers-on think; none of them will ever utter a discouraging word, lest they offend the meal ticket.

Ben Simmons made becoming a multi-millionaire sound like quite a pain in the butt— lot of people wouldn’t mind changing places with him.

    8) SEC West is 9-1 vs SEC East this year, with only loss Kentucky’s win over Mississippi State.

    7) Colorado Rockies hired Bud Black as manager, Arizona hired Torey Lovullo. Glad to see the Rockies hire a former pitcher as their manager- they’ve got decent young talent.

    6) Miami Dolphins haven’t turned ball in their last three games, first that has happened in 19 years- those three games were all at home- their next two games are in southern California. Dolphins are 0-3 on the road this year.

    5) Queens College 75, VCU 73— College hoop teams play these exhibitions against teams they’re not supposed to lose to; this is the only one I’ve seen so far this fall where the D-I team lost.

    4) NFL favorites of 7+ points this year are 17-10-1 vs spread.

    3) Ironic that the Buffalo Bills played this Monday night, the night before Election Day. The Pagula family bought the Bills a few years ago, keeping the franchise in western New York.

Their main competition for buying the Bills back then?

    Donald Trump.

    2) Comedian Don Rickles turned 90 years old this week, so congrats to him on that: I never thought insulting people was all that funny, but people seem to like him.

1— I’m convinced that running a marathon isn’t healthy; no way is running 26 miles at one time good for you. Remember, the person in ancient mythology who made the marathon famous ran 26 miles to deliver an important message- as soon as he delivered the message, he collapsed and died.

If he had stopped on the way and had a burger and fries, he would have survived. Maybe had a milkshake, too.
