    November 7, 2016

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) CJ McCollum matched his career high with 37 points, scoring 16 points in the fourth quarter to help the Portland Trail Blazers beat the Memphis Grizzlies 100-94 on Sunday.

McCollum also matched his career best with six 3-pointers. Damian Lillard added 19 points and seven assists, and Maurice Harkless finished with 18 points. Portland has won two straight.

Marc Gasol led Memphis with 21 points, and Mike Conley added 16 points and seven assists, They have lost two straight, both at home.

Zach Randolph had 15 points and seven rebounds, and Vince Carter and Tony Allen scored 11 points each.

The game was close with 13 lead changes and 12 ties before Portland pulled away late. McCollum had 10 straight Portland points during one stretch to put the game away.

    JAZZ 114, KNICKS 109

NEW YORK (AP) - Gordon Hayward scored 28 points in his season debut, George Hill had 23 points and nine assists, and Utah beat New York.

Hayward had been sidelined since breaking his right ring finger in training camp. He led the team in scoring last season, averaging nearly 20 points.

Rodney Hood added 18 points to help the Jazz win for the third time in four games. Rudy Gobert and Derrick Favors each had 13.

Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis each had 28 for the Knicks, and Derrick Rose added 18. New York has lost three of four.

    KINGS 96, RAPTORS 91

TORONTO (AP) - DeMarcus Cousins had 22 points and 14 rebounds, Rudy Gay scored 23 against his former team and Sacramento beat Toronto.

Gay had nine points in the fourth quarter as the Kings (3-5) snapped a four-game losing streak by winning the finale of their five-game road trip.

DeMar DeRozan led the Raptors (4-2) with 23 points, the first time this season he's been held under 30. Kyle Lowry added 15 points for Toronto, which had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Raptors center Jonas Valanciunas sat out with a sore knee.

    MAVERICKS 86, BUCKS 75, OT

DALLAS (AP) - Harrison Barnes scored a career-high 34 points and Dallas won for the first time this season, beating Milwaukee in overtime.

Barnes, who left Golden State to sign a $94 million, four-year contract with the Mavericks in the offseason, has scored at least 30 points twice this season after hitting the mark only once in his four years with the Warriors.

His 20-foot jumper opened the scoring in overtime, and the depleted Mavericks (1-5) never trailed after that. The Bucks scored just one point in the extra period.

The Mavericks played without starters Dirk Nowitzki (right Achilles soreness) and Deron Williams (left calf strain).

J.J. Barea added 21 points for Dallas, including five in overtime.

Jabari Parker led Milwaukee with 16 points, but only two after halftime. Greg Monroe had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Bucks, who had won three straight.

    NUGGETS 123, CELTICS 107

BOSTON (AP) - Emmanuel Mudiay scored 24 of his season-high 30 points in the opening quarter, helping Denver to a big first half against injury-depleted Boston.

Wilson Chandler added 22 points before leaving with a left hamstring injury. Danilo Gallinari scored 16 for the Nuggets, who lost 16 of the previous 18 meetings in Boston.

Isaiah Thomas led the Celtics, tying his season high with 30 points.

Boston was missing starters Jae Crowder (sprained left ankle) and Al Horford (concussion protocol).

Mudiay, who went 0 for 7 from the floor in Denver's double-digit loss at Detroit on Saturday night, shot 9 of 10 in the first quarter and had a season high already as he outscored the Celtics. The Nuggets led 42-23 after one and 77-52 at halftime.

Boston left the floor to a loud chorus of boos.

    LAKERS 119, SUNS 108

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Nick Young scored 22 points, Jordan Clarkson added 18 and Los Angeles moved above .500 for only the second time in nearly three years with a victory over Phoenix.

Two days after their stunning upset of Golden State, the Lakers (4-3) held off the Suns down the stretch despite Devin Booker's career-high 39 points.

Julius Randle scored 18 for the Lakers, and Clarkson hit a 3-pointer with 1:27 left to seal Los Angeles' third victory in its last 14 meetings with the Suns, who have lost five of seven.

Other than its season-opening victory last month, Los Angeles hadn't had a winning record since the franchise was 10-9 on Dec. 6, 2013.

    Monday’s six-pack

Six most popular picks in Week 9 of the Westgate Super Contest in Las Vegas:

    1) Denver Broncos, even (695)- L

    2) Pittsburgh Steelers, even (605)- L

    3) New Orleans Saints, -3.5 (575)- W

    4) Carolina Panthers, -3 (525)- T

    5) Philadelphia Eagles, +2.5 (474)- L

    6) Chiefs -7- L/Titans +5 (472)- L

Season record: 18-35-2- rough year for popular opinions

Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday

Falcons 43, Buccaneers 28— Tampa Bay is now 17-43 in its last 60 home games; they fired Lovie Smith because they didn’t want QB guru Dirk Koetter to leave, but Winston isn’t playing as well now. This was halfway point of season and Tampa hasn’t won a home game. Atlanta is in good shape at 6-3- they haven’t had their bye yet, either. Over is 8-1 in Falcon games.

Chiefs 19, Jaguars 14— Kansas City had 16-yard edge in field position; they started four drives in Jax territory, kicking three FGs, scoring only one TD, and that was on a 23-yard drive, so if you gave the points, thats why you lost. With 8:23 left and KC up 19-7, Jaguars fumbled on 6-inch line as runner was crossing goal line; they scored on their next drive, but fell just short of pulling the upset. Under is 6-1 in Chiefs’ last seven games.

Lions 22, Vikings 16 OT— Three weeks ago, Vikings were 5-0 and on an 18-2 run against the spread, which rarely happens. Now they’re 5-3, their OC quit and both their OT’s are hurt. In this game, Minnesota scored with 0:23 left in regulation to take lead, then Stafford got Lions into position for game-tying 58-yard FG at gun. Vikings’ PK Blair Walsh missed a PAT and had FG blocked- he might not be employed much longer. Every Detroit game has been decided by 7 or less points. Success in the NFL is extremely fragile.

Giants 28, Eagles 23— Wentz threw picks on first two possessions, Giants grabbed 14-0 lead 5:07 into game; in second quarter, after a Philly FG, Pederson passed up FG tries of 40, 23 yards to try and get a first down, failing both times- they also had a FG blocked, then came up empty in the red zone on their last drive. You get ball in red zone six times and score only 20 points, you deserve to lose. If Eagles kick those 2nd quarter FGs, this might’ve been a different ending.

Cowboys 35, Browns 10— Not much to say here; a complete ass-kicking. During Rams’ game, FOX’s Kevin Burkhardt said “Right now, Dallas is best team in the NFC.” His partner John Lynch responded very quickly/skeptically, “Thats what the records say.” Cleveland is horrible.

Credit to Jason Garrett for this: Cowboys are 7-1 vs spread in last eight games as a road favorite- they win games they’re expected to win.

Dolphins 27, Jets 23— Jets scored in last 6:00 to take lead, but Miami ran kick back 96 yards for game-winning TD. This was Miami’s 4th straight home game, with a bye in between; their next two games are in southern California. Greg Gumbel/Trent Green had this game; they are a better crew than Nantz/Simms, and not because of Nantz.

Ravens 21, Steelers 14— This was Baltimore’s first win since September 25 and they’re in first place in AFC North, which is terrible this year. Ravens scored one offensive TD, a 95-yard pass in first quarter- their other TD was on a blocked punt. Bengals are 3-4-1, only half-game out of first place. Roethlisberger was obviously rusty as he returned too soon from his injury. Ravens are 12-3 off their last 15 bye weeks.

Saints 41, 49ers 23— In their last three games, Saints have run 62 more plays than their opponents. NO is now 4-4 after an 0-3 start. Chip Kelly should take Phil Knight’s $10M and go back to Oregon; 49ers are horrendous. Six of last seven SF games went over the total. Niners were outscored 91-23 in second half of their last five games.

Panthers 13, Rams 10— I could go on for a while about the Rams, but right now, I only want to know one thing; has Jeff Fisher’s contract been extended past this year? No one knows.

If it has been, then what he’s doing with Jared Goff is the proper course of action, let the kid learn on the sidelines and they’ll grow together.

If Fisher’s contract hasn’t been extended, then this is unacceptable, holding the franchise hostage so he can get a new deal, because this Case Keenum-led offense is putrid. Fisher makes $7M a year and right now, his team isn’t good. He really doesn’t deserve the extension.

The last 22 times the Rams have had the ball, their offense has outscored the other team’s defense, 10-7. How much bleeping worse could Goff be?

Colts 31, Packers 26— Misleading score; Indy kicked their butts in this game, running opening kick back for a TD, then running another kick back 61 yards later in first half. Over is 7-2 in Colt games this year. If you had Aaron Rodgers at QB, wouldn’t you get him a couple of really fast WRs? Green Bay scored 58 points in its last two games and lost both of them- they’re not athletic enough.

I’m mad because the Rams are 3-5; hell, the Packers have Rodgers and they’re 4-4.

Chargers 43, Titans 35— Ken Whishenhunt almost hung half a hundred on the team that fired him as HC last year, though they did score two defensive TDs. There is a proposition on the ballot in San Diego Tuesday to raise the hotel tax to pay for a new stadium for the Chargers; it needs 66.7% to pass, but if it gets over 50%, then the stadium is in limbo. Over is 7-2 in Charger games, 6-0 in last six Titan tilts.

Raiders 30, Broncos 20— Oakland ran ball for 218 yards, had 18-yard edge in field position; before this game, most rushing yards Denver had allowed was 157. In their first eight games, Denver’s defense scored three TDs, created field position for 10 TDs where scoring drive was less than 60 yards. Broncos’ average starting position here was their own 19-yard line, worst in NFL this week. Oakland is 7-2 and atop AFC West, with second-best record in AFC.

In baseball news, Colorado Rockies will name Bud Black their new manager Monday morning. Interesting that a former manager willl manage the Rockies, given the problems pitches have had pitching in high altitude.

    November 8, 2016

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Stephen Curry made an NBA-record 13 3-pointers on the way to 46 points, grabbing back the spotlight from new Golden State star Kevin Durant in the Warriors' 116-106 victory over the winless New Orleans Pelicans on Monday night.

Curry's NBA-record streak of 157 games with a 3 was snapped in his last game, 117-97 road loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The two-time reigning MVP hit 13 of 17 3-point attempts in his seventh career game with double digit 3-pointers and shot 16 for 26 overall. He raised his right arm and pounded his chest, then let out a ''Whoo!'' when he reached the record with 2:23 to go.

It was his first 40-point performance this season after he led the NBA with 13 such games last season. Fans chanted ''M-V-P!''

Durant finished with 22 points and Klay Thompson had 24 as the Splash Brothers looked far more in sync from long range at last.

    ---

    CLIPPERS 114, PISTONS 80

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Chris Paul scored 24 points and made five of the Clippers' season-high 13 3-pointers in their 11th consecutive victory over Detroit.

Andre Drummond had 15 points and 13 rebounds to lead Detroit, which shot 37 percent and made just 4 of 12 3-point attempts in its worst loss of the young season.

J.J. Redick added 20 points, including three 3-pointers and all five of his free throws for the Clippers, who shot 54 percent for the game. Blake Griffin just missed a triple-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists.

Paul made 8 of 10 field goals, 3 of 4 free throws and had eight assists and six rebounds for the Clippers in a game featuring the NBA's two top-ranked defenses.

    ---

    ROCKETS 114, WIZARDS 106

WASHINGTON (AP) - James Harden set aside a rough first quarter to finish with 32 points and 15 assists to lead Houston.

Washington's John Wall broke the franchise record for career assists before getting ejected in the final minute.

Harden shot just 1 for 4 and had five turnovers in the opening period, which ended with Washington ahead 30-23. But he got more and more involved at the offensive end and scored eight consecutive Houston points in one stretch of the fourth quarter, including half of a 12-0 run that gave the Rockets a 106-95 lead with a little more than 3 1/2 minutes left.

This was his fourth consecutive game with at least 30 points and 10 assists for Harden, who entered the day leading the NBA in assists at 12.3 per game and fourth in scoring average at 31.5 points.

    ---

    HORNETS 122, PACERS 100

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Kemba Walker had 24 points and 10 assists to help Charlotte to their best start in franchise history.

The Hornets (5-1) scored on their first 12 possessions and led by as many as 21 points in the first quarter.

Charlotte tied a 23-year franchise record with 75 points in the first half on 56.5 percent shooting. The team's starters were 17 of 25 from the field as the Hornets built a 20-point halftime lead.

Charlotte scored 35 points off 18 Indiana turnovers.

Spencer Hawes had 13 points and 13 rebounds and Cody Zeller chipped in with 13 points.

C.J. Miles led the Pacers with 23 points, while Al Jefferson had 12 points and nine rebounds in his return to Charlotte.

    ---

    JAZZ 109, 76ERS 84

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Derrick Favors had 16 points and 14 rebounds and Rodney Hood scored 18 points to lead Utah over winless Philadelphia.

Gordon Hayward scored 20 points in the second game of his return since he broke his right ring finger in training camp. He led the team in scoring last season, averaging nearly 20 points per game.

The Jazz won their second straight game on the road and cruised against a Sixers team again mired at the bottom of the NBA standings. The Sixers have lost 43 straight games in October and November. The Sixers last won a game in either of those two months on Nov. 22, 2013, against Milwaukee.

The Sixers are 0-6 for the third straight season and have lost 10 straight dating to last season.

Jahlil Okafor led the Sixers with 15 points.

    ---

    THUNDER 97, HEAT 85

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Enes Kanter had 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead Oklahoma City.

Victor Oladipo scored 17 points, rookie Domantas Sabonis had a season-high 15 to go with 10 rebounds, and Russell Westbrook added 14 points and 11 assists for the Thunder. Oklahoma City improved to 6-1, the best seven-game start for the franchise since moving to Oklahoma City in 2008.

Miami's Hassan Whiteside, who entered averaging 20 points and 14.2 rebounds, finished with five points on 1-for-9 shooting and 12 rebounds.

James Johnson led Miami with 18 points. The Heat shot just 36.9 percent.

    ---

    BULLS 112, MAGIC 80

CHICAGO (AP) - Jimmy Butler scored 20 points and Taj Gibson had 16 points and 11 rebounds for Chicago.

Dwyane Wade scored 16 points and Doug McDermott finished with 11 for Chicago, which had dropped three straight. Wade went 7 for 12 from the field in 25 minutes.

Orlando had won three straight, but it played listless defense as Chicago pulled away in the third quarter. Aaron Gordon scored 15 points for the Magic, and Evan Fournier added 13 on 6-for-12 shooting.

Butler was a perfect 10 for 10 as the Bulls went 25 for 31 at the free throw line, compared to 5 for 6 for the Magic.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Happy Election Day, people…….

I had originally set today aside for some thoughts on our Presidential election, but then it dawned on me that no one gives a rat’s ass what I think about politics, so instead……some baseball knowledge to ponder, as we head into the offseason………

(Quick reminder that college basketball starts Friday and WE LOVE college hoop here at ***************. So keep logging in every day)

This information is courtesy of the great Bill James Baseball Handbook, which came in the mail last week:

    13) Amount of defensive shifts in 2014: 13,299. In 2016: 28,074.
