Daily Sports Roundup

Saturday, March 13

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: College hoops tournaments begin to wrap up, while the Wizards play host to the Magic, and the Sharks meet the Panthers.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up seven games on Saturday, with Detroit at Atlanta, Denver at Memphis, New York at Dallas, New Jersey at Houston, the Clippers at San Antonio, Toronto at Golden State, and Orlando at Washington. The Magic (46-20 SU, 34-29-3 ATS) rolled to their seventh straight win on Thursday night, blasting Chicago 111-82. Vince Carter had a game-high 23 points for Orlando in that win, while Matt Barnes was good for 14 points. However, the Magic are 0-2 against the Wizards so far this year, losing 104-97 on January 8 and 92-91 on February 5. Orlando was favored in both of those games, which were both UNDER results.

As well, Saturday's college basketball schedule features either semi-final or championship matchups in 16 conference tournaments. Reaching the semi-final stage on Saturday are the ACC, Atlantic 10, Southeastern, and Big Ten events, while championship games will be played in each of the Mid-Eastern, America East, Southland, Southwestern, Western Athletic, Mid-American, Big West, Mountain West, Conference USA, Pacific-10, Big 12, and Big East conferences.

Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are nine games on the NHL's schedule for Saturday, with Chicago at Philadelphia, Buffalo at Detroit, Phoenix at Carolina, Boston at Montreal, New Jersey at the Islanders, Edmonton at Toronto, St. Louis at Columbus, Ottawa at Vancouver, and Florida at San Jose. The 43-14-9 Sharks exploded for six third-period goals in an 8-5 win over Nashville in their last game on Thursday night. Joe Pavelski and Dany Heatley each scored twice for San Jose. The 27-29-10 Panthers were blanked 3-0 in Colorado in their Thursday night matchup, with Tomas Vokoun making 28 saves. Florida and San Jose have not met this season.

Bettor's best friend: Saturday's wagering tips

Lines off the board

Los Angeles Clippers at San Antonio Spurs – Eric Gordon (leg) has missed the last three games (0-3 ATS) and is doubtful.

St. Louis Blues at Columbus Blue Jackets – Rick Nash (lower body) did not play in the team’s last game and is questionable.

New Jersey Devils at New York Islanders – The Devils played on Friday.

Line to keep an eye on

The total in the Raptors-Warriors matchup escalated from an opener of 226 to 227.5. Golden State has played to two consecutive overs and the last two meetings of this series have gone over.

Weather to watch

The rain is expected to subside but the course at the WGC-CA Championship will still be affected by wind on Saturday. The forecast calls for wind anywhere from 13-18 mph during the third round. Scores haven’t been as low as projected and the wind was definitely causing a few putts to come up short on Friday.

Who’s hot

Vermont has won 9-of-10 and are 5-0 ATS in their last five lined games.

Chicago is 7-3 SU in their last 10 games and opened as an underdog to the Coyotes.

The Magic have won 9-of-10 games and are 7-3 ATS during that stretch.

Who’s not

The Raptors are 3-7 SU and 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games.

Rhode Island is 3-7 ATS in its last 10 outings.

The Florida Panthers are 3-7 SU in their last 10 and have only covered the puckline twice in those seven losses.

Key stat

0 – Number of teams to lose the first game of their conference tournament and go on to win the national title. This statistic doesn’t bode well for Syracuse or Villanova.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

New Orleans’ forward James Posey will miss Friday’s game versus the Nuggets. Posey is a key reserve in the Hornets rotation and while he hasn’t been very productive from a statistic perspective this season (5.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg) and isn’t a spread-mover, he is one of the team’s top defenders.

Games of the day

Edmonton Oilers at Toronto Maple Leafs (-205, 5.5)

Ottawa Senators at Vancouver Canucks (-175, 5.5)

Notable quotable

"Right now, I'm playing for something bigger. I don't even care about the Rookie of the Year. Forget it. Whoever gets it, who cares? Both of their teams suck, so whoever gets it, it doesn't matter."

-- Bucks’ rookie point guard Brandon Jennings on winning the Rookie of the Year title while also referring to Tyreke Evans of the Kings and Stephen Curry of the Warriors.

Tips and notes

- It’s never a good sign when a team’s best player begins to vent. Apparently, Knicks center David Lee has grown tired of playing out of position. He said, "A lot of times I'm playing a guy five inches bigger than I am and 50 pounds heavier. I'm doing my best down there at 6'9." New York was out-rebounded by 19 against San Antonio while Tim Duncan and Antonio McDyess had a field day down low.

- Vermont forward Evan Fjeld might have his mind elsewhere in the America East Conference championship game on Saturday. Fjeld lost his mother on Tuesday to cancer. The junior has said that he will play in the game regardless; he averages 10.7 points and 6.1 rebounds for the team.

- Baron Davis is in a sour mood once again. He got benched on Tuesday in Orlando because he missed practice with a stomach problem. Davis said, "If my health caused me to miss a one-hour, walk-around practice, and that determines my position on the team, then I'm not going to be happy." He was back in a starting role on Wednesday but only went 4-of-11 from the floor. GM Mike Dunleavy was fired this week and clearly the Clips are in turmoil, having lost five in a row SU and ATS.

- Monta Ellis returned for the Warriors on Thursday but that could have thrown off the team chemistry, again. "We're looking for consistency, and it's not going to be there," Stephen Curry said. "What makes it tough is that we're playing with a different shorthanded group every night, and it's tough to find chemistry." Golden State still has no big men available and has been outrebounded 17 and 19 in its last two games. Even with Ellis’s return, the Warriors still have three D-League call-ups in the rotation.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Clippers at San Antonio Spurs

The elderly Spurs have used 21 different lineups this season. In between injuries and players’ resting, Greg Popovich has had to be creative when constructing his starting five.

Since Tony Parker went down two games ago, Manu Ginobili has been thrust into a starting role. Having almost always been a sixth man, Ginobili’s presence has likely caused some offensive chemistry problems for San Antonio.

With the Spurs playing their fourth game in six days, and the ever-changing starting lineup, this team is going to concentrate on what it does best – take care of the ball and play defense.

San Antonio held the high-flying Knicks to 87 points on Wednesday and have played to the under in four consecutive games. Expect the Spurs to keep the hapless Clippers under the 90-point mark on Saturday, as they have twice already this season.

Pick: Under

Toronto Raptors at Golden State Warriors (+1.5, 227.5)

Despite a lineup that features three D-League call-ups and a starting center that stands at 6-9, the Warriors are still playing competitive basketball.

Golden State led by 11 after three quarters of play on Thursday against the Trail Blazers, but only managed to put up nine fourth-quarter points in the 115-110 loss.

"We went cold at the wrong time, what can I tell you”, coach Don Nelson said. "We ended having a team out there that hadn't been together very much. It was probably a combination of things."

The Warriors’ rotations haven’t played together much but are still exerting maximum effort. Golden State has covered in two straight and five of its last seven games.

The Raptors have dropped seven of its last 10 outings (2-8 ATS) and haven’t won in Oakland in six years. The Warriors are 5-0 ATS at home in their last five versus Toronto and 8-2 ATS during the last 10 in the series.

Pick: Warriors

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida Panthers at San Jose Sharks (-290, 5.5)

San Jose extended its three-game winning streak with an 8-5 win over the Nashville Predators Thursday night. The Sharks were trailing 4-2 heading into the third period but erupted for six goals in the final frame.

"We won the game and that's great, but that's not what I focus on," coach Todd McLellan told reporters after the game. "We were clearly outworked, outplayed, out-hustled for two periods, and that's very disappointing."

The Sharks were working off some rest after not taking the ice since a 2-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets last weekend. San Jose’s defense limited the Blue Jackets to 22 shots in that game and, before Thursday’s contest, had played under the total in six of its last seven games.

Bettors should expect the Sharks’ blueline to return to form this weekend.

Pick: Under

St. Louis Blues at Columbus Blue Jackets

The Blues are quietly becoming the NHL’s cash cow, winning six of their last seven games with four of those victories coming while St. Louis was priced as plus-money with sportsbooks.

The Blues’ most recent win was a 2-1 shootout victory over the New York Islanders Thursday night. They managed to pepper Isles goaltender Martin Biron with 36 shots on goal but snuck just one goal past him in regulation.

"But they put us under some pressure and we had to really get ourselves up to speed from a defensive aspect,” coach Davis Payne told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “Once we got to that point, probably the execution offensively wasn't what we'd like. ... We put a lot of pucks on net, but we didn't generate many second opportunities.”

The lack of offensive pop is a big change from what St. Louis did during a five-game winning streak last week in which it scored nearly five goals a night. However, in the last two games, the Blues have managed to light the lamp just five total times despite out-shooting their opponents 78-63 during that span.

Goals will be hard to come by when St. Louis meets Columbus, another club struggling to find the back of the net. The Blue Jackets are averaging just over 2.5 goals per game in their past seven outings.

Pick: Under

Hockey Night In Canada betting preview
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edmonton Oilers at Toronto Maple Leafs (-205, 5.5)

The basics

Betting on this game will be the only way to make it interesting as the 29th-place Toronto Maple Leafs host the 30th-place Edmonton Oilers.

The Oilers are 8-21-3 on the road and have won one game away from Rexall Place since December 11.

The Leafs are seven points ahead of the Oilers and have won three of their last four games.

Power outage

The Oilers are 1-16 with the man advantage over their last six games while the Maple Leafs are on an 0-for-30 stretch.

“We’ve got to set it up [the power play] and establish a point shot right away and maybe move the puck a little bit quicker,” Toronto forward Tyler Bozak told the Toronto Star.

Both teams will have their chances. Edmonton has committed 16 penalties over its last two games and Toronto has a league-worst penalty kill at 72.1 percent.

Already spoiled

“You know you're not going to make the playoffs so these are your playoffs and try to be a spoiler," Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney told reporters.

The only thing that can be spoiled between these teams is whether the Oilers or Bruins will draft top prospect Taylor Hall.

"We're much younger, guys are auditioning for next year,” Toronto coach Ron Wilson told the Toronto Star.

Net minding the under

Jeff Deslauriers has played well lately but has had an inconsistent season overall.

"We've seen high levels out of him, but he's got to keep working at it to find that," coach Pat Quinn told reporters.

Jean-Sebastien Giguere has made the most of his time in Toronto, with a 2.47 goals against average, .916 save percentage and two shutouts in eight games.

The under is 3-0 in Edmonton’s last three games started by Deslauriers and 6-2 in games started by Giguere.

Ottawa Senators at Vancouver Canucks (-175, 5.5)

The basics

Canada’s top two teams face off in the late HNIC game.

The Senators have all but secured a playoff spot and are fighting for the Northeast division title. Ottawa has struggled since the Olympic break, winning only one of its five games (1-3-1).

Vancouver leads the Northwest division with 85 points and is firmly entrenched in a playoff spot. The Canucks are 6-2-1 in their last nine games.

Olympic hangover

Ottawa has been flat offensively since the break, averaging just 1.4 goals a game. Brian Elliot continues his solid play with a 2.31 goals against average and has a save percentage of .932 in his last three games.

Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo has a 4.20 goals against average since the Olympics and described his performance against Colorado Tuesday as, “probably the worst I’ve ever played in my career”.

Trend setters

Elliot’s strong play and Ottawa’s inability to score has led to the Senators going under the total in all five games since the break. The under is 13-3-2 in Ottawa’s last 18 games.

Vancouver is tied with San Jose as the highest scoring team in the Western conference, averaging 3.24 goals a game. They have gone over the total in eight consecutive games.

The Canucks are led offensively by Henrik and Daniel Sedin, who trail only Washington’s Alex Ovechkin for the highest points per game average in the NHL.

Where are we?

Ottawa is on a quick tour of Western Canada, playing Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver on a three-game, five-day trip. Ottawa closes out the season by playing 11 of 16 games away from home.

The Canucks will play their first game at home since January 27 and have won five straight games at GM Place. Vancouver went 8-5-1 on its league-record, 14-game road trip and open a five-game homestand Saturday night.
