Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Gonzaga 91, BYU 75-- Nine WCC tourney titles in last 12 years for Zags.

-- BYU has a hoop player named Skyler Halford who was born in 1989.

-- You watch teams win conference tourneys now and people are taking selfies on the court and you realize the world has changed a lot in a short period of time.

-- I'm watching Law and Order reruns and Jennifer Garner has a small role in a 1996 episode; now she is in every other commercial on ballgames.

-- Tough break for the Blue Jays; Marcus Stroman tore his ACL Tuesday; he had an 11-6 record last year. Good young pitcher.

-- This is the current state of the Knicks: their best player is Alexey Shved.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud....

13) Rams traded Sam Bradford for Nick Foles Tuesday, in an unusual swap of QBs that has people in Philadelphia scratching their heads- there are draft picks involved too but the Rams finally have stability at QB while the Eagles have their fans mumbling.

12) Bradford has banked $65M in five years and has an 18-30-1 record as a starter; his last game action was Week 7 in 2013- he's pretty good, but he always gets hurt. He wouldn't take a pay cut this winter, so for now, Bradford is an Eagle.

Philly offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur was OC for the Rams when they drafted Bradford in 2010; that was a couple operations ago.

11) In last week, the Eagles traded their best RB, their starting QB and let their best WR walk in free agency. If this turns into a fiasco, Chip Kelly will get fired ansd have his pick of college jobs to choose from, while the Eagles will be left holding the bag.

10) So you're Bob Stoops; you make $4M a year coaching football at Oklahoma. You wake up one morning to find out that some racist jackasses made a video that has gone viral, and now one of your recruits has already de-committed. This is a potential disaster and no one remotely connected to your program did anything wrong; thats coaching in this day and age.

The two jerks who made the racist video are thrown out of school, your team makes a damage control-type video of its own and if this goes away without too many more recruits jumping ship, you've earned your salary today.

9) Saints traded Jimmy Graham to Seattle, trying to lessen their salary cap woes; this makes the Seahawks a better passing team, but they're going to have to re-build their offensive line, since center Max Unger is now a Saint.

8) Lions replaced Ndamukong Suh with Haloti Ngata; Jim Caldwell used to work for the Ravens, so thats the connection.

7) Jake Locker retired from football at age 26; he was drafted by the Angels a long time ago, so the possibility of an attempt at baseball remains. Disaster for Tennessee, which also had the Vince Young debacle-- finding a QB is hard to do.

6) A woman in Indiana had her car stolen, with her dead husband's ashes still in the car; this is almost as bad as stealing a car and having a little kid in a car seat staring at you. Captain Obvious checks in: not all criminals are geniuses.

5) Robert Morris 66, St Francis 63-- Terriers were 9-22 on the foul line, Colonials hit 8-16 on the arc. Shooters are always in demand.

4) Utah has passed a law that allows firing squads, in case the lethal injection stuff isn't available. How many people do you have to execute to run out of it? Seems to me a firing squad would be better punishment than having a needle stuck in your arm.

3) Dodgers pay Carl Crawford $21M a year and he isn't on a roster in my 16-team, 25-player fantasy league. If we ever draw up an All-Star team of players who stole $$, Crawford is going to be a starter, though he won't bad leadoff, since he doesn't like it.

2) Seton Hall is 0-6 as a Big East favorite this year; they lost five of the six games SU and won the sixth by a point over last-place Creighton. I'm told Kevin Willard is a good guy, but Robert Morris winning last night could make Andy Toole a hot name in the coaching carousel and make Willard's seat a little warmer.

Manhattan's coach Steve Masiello is also going to go to a bigger conference soon.

1) Thursday/Friday are the two best college basketball days of the year; the days are full of games; meaningful, exciting games, fromn noon til 2am. Now that I'm retired, no need to call in sick anymore either-- ha!!!!

Big East tournament Round 1: NCAAB betting cheat sheet

Marquette Golden Eagles vs. Seton Hall Pirates (-1)

Leading scorer Matt Carlino missed time with a concussion late in the season but returned for the last four games and hit 10 3-pointers over his final two regular-season contests. "I don't think anyone can map out a season before the year and it goes that way," Carlino said to the media after the win against DePaul. "So no, it's not what I expected, but it's been a good season. We have basketball left to play, so it's not over yet."

The last six weeks for Seton Hall have featured, among other things, a six-game losing streak, one starter leaving the team and the Pirates' leading scorer getting suspended. The Pirates have dropped two straight heading into this tournament and likely need to string together some victories to potentially earn a postseason berth of any kind.

TRENDS:

* Under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
* Underdog is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
* Pirates are 4-1 ATS in their last five neutral site games.
* Golden Eagles are 1-6 ATS in their last seven games overall.

Creighton Bluejays vs. DePaul Blue Demons (+3.5)

The last win for the Bluejays came on the Blue Demons' home court on Feb. 24, when they posted a 75-62 triumph behind James Milliken's 18 points. That served as a measure of revenge for Creighton, which lost at home to DePaul on Jan. 7. Creighton's top rebounder is 6-2 G Devin Brooks (4.8) and the Bluejays have been outrebounded by 28 during their current three-game slide.

The Blue Demons ended their regular season with a 58-48 loss to Marquette, shooting 32.8 percent from the floor, 3-of-18 from the arc and a paltry 3-of-6 from the foul line, not to mention a dozen turnovers. "We did miss some easy shots near the basket and in the lane," DePaul coach Oliver Purnell said to reporters. "In a game like that, you need that. Couple that with a few turnovers that we had versus their 2-2-1 or wide and high zone, that was our undoing."

TRENDS:

* Under is 5-0 in the last five meetings.
* Under is 5-0 in Blue Demons last five overall.
* Bluejays are 1-4 ATS in their last five neutral site games.
* Blue Demons are 1-10 ATS in their last 11 neutral site games.

Big Ten tournament Round 1: NCAAB betting cheat sheet

Penn State Nittany Lions vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers (+2)

A loss to Penn State just over a month ago set off Nebraska’s longest losing streak in recent memory. The 12th-seeded Cornhuskers, who kick off the Big Ten tournament Wednesday in first-round action at Chicago versus the No. 13 seed Nittany Lions, improved to 5-5 in conference play following a 76-60 victory over Northwestern on Feb. 3. Nebraska dropped a 56-43 decision at Penn State four days later, beginning an eight-game skid that is the school’s worst since a nine-game slide in 2002-03.

The only single-digit losses over that span came in two games against Maryland, which downed the Cornhuskers 64-61 on Sunday. The Nittany Lions ended their own run of futility at Minnesota over the weekend, snapping a six-game losing streak when Big Ten scoring champion D.J. Newbill scored 12 of his 31 points over the last 5 ˝ minutes, including the game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer, to give his team its first win since defeating Nebraska. The 79-76 victory also allowed Penn State to win a close game in league action for a change after losing its previous five games decided by four points or fewer.

TRENDS:

* Nittany Lions are 1-4 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Favorite is 5-2 ATS in the last 7 meetings.
* Nittany Lions are 0-5 ATS in their last five neutral site games.
* Over is 5-1 in Cornhuskers last six overall.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers (-10.5)

Outside a 5-2 stretch that started with an 89-80 win over Rutgers on Jan. 17, Minnesota can relate to the struggles of its new Big Ten rival. After losing at the buzzer over the weekend and missing out on a chance to rest in the first round of the Big Ten tournament, the 11th-seeded Golden Gophers hope to create some momentum at the event Wednesday in Chicago against the Scarlet Knights. Minnesota opened league play with five straight losses and closed it by winning once in its final six games.

“(It was) a little bit fitting that we lose our last regular-season game on a 25-foot challenged shot because it just hasn't quite gone our way this year. I'm not saying we are unlucky, but I don't know if we've been lucky,” Pitino said after the Gophers fell 79-76 at home to Penn State on Sunday, falling to 2-7 in conference games decided by five points or fewer. Rutgers’ inaugural season in the Big Ten has been a forgettable one as the Scarlet Knights followed up their shocking win against Wisconsin on Jan. 11 with 14 straight defeats, resulting in its No. 14 seed. The losing streak is the program’s longest since a 16-game slide during the 1987-88 campaign.

TRENDS:

* Scarlet Knights are 1-7 ATS in their last eight vs. Big Ten.
* Golden Gophers are 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 neutral site games.
* Over is 5-1 in Golden Gophers last six overall.
* Golden Gophers are 5-13 ATS in their last 18 games overall.

SEC tournament Round 1: NCAAB betting cheat sheet

Auburn Tigers vs. Mississippi State Bulldogs (-1)

Antoine Mason will be back in the fold when Auburn begins play in the first round of the SEC Tournament against Mississippi State on Wednesday in Nashville. Mason, the 13th-seeded Tigers' second-leading scorer, missed the final three games of the regular season following the death of his father, former NBA forward Anthony Mason. Auburn went 0-3 without its senior guard to extend its losing streak to six games.

The 12th-seeded Bulldogs were on a lengthy slide of their own before snapping a five-game skid with a 52-43 win over Missouri on Saturday. Craig Sword scored 15 points and Mississippi State held an SEC opponent under 50 points for the first time since 2008 and recorded its most lopsided conference win of the season. The nine-point gap eclipsed a 78-71 victory at Auburn on Jan. 21, which also represents the Bulldogs' best offensive effort in league play.

TRENDS:

* Over is 16-5 in the last 21 meetings.
* Underdog is 9-1-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
* Tigers are 5-20-1 ATS in their last 26 neutral site games.
* Bulldogs are 3-1-1 ATS in their last five vs. Southeastern.

Missouri Tigers vs. South Carolina Gamecocks (-8.5)

The Tigers' youth is one reason for its first losing season since 2006 but one of its newcomers appears to have figured a few things out, as freshman Namon Wright is stepping up the aggression on the offensive end. Including a career-high 28 points in a win over Florida on Feb. 24, Wright has posted four straight double-digit efforts while making 12-of-24 3-pointers. Wright and fellow first-year guard Montaque Gill-Caesar - who ranks third on the team in scoring behind Johnathan Williams III and Clark - missed the previous meeting with South Carolina due to a suspension.

Only Missouri struggled more from the field than the Gamecocks among SEC teams and only Mississippi State was worse from beyond the arc, but improvement in that area has fueled South Carolina's slight turnaround. Behind Michael Carrera's effort, the Gamecocks shot 51.2 percent in the win over Tennessee and have posted a 49.3 percent mark over their last three games, nearly nine percentage points better than their season average. Leading scorer Duane Notice has hit 9-of-19 triples in that span while senior Tyrone Johnson is averaging 18.7 points on 55.6 percent shooting.

TRENDS:

* Tigers are 1-4 ATS in their last five vs. Southeastern.
* Gamecocks are 0-6 ATS in their last six games following a S.U. win.
* Gamecocks are 4-15 ATS in their last 19 vs. Southeastern.
* Under is 5-0 in Tigers last five overall.

Big 12 tournament Round 1: NCAAB betting cheat sheet

TCU Horned Frogs vs. Kansas State Wildcats (-1.5)

Kansas State has only one way to stretch its streak of NCAA Tournament appearances to six and that is to win the Big 12 tournament title in Kansas City. The eighth-seeded Wildcats open play against ninth-seeded TCU on Wednesday and a dash to the title would require four consecutive victories, including one against top-seeded Kansas on Thursday. The Horned Frogs went 4-14 in conference play but are dangerous enough to knock off the Wildcats.

Kansas State is trying to avoid its first losing season since 2002-03 and the program’s streak of eight straight 20-win seasons is in extreme danger of ending. The Wildcats have issues scoring and the 62.9 average is on pace to be the school’s lowest since a 57.4 mark in the 1982-83 season. TCU has lost three straight games and loaded up on victories during nonconference play before once again struggling to record wins in Big 12 play.

TRENDS:

* Horned Frogs are 5-2 ATS in their last seven vs. Big 12.
* Over is 6-1 in Horned Frogs last seven overall.
* Under is 9-3 in Wildcats last 12 overall.
* Under is 14-6-1 in Wildcats last 21 neutral site games.

Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Texas Longhorns (-10)

There is little margin for error for Texas when it comes to the NCAA Tournament as the seventh-seeded Longhorns open play against 10th-seeded Texas Tech on Wednesday in the Big 12 tournament in Kansas City. Texas is considered a bubble team and a one-and-done in the conference tournament against the last-place team will surely be a death knell. On the other hand, a deep run to the tournament championship game should limit the amount of sweating the Longhorns do on Selection Sunday.

Texas swept Texas Tech in regular season and the Red Raiders lost seven of their last eight games but coach Tubby Smith insists his club is playing better. “Over the last five games, we have made strides,” Smith told reporters. “We are shooting better, we have defended better and we have grown up a lot.” A victory over the Red Raiders would give Longhorns coach Rick Barnes his 15th 20-win campaigns in 17 seasons and would send Texas on to play second-seeded Iowa State.

TRENDS:

* Red Raiders are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Underdog is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Under is 4-0 in Longhorns last four vs. Big 12.
* Red Raiders are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 vs. Big 12.

ACC tournament Round 2: NCAAB betting cheat sheet

ACC tournament action continues from Greensboro, North Carolina Wednesday.

Florida State Seminoles vs. Clemson Tigers (-2)

Xavier Rathan-Mayes took on a bigger role in December after Aaron Thomas was ruled ineligible for the rest of the season and has prospered while also leading the team in assists (4.4). If the Seminoles are to make a run in the tournament, Montay Brandon (11.9 points, team-high 5.6 rebounds) and Devon Bookert (10.3 points), must come up big as well. Bookert has made a team-best 52 from 3-point range and 7-3 Boris Bojanovsky leads the Seminoles with 42 blocks.

Clemson sophomore Jaron Blossomgame averages 13.1 points and 8.2 rebounds this season after being a non factor in the conference tournament last March. Second-leading scorer Donte Grantham (8.9) has shot 26.4 percent from the field the last seven games, but the freshman averaged 12 points in two games against Florida State. Rod Hall chips in with 8.6 points and a team-best 3.4 assists while Landry Nnoko matched his career high by scoring 19 on Saturday.

TRENDS:

* Under is 4-0 in the last four meetings.
* Underdog is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
* Seminoles are 7-1 ATS in their last eight games overall.
* Over is 4-0 in Tigers last four vs. Atlantic Coast.

Pittsburgh Panthers vs. North Carolina State Wolfpack (-4)

The Panthers limp into the program’s second ACC Tournament appearance, losing their final three games by a total of 16 points. “We’re a better team than what we played this last week,” Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon said after the Panthers lost 61-52 Saturday at Florida State. Wednesday’s winner takes on second-seed Duke in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

The Wolfpack have allowed more than 65 points once in their past six games in going 5-1, and rank second in the ACC and 13th nationally with 5.5 blocked shots per game. Trevor Lacey leads N.C. State in scoring and is sixth in the conference in scoring at 16.1 points, scoring 19 points Saturday after going 10-of-37 from the field in his previous three games.

TRENDS:

* Panthers are 0-4 ATS in their last four vs. Atlantic Coast.
* Wolfpack are 6-1 ATS in their last seven games overall.
* Over is 11-5 in Panthers last 16 overall.
* Wolfpack are 22-8-1 ATS in their last 31 neutral site games.

Rockets' C Dwight Howard, Late March

Howard has been progressing well with his knee injury and is hopeful to join the team in the next one-to-three weeks.

NBA roundup: James, Cavs crush Mavs

DALLAS -- LeBron James scored 27 points, and the Cleveland Cavaliers sustained their recent mastery of the Western Conference by slamming the Dallas Mavericks 127-94 Tuesday night at American Airlines Center.

The Cavaliers won for the 12th time in their past 13 games against the deeper West, and they appear to be peaking with the regular season winding down. Cleveland is an NBA-best 22-5 since Jan. 15.

James knocked down 10 of 14 shots, including four of six 3-point attempts, and added eight assists and seven rebounds. He became the Cavaliers' all-team leader in assists, surpassing Mark Price.

Cleveland point guard Kyrie Irving had 22 points, shooting guard J.R. Smith scored 21 points, and power forward Kevin Love recorded his team-best 33rd double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Mavericks forward Chandler Parsons scored a team-high 18 in his second game back since returning from an ankle injury.

Spurs 117, Raptors 107

SAN ANTONIO -- After building a 26-point lead in the third quarter, San Antonio held off a late rally from Toronto to claim its sixth consecutive win.

Power forward Tim Duncan (12 points, 13 rebounds) and small forward Kawhi Leonard (24 points, 11 rebounds) both collected double-doubles, and point guard Tony Parker dropped in a team-high 23 points for the Spurs, who denied the Raptors their first-ever season sweep of San Antonio.

Guards Kyle Lowery and DeMar DeRozan sparked the Raptors' comeback with 29 and 21 points, respectively. Forward Amir Johnson scored 16 points and added 14 rebounds for the Raptors, who had won the first two games on their three-game road trip.

Pacers 118, Magic 86

INDIANAPOLIS -- Reserve guard Rodney Stuckey scored 25 of his game-high and season-high 34 points during Indiana's 59-point first half, and the Pacers defeated Orlando.

Led by Stuckey, the Pacers, who have won a season-best six in a row, got 46 of their 59 first-half points from non-starters. In 18 first-half minutes, Stuckey made nine of 11 field-goal attempts, including five of seven from 3-point range. Stuckey added six rebounds and seven assists. The 118 points were an Indiana season high.

Forward Tobias Harris led Orlando with 22 points.

Pelicans 111, Nets 91

NEW YORK -- Reserve center Alexis Ajinca and forward Quincy Pondexter each scored 17 points, and New Orleans recovered from an early 14-point deficit to rout Brooklyn.

The Pelicans received 16 points apiece from guards Norris Cole and Eric Gordon, 12 points and 13 rebounds from center Omar Asik and an almost non-descript 15 points from forward Anthony Davis, who averaged 33 points over the previous four games.

Center Brook Lopez finished with 15 points and nine rebounds, and guard Jarrett Jack added 15 points for the Nets, who lost their fourth straight home game.

Jazz 87, Knicks 82

SALT LAKE CITY -- Forward Derrick Favors scored 29 points and collected 12 rebounds, and reserve guard Rodney Hood added a career-high 17 points as the Utah beat New York.

Center Rudy Gobert finished with 10 points and 14 rebounds, and guard Joe Ingles chipped in 12 points as the Jazz won for the eighth time in 10 games since the All-Star break.

Guard Alexey Shved scored 21 points and center Andrea Bargnani added 20 to lead New York (12-51). Cole Aldrich added 17 points and 13 rebounds off the bench for the Knicks, who lost their fifth game in a row.

Lakers 93, Pistons 85

LOS ANGELES -- In a matchup between clubs with the longest losing streaks in the NBA, Los Angeles found a way to end its skid. Forward Jordan Hill scored 16 points to lead seven Lakers in double figures, and Los Angeles held off Detroit.

Forwards Wesley Johnson and Ed Davis added 13 points each for the Lakers, who snapped a five-game slide. Los Angeles guard Jeremy Lin had 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while point guard Jordan Clarkson had a career-high eight assists to go along with 10 points.

Forward Greg Monroe scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Pistons, who dropped their seventh in a row. Center Andre Drummond finished with 21 rebounds and 14 points, while guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope had 15 points.

Game of the Day: Clippers at Thunder
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Clippers at Oklahoma City Thunder (-7, 209)

Two of the matchup's biggest stars won't be on the court, but the stakes will be high when Oklahoma City hosts the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday. Both teams are trying to stay afloat in the loaded Western Conference with their star players — Clippers forward Blake Griffin and Thunder forward Kevin Durant — sidelined. The Clippers are fifth in the West while the Thunder are tied with New Orleans for the final playoff spot.

In addition to the absence of Griffin (elbow) and reserve guard Jamal Crawford (calf), Los Angeles point guard Chris Paul has been hobbled by a knee injury, though he managed to dish out 15 assists in Monday's 89-76 home win over Minnesota and is expected to play through it against the Thunder. "It just shows the depth of our team," Paul told reporters. "I don't want to hurt the team, but if I can contribute and help the team, we need all the bodies we can get." The Thunder know the feeling, having been without stars Durant and Russell Westbrook at times this season, and they recently got center Steven Adams back from an eight-game absence with a broken bone in his hand.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN, Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), FSN Okahoma (Oklahoma City)

LINE HISTORY: Oddsmakers opened the Thunder as 6.5 or 7-point faves and the total at 210.

INJURY REPORT: Clippers - PG Chris Paul (Probable, knee), F Blake Griffin (Out indefinitely, elbow), G Jamal Crawford (Out indefinitely, calf). Thunder - F Kevin Durant (Out indefinitely, foot), F Steve Novak (Out indefinitely, appendix).

POWER RANKINGS: Clippers (-11.5) + Thunder (-8) + home court (-3.0) = Clippers -0.5

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (41-23 SU, 28-36 ATS, 27-34-3 O/U): Los Angeles is a far less dynamic team with Griffin (22.5 points, 7.5 rebounds) and Crawford (16.4 points) out and Paul (18.2 points, 10.2 assists) under 100 percent. Guard J.J. Redick (15.1 points) and center DeAndre Jordan (11.2 points, 14.5 rebounds) are the only double-digit scorers healthy, and they combined for 46 points against the Timberwolves. The Clippers don't give up many second-chance points thanks to Jordan, who leads the NBA in rebounding and has grabbed double-digit boards in 57 of 64 games this season.

ABOUT THE THUNDER (35-28 SU, 30-31-2 ATS, 28-35 O/U): Oklahoma City has won 10 of its last 13 despite the gnawing from the injury bug, mostly because Westbrook (27.4 points, 8.3 assists, 7.1 rebounds) has played at an MVP level. Westbrook has recorded triple-doubles in five of his past six games, including 30 points, 17 assists and 11 rebounds in Thursday's 108-104 win over Toronto. Big men Serge Ibaka (14.3 points, 7.9 rebounds) and Enes Kanter (14.3 points, 9.3 rebounds in eight games since being acquired from Utah) also have helped the Thunder stay afloat with Durant and Adams (7.4 points, seven rebounds) sidelined.

TRENDS:

* Clippers are 1-6 ATS in the last seven meetings.
* Thunder are 7-1 ATS in their last eight vs. Western Conference.
* Under is 7-1 in Clippers last eight overall.
* Over is 5-1 in Thunder last six overall.

CONSENSUS: According to Consensus, 56 percent of bettors are behind the Clippers.

Mid-Major Money: Big profits from NCAAB small conferences

Team to watch: Yale Bulldogs (22-9 SU, 14-7-1 ATS)

Upcoming: vs. Harvard Saturday

First place in the Ivy League and an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament will be on the line when Yale plays Harvard (9-13 ATS) in a one-game tiebreaker at The Palestra in Philadelphia Saturday.

Justin Sears, a 6-foot-8 junior forward, is a big reason why Yale is in fine form and came within seconds of already clinching the league title (the Bulldogs lost at Dartmouth 59-58 on a buzzer-beater last weekend). Sears (14.4 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 2.5 bpg) was named Ivy League Player of the Week earlier this month thanks in part to a 28-point, 12-rebound performance against Princeton.

“You get your acceptance letter from Yale and one of the first things they tell you is, ‘We hate Harvard,’” Sears reflected. “Everyone gets into it. The number one most important thing at the end of the day is, ‘Did you beat Harvard?’”

The Bulldogs just beat Harvard 62-52 last Friday despite being 10-point road underdogs.

Team to beware: VCU Rams (22-9 SU, 11-19 ATS)

Upcoming: vs. Fordham/George Mason Thursday (A-10 Tournament)

A poorly-timed, late-season slump caused VCU to plunge from first place in the Atlantic 10 to fifth—and out of the double-byes that went to the conference’s Top 4 teams.

The Rams, who have lost three of their last four (0-4 ATS) and five of their last nine (2-7 ATS), can chalk up their recent struggles to complete failure in close games. Four of their last five setbacks have come by five points or fewer and two required overtime. By contrast, VCU’s four most recent wins have come by an average of 12.5 points.

Shaka Smart’s team simply has not been the same since Briante Weber suffered a torn ACL in a loss to Richmond on Jan. 31. Weber (8.1 ppg) was a senior leader and the instigator of VCU’s trademark “havoc” press defense. He averaged 3.9 steals per game.

The Rams are 11-19 ATS overall.

Total team: Charlotte 49ers (14-17 SU, 16-7 O/U)

Upcoming: vs. Middle Tennessee Wednesday (C-USA tournament)

Interim head coach Ryan Odom has been unable to get Charlotte going defensively since taking over for Alan Major (health issues) in early January. It’s not for lack of trying.

After using the same starting lineup for their first 14 games of the season, the 49ers have featured five different combinations in their last 15 outings. They have gone big, they have gone fast, and they have gone small (sitting center Mike Thorne and power forward Willie Clayton), but nothing has worked. UNCC has allowed at least 73 points in seven of its past eight contests and it has limited an opponent to fewer than 60 points only once in its last 15 games.

In games involving Charlotte this season, the Over is 16-7-1 (including 7-1 in its last eight and 12-2 in its last 14). The Over is 12-4 Middle Tennessee's last 16 overall and 4-1 in the team's last five. Since Feb. 19, the Blue Raiders have twice reached the 90-point mark (90 in a win over Marshall and 95 in a loss to UAB).
