Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- JB Holmes leads by 5 at Doral; he and Dustin Johnson both aced the 4th hole.

-- Kentucky jogged past Florida, finishes the regular season 31-0.

-- Randall Cobb (4 years, $40M) re-ups with Aaron Rodgers and Green Bay.

-- A diver did go in the water at Doral to get Rory McIlroy's 3-iron.

-- Yu Darvish has a sprained elbow, may need Tommy John surgery.

-- For some reason, Jim Harbaugh coached first base for the A's yesterday.

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a basketball Saturday........

13) Belmont 88, Murray State 87-- Probably the best basketball game we'll see all month; worst part of Championship Week is that Murray didn't lose a game between Thanksgiving weekend and yesterday but they're probably not going to the NCAA tournament. From everything you read, their schedule was too weak.

12) Just for the record, Belmont coach Rick Byrd is an amazing 22-3 in his last 25 conference tournament games and I don't care what league that happens in, that is still damn good. Belmont isn't real athletic, but they're smart and can shoot.

11) Dartmouth 59, Yale 58-- Yale hasn't been to the NCAAs since 1962; they had a 5-point lead with 0:24 left, a 58-57 lead with 0:02 left- if they won this game they were in, but now they play a play-in game with Harvard Saturday at the Palestra. That had to be a brutal busride from Hanover to New Haven late last night.

10) Furman 69, Chattanooga 67-- 10-seed upsets a 2-seed in Southern Conference.

9) Michigan State 74, Indiana 72-- Hoosiers had ball down 2 with 0:02 left, when a Spartan player fouled on purpose, thinking his team was up 3. They weren't, but Yogi Ferrell missed the second foul shot and Michigan State won anyway. You'd think the last thing a kid would forget is the score, but it happens.

8) Big South final this afternoon is Coastal Carolina-Winthrop, the 3-seed against the 5-seed, with winner reporting to Dayton for a play-in game on St Patrick's Day.

7) Louisville 59, Virginia 57-- Winning shot was hit by Mangok Mathiang, who in 14 minutes of play....took one shot. That one.

6) A North Carolina student manager drilled a half court shot on his third try (first two were close) to win $18,000 from State Farm on ESPN's Saturday morning show. We know that all student managers can shoot the ball (yes!!!) because of all the idle time they spend in gyms........shooting basketballs.

It was the third time in five weeks a kid made a halfcourt shot on ESPN.

5) LSU 81, Arkansas 78-- Winning shot came from Keith Hornsby, whose dad Bruce is a pretty famous singer-- young man shoots 39% behind the arc.

4) Vanderbilt 86, Ole Miss 77-- When you win eight of your last ten games, you can curse out one of your own players publicly and it goes away....quickly.

3) Temple 75, UConn 63-- Defending national champs are headed to the NIT unless they make an unlikely run thru AAC tournament-- they've done stuff like that before.

2) BYU 78, Santa Clara 76-- Last game of night was one of day's better ones. BYU was going to be off the bubble if they lost. Marty Haws made sure they did not lose.

1) Illinois State 65, Wichita State 62-- Bubble teams all over America are rooting for Northern Iowa against the Redbirds today; if Illinois State wins, one of those bubble slots goes "pop". Northern Iowa and Wichita are already in from the MVC.

National League East preview: Nationals' division to lose

The Nationals won the NL East by a whopping 17 games last season and are the favorites to win the division, NL pennant and the World Series in 2015. Covers Expert Steve Merril breaks down the National League East as we begin our preview of each division in the bigs.

Atlanta Braves (2014: 79-83, -1803 units, 63-86-13 O/U)

Division odds: 35/1
Season win total: 73.5

Why bet the Braves: Atlanta has one of the best closers in baseball in Craig Kimbrel. He blew just four saves all year long so if the Braves get a lead late, he should be able to hold it. They've got some nice pieces at the top of their rotation in Julio Teheran and Alex Wood, plus Nick Markakis is a solid addition to the lineup.

Why not bet the Braves: Shelby Miller is the team's number three pitcher and he's been hard to figure out after up and down years the last two seasons. Getting to Kimbrel could be an issue with the retooled bullpen featuring Jim Johnson, Shae Simmons and Jason Grilli. The offensive bench is extremely young and may not be able to get the job done at the plate.

Season win total pick: Over 73.5 wins

Miami Marlins (2014: 77-85, -2 units, 83-68-11 O/U)

Division odds: 5/1
Season win total: 81.5

Why bet the Marlins: Miami opened up the check book and acquired several new additions, along with giving slugger Giancarlo Stanton a huge contract. Mat Latos solidifies the top of the rotation to go along with Jose Fernandez when he is ready to return. Mike Morse, Dee Gordon and Martin Prado provide depth to a lineup that needed some additions.

Why not bet the Marlins: Latos only made 16 starts last year due to injury. The back end of the rotation features Dan Haren who doesn't really want to be there and Tom Koehler. A thin bench won't provide much offensive help, plus Stanton needs a solid lineup around him to ensure he sees good pitches and isn't just walked all the time.

Season win total pick: Over 81.5 wins

New York Mets (2014: 79-83, +311 units, 72-72-18 O/U)

Division odds: 6/1
Season win total: 82

Why bet the Mets: Second best pitching rotation in the division with Matt Harvey, Zack Wheeler, Bartolo Colon, Jon Niese and Jacob DeGrom. David Wright should be able to bounce back after he struggled last season. Curtis Granderson will be happy with the fences moving closer and Michael Cuddyer is now in the lineup as well.

Why not bet the Mets: Who will be the closer for the team and who is going to provide middle relief? This bullpen has some live arms in Jenrry Mejia and Jeurys Familia, but they are young and inconsistent. Will Matt Harvey stay healthy all year and can DeGrom stave off the sophomore year jinx?

Season win total pick: Under 82 wins

Philadelphia Phillies (2014: 73-89, -462 units, 83-69-10 O/U)

Division odds: 100/1
Season win total: 68.5

Why bet the Phillies: Ryan Howard and Chase Utley still have talent and they are both too good to struggle again this season. Dom Brown and Grady Sizemore combine well with Ben Revere in the outfield. Cole Hamels and Cliff Lee are still solid veterans in the rotation. Jonathan Papelbon is a strong closer and the team has several live arms in middle relief.

Why not bet the Phillies: Who is behind Lee and Hamels in the starting rotation? Right now it looks like Jerome Williams, Chad Billingsley and Aaron Harang are fighting it out with David Buchanan and none of those options inspire confidence. Will Howard and Utley be able to make it through the entire season without injuries? This team might also start trading away veteran talent as the season progresses.

Season Win Total Pick: Over 68.5 wins

Washington Nationals (2014: 96-66, +1062 units, 77-72-13 O/U)

Division odds:1/4
Season win total: 93.5

Why bet the Nationals: This team has the best pitching rotation in baseball with Strasburg, Zimmermann, Gonzalez, Fister and Scherzer. Opponents will struggle to score against Washington all season long. The offensive lineup will benefit with a full season of Ryan Zimmerman. The bench is also talented and deep.

Why not bet the Nationals: The bullpen is weaker without Tyler Clippard. Matt Thornton and Craig Stammen will have to step up their game. Jayson Werth is already banged up and Zimmerman is injury prone. Can the team handle the expectations that come with being the preseason World Series favorites?

Season Win Total Pick: Under 93.5 wins

Been a rough year for Nebraska; they've lost last seven games, losing last two at home by 10-28 points. Huskers are 1-2 as home underdogs- their last win was Febrary 3 over Northwestern.

Cincinnati (-1) lost 63-50 at Memphis Jan 15, turning ball over 20 times (-9) in game they trailed by 8 at half; Bearcats won last four games overall allowing 51.8 ppg; they're 4-3 as home favorites- five of their seven wins at home were by 12+ points. Memphis lost two of last three games but won last three on road, including 54-53 win at UConn in last game- they are 2-3 as AAC underdogs. Three of last four Memphis games were won by either one point or in overtime.

SMU (+1) won 68-57 at Tulsa Feb 7, holding Hurricane to 28.3% from floor in what was Tulsa's first AAC loss. Mustangs had a five-game win streak snapped at UConn in last game last Sunday. SMU is 7-1 as a home favorite, with only non-cover a loss to Cincinnati. Tulsa won four of last five games, 16 of last 19; they're 3-1 as AAC dogs, but all three of their conference losses are by 9+ points. SMU is shooting 37.1% from arc, best mark in AAC.

Wisconsin lost three of last four games with Ohio State, losing by point at home to Buckeyes LY; Badgers won 12 of last 13 games, are 6-2 on Big 14 road, losing at Rutgers/Maryland. Wisconsin covered once in last five games; they're 4-4 as road favorites. Ohio State won its last three games after going 6-5 in its previous 11 games; Buckeyes won last seven at home after losing home opener to Iowa- they're 1-2 as Big 14 dog, but all three of those games were on road.

MVC tournament, St Louis
Illinois State has to bounce back after an emotional win over Wichita in semifinals; Redbirds won their last six games, last three by total of nine points. Northern Iowa won 18 of its last 19 games; losing only at Wichita last Saturday; Panthers beat State twice, 54-53 (even) in Normal Jan 25, then 83-64 (-7.5) at home Feb 11. Three Redbirds played 33+ minutes in semis; UNI had couple stress-free wins so far. Five of last six losses for Illinois State in this event were by 5 or less points or in OT.

CAA tournament, Baltimore
Hofstra advanced in last round against James Madison squad they lost to twice during season; now they face Wm&Mary team that beat them Jan 28 at home 100-79 (-4, shot 73% inside arc, led 42-15), then 80-78 (+4, shot 57% from arc; Hofstra was 13-31 on arc) at Hofstra Feb 22. Tribe is one of five original NCAA teams that has never been in NCAA tourney. Hofstra scored 73+ points in its last six games, but split last four- they haven't been past this round of CAA tourney since 2006.

NC-Wilmington beat Northeastern twice this season, 75-68 (+12) Jan 5 in Boston, then 66-61 (-1) at home Feb 14. Seahawks were helped in the second game by Northeastern going only 17-31 on foul line. UNCW took total of only 14 3-pointers in two games (5-14); they've won five of last seven games, had stress-free win over Charleston yesterday. Huskies had three starters play 34+ minutes Saturday in 67-64 win over Delaware, a game that Northeastern led by 4 at half.

Southern Conference, Asheville, NC
Wofford beat Western Carolina twice this season, by 19-20 points; they finished seven games ahead of them in standings, but unless they can beat Catamounts here, they'll be like Murray State, on outside looking in when Selection Sunday is here. Western won in OT yesterday; four starters got 37+ minutes, three got 42+. Wofford won six in row, 13 of last 14 games. Western lost finals of this tourney two of last three years, but Wofford won it three of last five years.

10-seed Furman pulled huge upset of Chattanooga yesterday, now faces Mercer squad that is just 4-3 in last seven games, with four of last five wins by six or less points. Mercer beat Furman twice this year, but by a total of nine points: 67-64 (-13) at home Jan 15, then 74-68 (-5.5) Feb 7 in Greenville. Paladins are playing for third day in row; they came into this event on a 1-8 skid. Furman is 12th-least experienced team in nation; too bad they can't shoot 3's (32.8%); Mercer doesn't defend arc well.

MAAC tournament, Albany
Top-seeded Iona beat host Siena by 3 yesterday, using thin bench total of only 23 minutes; all five starters played 31:00+- three of them played 36 or more. Magic C Nikola Vucevic, questionable Sunday

Vucevic is dealing with an ankle injury and did not play Friday. He is questionable to play Sunday against the Celtics.

Home teams, under own the court Saturday night

It was a good night to back home teams and the under in NBA action Saturday night.

Home teams went an impressive 6-2 against the spread last night, with both home faves and dogs going 3-1 ATS. Home teams are cashing at a rate of 48.5 percent this season.

Betting the under was also a good call with it also going 6-2. The under has been the better bet this season coming in 54.1 percent of the time.

Pacers under run hits seven

The Indiana Pacers have gone under the total in seven consecutive games after their 92-86 win over the New York Knicks Saturday night.

The under run is thanks to some shut down defense by the Pacers, who are allowing 87.8 points per game during the seven game stretch.

Bettors hoping the ride the under streak will have to wait until Tuesday, when Indiana host the Orlando Magic.

Grizzlies struggling to cash tickets

The Memphis Grizzlies fell 95-89 to the New Orleans Pelicans as 1.5-point dogs Saturday night. It was the sixth time in the last seven games the Grizzlies have failed to cover the spread.

It has been a rough stretch for Grizzlies backers as they are just 3-8 against the spread in their last 11 games.

Bettors hope the Grizzlies can back on track Monday when they visit the Chicago Bulls.
