Six-pack for Thursday

-- Ole Miss-Tennessee was great game Wednesday night; Rebels killed Tennessee on offensive boards, but lost by a hoop, their first loss this season. Ole Miss is good, though

-- Tense struggle in desert ended with Arizona State's OT win vs Arizona, a breakthrough win in Year 2 of Sendek era

-- Why do announcers say, "One thing Team X does not want to do is fall behind early." Well, no freakin' kidding....

-- Hannah Montana was in Albany Wednesday night, and it caused traffic disruption, it was so popular. Not that I'm out of the loop or anything, but I had never heard of her.

-- Michigan QB Ryan Mallett will transfer, since he doesn't fit in with spread offense of new coach Rich Rodriguez.

-- Why in God's name would Pete Carroll leave USC for the Falcons' job? Does he want to own a Home Depot, too?

Thursday's List of 13: Wrapping up the bowl games..........

Final impressions from the 32 bowl games.........

13) SEC went 7-2 in bowl games, providing evidence that the blows that don't break your back strengthen it.

12) If Michigan had played like that under Lloyd Carr in bowl games before this year, Carr might not be leaving coaching.

11) Purdue had more points than rushing yards, still won.

10) Oregon protected their backup QB by running ball for 353 yards; getting six points with Ducks almost seemed unfair.

9) Worst bowl performance: Tulsa 63, Bowling Green 7. Not even close; Falcons' only TD was on one of their 10 KRs. If you return ten kicks in one game, you better be playing in the Arena League, and even there, you might not do that.

8) Best bowl game that could have been played, but wasn't: Georgia-USC, two of the best three teams in country.

7) Texas Tech rallied from 21-7 halftime deficit to nip Virginia at the gun. Red Raiders have to be tough to prepare for; you better have a lot of DBs who are in very good shape.

6) Clemson-Auburn was hardest-hitting game I saw.

5) Air Force, Navy combined to score 68 points, but neither won their game (Utah 35, Navy 32; Cal 42, Navy 36).

4) Central Florida-Mississippi State was awful game to watch as was the Maryland-Oregon State contest.

3) Six bowl teams scored 30+ points and still lost their game.

2) Georgia (+5) had best turnover ratio in any bowl game.

1) If you had bet back in August that Kansas would win the Orange Bowl this year, you'd be driving an Escalade today.

Seattle at Green Bay
The Seahawks took full advantage of their home field on Saturday, overcoming a fourth quarter deficit to beat Washington (35-14) behind an enthusiastic Qwest Field crowd. Green Bay, meanwhile, was 7-1 at home, winning its last four by an average margin of 25 points per game. The Packers are the pick (-7 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has Green Bay favored by 12. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NBA Gameday
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday NBA Gameday

The Thursday night NBA schedule is a light one with only three games on tap as Detroit faces San Antonio, Memphis takes on Sacramento and Phoenix visits Utah.

Detroit at San Antonio

The Pistons are on a four-game road trip that began in Dallas on Wednesday night. Detroit’s matchup with the Spurs on Thursday night will be their third tough opponent in a row, as they faced Boston on Saturday. The Pistons had beaten the Celtics earlier in the season, but could not repeat the deed last weekend after falling 92-85 as a 2-point favorite. Strangely the Pistons lost that game despite holding the Celtics big three - Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen - all at bay. Glen Davis led the Celtics with 20 points, marking the first time this season that Garnett, Pierce or Allen did not lead Boston in points. The Pistons delivered their usual balanced offensive attack in the loss with Richard Hamilton scoring a team-high 18 points while handing out eight assists, and Chauncey Billups added 17 points and six assists. Rasheed Wallace poured in 16 points and Jason Maxiell also scored in double-figures with 13 points.

The Spurs are coming off a hard-fought 130-121 overtime loss to Golden State as a 1.5-point underdog on Monday night. The Spurs were done in by Stephen Jackson, who scored 12 points in overtime and had 29 on the night. Tim Duncan led San Antonio with 32 points and 13 rebounds, while Tony Parker chipped in with 31 points and eight assists. Manu Ginobili delivered 20 points off the bench and Michael Finley had 14 points.

This will be the first meeting of the season between Detroit and San Antonio. Last season the two powerhouses met up twice with San Antonio winning both games.

Memphis at Sacramento

The 10-24 Grizzlies are not surprisingly coming off a 117-101 loss to the Lakers as a 6.5-point underdog. Six different Grizzlies’ players scored in double-digits in the loss, with Mike Miller leading the team with 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Pau Gasol added 18 points and 12 rebounds, while leading scorer Rudy Gay was held to 15 points. Rookie Mike Conley Jr. continued to impress in his fourth straight start, scoring 11 points to go along with five rebounds and six assists.

The Kings upset Sacramento 104-100 as a 7-point favorite on Tuesday night. The Kings nearly squandered a 19-point lead in the victory after playing a dreadful fourth quarter that saw them get outscored 38-26 by the Magic. John Salmons led the Kings with 21 points in the win and Brad Miller poured in 20 points.

The Grizzlies and Kings clashed three times last season with Sacramento winning two of three. However, Memphis was 3-0 ATS in the three contests.

Phoenix at Utah

The Suns shone bright earlier this week, as they crushed Denver 137-115 as a 7.5-point favorite. The Suns were lethal from the three-point line in the win as they hit 20 three-pointers. Shawn Marion and Amare Stoudemire both posted double-doubles in the win, with Marion unleashing 27 points and 14 rebounds and Stoudemire delivering 20 points and 10 rebounds. Seldom-used Marcus Banks scored 23 points off the bench for Phoenix and Grant Hill netted 20 points in the blowout victory.

The Jazz may finally be breaking out of their slump after pounding Indiana 111-89 as a 7.5-point favorite on Tuesday night. Carlos Boozer scored 22 points despite seeing limited action in the second half. The Jazz took a big 28-point lead into halftime which allowed Jerry Sloan to give his starters some extra rest and use his bench. Matt Harpring took advantage of the extra playing time with 16 points and Kyle Korver had 12 points in the easy win.

The Suns and Jazz squared off earlier this season back in mid-December when Phoenix defeated Utah 103-98 as a 7.5-point favorite. Steve Nash led the Suns with 29 points and 11 assists in the win, while Boozer had 24 points and 13 rebounds for Utah.

Ice Picks: Thursday's best NHL wagers

New Jersey vs. Carolina (-102, 5)

If you think special teams win hockey bets, the Devils are your team right now. New Jersey has a power play goal in each of its last four games and hasn’t allowed a goal on the penalty kill over the same span.

That translates to a 20 percent power play and a 93 percent penalty kill over the Devils’ last five games while the Hurricanes have a 16.7 percent power play and a lowly 73.7 percent penalty killing unit during that time.

It helps having Patrik Elias back in the lineup, who has three power play goals on the season and four points in his last three games. Elias missed a pair of games before returning back to the lineup three games ago.

Pick: Devils

Buffalo vs. Ottawa (-200, 6)

The Sabres are in the midst of their worst slump since 2003 with a dreadful 0-4-3 record in their last seven games. Things don’t exactly look like they’re on their way up either with Buffalo dealing with a pile of banged up players and a tough stretch in the schedule.

Forwards Derek Roy, Maxim Afinogenov, Daniel Paille, Tim Connolly and Toni Lydman are either questionable for Thursday’s game or are banged up enough to have missed practice time lately. Teppo Numminen has also left the blue line thin since leaving the team with a heart condition in mid-December.

The Sabres lost a shootout heartbreaker to New Jersey Tuesday night and they’ll face them again on Saturday, which makes for a three-game stint that no Eastern Conference team would envy.

Ottawa has been giving opposing goalies nightmares lately with 28 goals in its last six games. Not surprisingly all six of those games played over the total, five of which were set at at least six goals.

The Sens are 3-1 against the Sabres this year.

Pick: Ottawa

Phoenix vs. Edmonton (-120, 5)

There is a lot of talk lately of how the Coyotes are one of the biggest surprises this season. Somebody forgot to tell them apparently though because they seem to be just heating up.

Phoenix enters Edmonton on a five-game winning streak, which will be the second game of a four-game West Coast road trip. They beat Calgary 3-1 Thursday night and head coach Wayne Gretzky said the win was in large part to goalie Ilya Bryzgalov.

Bryzgalov has played some mind-blowing goaltending this season and especially lately. He’s routinely faced with 30 or more shots a game, which makes it more impressive that the over/under is 17-19 in Yotes games this year.

The Phoenix power play is also the hottest in the league right now with seven goals in its last five games for a PP percentage of 29.2. But the best part about the Coyotes right now is their value. They’ve cashed in as underdogs of +140 or higher in five of their last 10 games.

Pick: Phoenix
