Six-pack for Wednesday

Some thoughts to consider with the New Year upon us.....

-- Why does a round pizza come in a square box?

-- How is it that we put men on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage?

-- Can a hearse carrying a corpse drive in the carpool lane?

-- How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered?

-- What disease did cured ham have?

-- If corn oil is made from corn, and vegetable oil is made from vegetables, what is baby oil made from?

Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

13) Temps were in low 60’s here in America’s second favorite city Tuesday; on January 8, what a bonanza that is (it was 56 and raining in San Diego Sunday)…….tempered by fact that there are still 72 days left in winter. We take what we can get.

12) Playing devil’s advocate here for a second, is there even a chance that this McNamee guy was so desperate to impress Roger Clemens as a trainer, that he injected him with steroids without Clemens knowing it? I watch too many movies…......

11) Hawai’i’s athletic director is getting blamed for letting June Jones get away to SMU, and thus might lose his $250K a year job. He is now getting re-examined for way he dumped hoop coach Riley Wallace last spring, after Wallace coached Hawai’i for 20 years.

10) Speaking of Jones, am I only person alarmed that SMU recruited 10 boosters to cough up $1M each to pay Jones’ salary ($2M a year for five years)?

In effect, Jones isn’t working for SMU now, he’s working for those 20 guys, so he better keep at least 11 of them happy.

9) Wagner hoop coach Mike Deane has a chair with a seat belt attached to it that he sits in during games, to protest the new decorum rules for coaches. The chair even goes on the road to most Seahawk games. He still managed to get a technical against Columbia.

8) USC hoop phenom OJ Mayo took 19 shots at Stanford Saturday, but had no assists. Draw your own conclusions.

7) Teams with surprisingly good RPI’s: St Mary’s 3-Dayton 7-Rhode Island 18-Drake 21.

6) This is what the print media has become on slow news days: Jessica Simpson’s picture was on front page of New York Times Tuesday with caption: "Giants’ Secret Weapon." Yikes.

5) Suns scored 46 points in first quarter vs. Denver Monday, then tacked on another 32 in second; it is amazing that some of the Suns don’t seem happy. What team would they rather be on? Being Steve Nash’s teammate makes every Phoenix regular a wealthier man, because their numbers are higher.

4) I’m surprised they don’t televise Winter League baseball; I’d watch it, pathetic as that might be.

3) Jason Kidd had his third straight double-double Tuesday; he is first guy since Grant Hill in April '97 to do that.

2) Since Rich Rodriguez quit West Virginia to be Michigan's football coach, his family in West Virginia has gotten threats of all kinds, including a death threat. Probably doesn't make him regret his decision any.

1) Redskins sure go through a lot of head coaches; always got sense Joe Gibbs was happier being around race cars, but that football was what made him famous. He can work with his sons in NASCAR. Whoever replaces him will be seventh head coach in last seventeen years for the Skins.

What bettors need to know: Seahawks at Packers
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seattle Seahawks at Green Bay Packers (-8, 41)
Saturday Jan. 12 4:30 p.m. ET

Lambeau weather report (updated daily):

Early-week reports call for 20-degree temperatures at game time with a 20 percent chance of snow flurries. The forecast had yet to account for any winds for Saturday’s game.

"There was always the belief that the weather you get, that we will get probably, can affect the passing game more than the running game," Seattle head coach Mike Holmgren told reporters. "Yeah, we understand all this passing business, but when it comes down to December and January, you've got to be able to bang it around a little bit.

"I understand that. And there is some truth to that."

Bring on Branch

Seattle wide receiver Deion Branch is expected to start Saturday after missing last week’s game with a calf injury. Branch also had problems with a mid-foot sprain earlier in the year and missed six regular season games.

If he does start Saturday, it will be just the third time all year that he and D.J. Hackett are fit at the same time.

"To have all four (Branch, Burleson, Hackett and Engram) active at one time would be pretty special," Mike Holmgren told reporters. "When we put that out there, we have the ability to be pretty potent in the passing game. We haven't had that all season. I'm hoping."

Even still, Seattle’s wideouts put up some nice numbers. Bobby Engram caught 94 passes and Nate Burleson had nine receiving touchdowns, while D.J. Hackett and Branch combined for over 1,000 receiving yards and seven majors between them in limited action.

Life on the road

The Seahawks were 3-5 against the spread away from their storied home-field advantage at Qwest Field this season, though at least former Packer quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and ex-Green Bay coach Mike Holmgren know what they’re getting into at Lambeau Field.

Running for cover

If the weather becomes a factor on Saturday, both of these pass-happy teams may be forced to lean on the running game.

For Green Bay, that might be less of a concern than it would be for Seattle. Ryan Grant ran for 956 yards on 5.1 yards per carry in the regular season. He added eight touchdowns even though he didn’t begin carrying the rushing load until Week 7.

Holmgren was forced to abandon his running game near mid-season as Shaun Alexander struggled with injuries and ineffectiveness. Alexander missed three games and ended up with 716 yards on 3.5 yards a carry, while No. 2 back Maurice Morris gained 628 yards on 4.5 yards a carry.

Hasselbeck ready to go

Fred Smoot hit Hasselbeck hard enough to break the quarterback’s thigh pad last week, but that won’t keep Seattle’s signal caller out against the Packers. Hasselbeck will take treatment for a bruised thigh this week and shouldn’t miss any significant practice time.

He has already had problems with a strained oblique and quadriceps, bruised ribs, and a sore wrist this season.

Total toppers

The Green Bay Packers scored more than 27 points a game and played over the posted total in a dozen games during the regular season.

Seattle started the season by playing under in four of its first five games but has topped the total in four of its last six as the offense put more emphasis on the passing game.

For Saturday’s game (January 12)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reports: Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck says he'll play against Packers despite bruised thigh
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(01-08-08) KIRKLAND, Wash. - Mike Holmgren walked into the Seahawks' training room and saw Matt Hasselbeck. Barely.

The coach joked his quarterback was so obscured by treatment machines Monday, all he could manage was an arm wave and a shout of assurance that he was fine for Saturday's NFC divisional playoff game at Green Bay despite his latest ailment: a bruised thigh.

''I don't even like to go in the training room anymore,'' Holmgren said, smiling. ''He's in this thing that you would swear ... I didn't even know it was him. His arm came out and (he said), 'I'm going to be OK. Don't worry.'''

Hasselbeck's latest pain is in his right thigh, though it is not expected to keep him from practicing Tuesday. He took a hard hit from the helmet of Washington's Fred Smoot during an open-field tackle in the third quarter of Saturday's 35-14 win over the Redskins in the wild card game.

Hasselbeck said the hit was so sharp it broke his thigh pad. Third-string quarterback Charlie Frye gave Hasselbeck his on the sideline so Hasselbeck could go back out for the next series. He did, then shook off two interceptions to throw for the go-ahead score in the final quarter. Hasselbeck, who set team records for yards (3,966), completions (352) and attempts (562), finished 20-for-32 for 229 yards.

Seattle's most indispensable player has also had bruised ribs, a strained oblique muscle, a strained quadriceps, and a sore wrist.

And now the sore thigh.

''He actually broke my thigh pad. Some guys don't wear thigh pads. I'm glad we wear thigh pads,'' Hasselbeck said after the game. ''It hurt for a little while, but I'm fine.''

NHL Gameday

Wednesday NHL Gameday

Mats Sundin and his Toronto Maple Leafs head west to take on Ryan Getzlaf and the Anaheim Ducks on a light Wednesday around the league. Here's your NHL Gameday:

Colorado Avalanche at Washington Capitals, 7:00pm ET

The Avalanche are hanging around the Western Conference playoff picture despite the loss of forwards Joe Sakic and Ryan Smyth to long-term injuries. Sakic underwent hernia surgery and could be out for three months or more, while Smyth has a broken ankle and will be out two months. Paul Stastny is leading the Avs offense in their place.

Washington is still deep down the Eastern Conference standings, but they've made a bit of headway with a 5-2-3 record in their past 10 games. The Caps are coming off a 5-4 overtime win over Montreal on Saturday afternoon, with Alexander Ovechkin providing two markers in the contest. Ovechkin has picked up 32 goals in 42 games this season.

Dallas Stars at Chicago Blackhawks, 8:30pm ET

The Stars busted out of a four-game losing streak by getting past the Wild 3-1 on Monday night. That put Dallas at 24-16-4 on the season, and they're battling with the Sharks and Ducks for top spot in the Pacific Division. Forward Mike Ribeiro signed a big five-year, $25 million deal before the game, and then went out and collected two points.

The Blackhawks haven't had much fun in 2008, with a lengthy injury list helping to put a dent in their win total. Martin Havlat is back in action, but forwards Jonathan Toews (knee), Jason Williams (groin), and Ben Eager (concussion) are all sidelined. Chicago has sunk down to the bottom of the conference and division standings in recent weeks.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Anaheim Ducks, 10:00pm ET

The Maple Leafs started 2008 with a 4-3 win over the Lightning, but since then they've been dropped 6-2 by the Penguins and 3-2 by the Flyers. Starting goaltender Vesa Toskala has been out with a groin injury, but the team hopes that he can return to the lineup at some point this week. Toronto heads to the coast at just 2-6-2 in their past 10.

The Ducks, on the other hand, are 7-2-1 over their past 10 games, and they're 13-6-4 on their own ice. Anaheim has won three of their four games so far in January, most recently getting past the Predators 5-2 on Monday night. Travis Moen, Chris Kunitz, Chris Pronger, Corey Perry, and Ryan Getzlaf all picked up goals against the Predators.

Toronto vs. Anaheim (-190, 5.5)

The Anaheim Ducks are the hottest bet in the NHL right now and it's no big secret why. Veteran defenseman Scott Niedermayer has given the team a huge boost since returning 11 games ago after sitting out the start of the season while considering retirement.

Since Niedermayer returned, the Ducks have collected 16 of a possible 22 points. He has added a spark on the power play and has solidified a blueline corps that has allowed more than two goals only once since he laced them up again.

That means the hapless Leafs are in tough with a struggling offense that has been held to two or fewer goals in eight of its last 10 games. Toronto only won two games during those 10 contests and neither one came in regulation time.

Pick: Anaheim -190

Colorado vs. Washington (-130, 6)

Normally the Avs would be favored over the sub-.500 Caps, even on the road. But Wednesday night's matchup isn't a normal situation.

The Avs head into Washington without their top scorer, captain Joe Sakic (hernia), and third-leading scorer, Ryan Smyth (leg). To make matters worse, they face the Caps one night after facing the league’s best team, the Detroit Red Wings.

Colorado lost to Detroit 1-0 as +230 underdogs and the Avs now have five losses in their last six games. The lone win came two games ago, a 2-1 effort over the New York Islanders. Jose Theodore stopped 23 shots in that game and he may have stolen the No. 1 spot in nets from Peter Budaj after a 24-save performance Tuesday night.

Pick: Under six goals

Dallas vs. Chicago (+120, 5)

The Blackhawks are in what you'd call a bit of a slump. They've lost six straight games and have allowed 25 goals throughout that span.

Only Paris Hilton has seen more rubber than the Hawks lately, who have had trouble holding opponents to fewer than 30 shots. Last night, the Habs belted 38 shots at unfortunate netminder Patrick Lalime and four of the last seven squads have fired at least 32 shots on Chicago.

There aren't many teams the Stars would want to face right now. They have had a terrible time of putting pucks in the net, thanks to a feeble power play that hasn't scored in six games. Expect that to change tonight in a game with a total set too low.

Pick: Over five goals
