Six-pack for Monday

-- June Jones interviewed at SMU this weekend, amid the rumor he has already resigned as coach at Hawai'i.

-- Drexel lost a home game 67-63 Saturday; they were 15-31 from foul line, 2-11 from arc. World needs more shooters.

-- UNLV tried 37 3's at Colorado State Saturday, took only eight foul shots, an indication they couldn't get ball inside.

-- Florida International made 11-19 3's Saturday, only 8-19 from foul line. How does this happen?

-- Daniel Chopra won the first PGA Tour event of year, at Kapalua, on fourth playoff hole over Steve Stricker. It was warmer in Kapalua than here in Albany, by the way.

-- Chopra became just second PGA player in last five years to hole nine putts of 20+ feet in same tournament.

2007-2008 Bowl Analysis
Bowl game for January 7, ‘08
----------------------------------------------------------------------

#32-- BCS Championship Game, New Orleans, 1/7
Both LSU losses came in OT games, at Kentucky, vs Arkansas; Tigers have +18 turnover ratio, time to heal injured DT Dorsey, a great player who limped thru second half of season. DC Pellini is leaving to be coach at Nebraska but LSU players are used to the circus atmosphere after all the Miles-Michigan rumors this year. Bayou Bengals played six games decided by seven pts or less; they play in best league in country, are certainly more tested in big games than Ohio State, which played three MAC teams and Washington in four non-Big 11 games. LSU beat Va Tech 48-7.

Ohio State is 0-8 in bowl games against SEC teams, but Tressel beat Miles 33-7 three years ago in bowl games when Miles was at Oklahoma State. Unfortunately for Tressel, Miles has LSU's resources and talent for this game. Buckeyes lost 28-21 Nov 10 to Illinois, then slogged through 14-3 win over Michigan, with no takeaways in either game, although they did hold Michigan to 99 total yards. Ohio State is underdog for first time all season and they have motivation after being squashed 41-14 by Florida in this game last year. Make no mistake, there is big-time talent on both squads here, but LSU has more experienced QB, which offsets Tressel's track record in championship games.

Underdog won this game SU five of seven years; LSU plays to level of their opponent, going just 1-7-2 vs spread in last 10 tilts; huge question is health of Glenn Dorsey, who got hurt when he got chop-blocked in Auburn game- if he is back to 100%, that is huge for LSU defense. Tressel won four national titles in I-AA, another with Buckeyes, so going against him in these spots has been bad idea, but LSU plays in better league, has been tested a lot more than Buckeyes, plus this game is in Superdome, so it is going to be an LSU crowd. Slightest of leans to the Tigers.

MONDAY, JANUARY 7TH

BCS National Championship - New Orleans, LA
#1 Ohio State vs. #2 Louisiana State (FOX | 8 PM ET)

Last year, the extended time off (51 days) between games really cooled off the previously unbeaten Buckeyes, and insiders feel that same problem will recur against the SEC's best team. The Tigers have the most NFL talent on their roster and will be able to make good use of the break to heal their wounds, just like USC did in last year's Rose Bowl. That's bad news for the Buckeyes and could very well lead to another ugly title game.
Ohio State will be without backup CB Eugene Clifford, but starting CB Donald Washington has been cleared to play after it was previously reported that he would be suspended as well.
LSU head coach Les Miles is 13-0 SU & 11-1 ATS vs. non-conference opponents with Tigers.
Ohio State is 30-2 SU & 22-8 ATS in its last 32 games.
Ohio State is 6-2 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
Ohio State is 23-8 ATS in its last 31 games overall.
LSU is 8-2 SU & 7-3 ATS in its last 10 bowl games.
LSU is 8-2-1 ATS in its last 11 games on turf.
LSU is 2-7-1 ATS in its last 10 games overall.
Underdog is 6-3 SU in BCS title games, winning 4 of last 5.
The OVER is 7-1 in LSU's last 8 games overall.
The UNDER is 7-3 in Ohio State's last 10 non-conference games.

NCAAF Gameday Preview -- Monday, January 7
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BCS Championship Preview

The Ohio State Buckeyes were beaten badly in the BCS title game last season, so they'll be looking for a much better result when the play the LSU Tigers on Monday night.

The top-ranked Buckeyes will take on No. 2 LSU in this year's national championship contest, but if they win they'll have to do it as the underdog - LSU opened as a 6-point favorite in this contest, with that line hovering between 3 and 4 points at various sports books in the past week. The game's total, which opened at 50, is now at just 48 points.

Ohio State is coming off a 14-3 win over Michigan way back on November 17. That victory put their record at 11-1 on the season, and it put the team in position to move up the rankings as others stumbled. Chris Wells had both Ohio State touchdowns against Michigan, rushing for 222 yards and the two scores on 39 carries in the crucial contest.

Buckeyes quarterback Todd Boeckman went just 7-of-13 for 50 yards passing in the win, with no TDs and one interception. On the season Boeckman threw for 2,171 yards and 23 touchdowns and was picked off 12 times. Top targets Brian Robiskie and Brian Hartline were quiet against Michigan, but they combined for 15 TD catches this season.

The Ohio State defense held Michigan to just a first-quarter field goal in their regular-season finale, and Wolverines running back Mike Hart had only 44 yards rushing on 18 carries. Chad Henne was ineffective as well, going 11-of-34 for only 68 passing yards.

The Buckeyes will now be looking to do a similar job on Matt Flynn and his Tigers offense on Monday night. LSU's championship hopes looked dead after they lost 50-48 to Arkansas on November 23, but a 21-14 win over Tennessee in the Southeastern Conference championship on December 1 vaulted them into the national championship.

Erik Ainge threw two touchdown passes to stake Tennessee to a lead in that contest, but Jonathan Zenon returned an interception for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to give LSU the victory. Ryan Perrilloux, starting in place of an injured Flynn for the Tigers, went 20-of-30 for 243 yards passing on the day, with one touchdown and one interception. Jacob Hester rushed for 120 yards on 23 carries in the SEC championship.

Flynn (shoulder) is probable to play on Monday night, so he'll be looking to add to his season totals of 2,233 passing yards and 17 touchdowns (with 10 interceptions). Hester ran for 1,017 yards and 11 TDs this season, and Demetrius Byrd had seven TD grabs.

Here are the injury reports for both LSU and Ohio State for Monday's championship:

LSU Injuries
Charles Alexander DT Out For Season (knee)
Derrick Odom LB Out For Season (disciplinary)
Mark Snyder OT Out For Season (knee)
Will Arnold G Questionable For Bowl Game (illness)
Darry Beckwith LB Probable For Bowl Game (ankle)
Early Doucet WR Probable For Bowl Game (shoulder)
Matt Flynn QB Probable For Bowl Game (shoulder)
Trindon Holliday RB Probable For Bowl Game (ankle)
Ryan Perrilloux QB Probable For Bowl Game (finger)

Ohio State Injuries
Eugene Clifford CB Out For Season (disciplinary)
Curtis Terry LB Out For Season (ankle)
Robert Rose DL Doubtful For Bowl Game (leg)
Ross Homan LB Questionable For Bowl Game (toe)
Lawrence Wilson DE Questionable For Bowl Game (leg)
Donald Washington DB Probable For Bowl Game (disciplinary)

The Tigers haven't been kind to bettors this season - they haven't picked up an against-the-spread win since November 10 against Louisiana Tech, and they've only covered four times in total. In fact, three of those four covers came in the first three weeks of the season, so LSU is 1-7-2 ATS over their past 10 outings. OVER bettors have enjoyed the Tigers this year, though, as the Tigers are 9-4 on the OVER/UNDER in 13 contests.

Ohio State has been a better wager this year; they've covered in three of their past four games, and they went 7-4 ATS overall in games that had odds posted for them. The Buckeyes have also gone slightly to the OVER this season, posting a 6-5 totals record.

Kickoff for Monday night is set for 8:00pm ET on FOX, with the pregame show starting at 7:30pm ET.

Monday’s game (January 7)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reports: Two OSU cornerbacks suspended for title game
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(12-21-07) - COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Top-ranked Ohio State will be without two cornerbacks -- one a starter and the other a top reserve -- who have been suspended for the Allstate BCS Championship Game against LSU, according to media reports.

Donald Washington, a sophomore who has started every game this season for the Buckeyes (11-1, 7-4 ATS), and backup Eugene Clifford were suspended for violating team rules, WCMH-TV and The Columbus Dispatch reported Wednesday.

The Buckeyes are 4-point underdogs against the Tigers. The total is set at 49.

Athletic director Gene Smith declined Thursday to confirm the suspensions and said there was "work to be done" before he could confirm them.

Washington, in particular, played a key role in an Ohio State defense ranked among the best in the nation. He had 34 tackles, tied for seventh-best on the team with second-team All-American lineman Vernon Gholston, and also had two tackles for minus yardage, one sack, one interception and one fumble recovery.

Washington, 21, started at nickel back a year ago and moved into the starting spot at field corner this spring. In a 48-3 win over Kent State on Oct. 13, the Indianapolis native returned an interception 70 yards for a touchdown and recorded his first career sack.

With him out of the lineup, redshirt freshman Chimdi Chekwa will most likely move into the starting position.

Clifford was a prized recruit last spring after receiving all-state and several national honors during his days at Colerain High School.

He was listed as Malcolm Jenkins' backup at border corner on the Buckeyes' latest two-deep chart.

Clifford had played in four games, totaling eight tackles.

The Buckeyes' final workout before the holidays was on Wednesday. They will be off until returning on Dec. 26, then will practice for a week before flying to New Orleans on Jan. 2.

BCS Championship Game preview: Ohio State vs. LSU

Monday, January 7

BCS Championship Game
Teams: Ohio State Buckeyes vs. LSU Tigers
Date: Monday, Jan. 7, 8 p.m.
Location: Louisiana Superdome, New Orleans
Line: LSU -4, Total 48 ½ points

Got controversy?

The Bowl Championship Series does. After two years of relative peace, this year’s BCS title game might be the most controversial since the system was implemented in 1999.
Whether you agree with it or not, the Ohio State Buckeyes will face the Louisiana State Fighting Tigers on Jan. 7 at the Superdome in New Orleans.

Ohio State got in as the only one-loss conference champion among those schools that earned a BCS bowl berth. The Buckeyes went 11-1 this campaign, with their lone setback coming against Rose Bowl-bound Illinois.

LSU’s qualifications are a little more murky. The Tigers were selected over six other two-loss teams playing in BCS bowls. Its win over Tennessee in the SEC championship game was just enough to jump to No. 2 in the BCS ratings, ahead of West Virginia and Oklahoma.

That means the Purple and Gold are back in the title game for the first time since the 2003 season when they beat Oklahoma for the national championship. The Buckeyes make their third appearance in six years in the national final, though they’d like to forget their most recent visit.

Ohio State was thrashed by Florida in a 41-14 drubbing in which the Buckeyes were favored by seven points. OSU managed just 82 yards of total offense that night and an otherwise sensational season was smeared for Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith.

But that was then. The Buckeyes look like they could be a more complete unit this season, minus the Troy Smiths and Ted Ginns. Ohio State owns the best statistical defense in the nation, leading the way in total defense (227.6 yards against per game), scoring defense (10.7 points per game), passing defense (148.2 yards per game) and ranks third in rushing defense (79.4 yards per game).

Bronko Nagurski finalist James Laurinaitus anchors the unit with 103 tackles, five sacks and two interceptions. He is just a year removed from winning the award outright as the nation’s top defensive player and might well be the most recognizable name on the Buckeyes roster.

The offense doesn’t have anyone with quite the same star appeal. If there’s one player who comes close, it’s running back Chris Wells. Wells gave Ohio State’s rushing game a much needed boost this season when he ran for over 1,500 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Last season the Buckeyes lacked an explosive tailback like Wells that could knock a defense back and keep it on its toes. Wells has both the power and speed needed to give his team a true dual-threat offense. Ohio State was only 4.2 yards shy of averaging more than 200 yards both in passing and rushing per game.

Todd Boeckman took over as quarterback this season and didn’t look much like a first-year starter. He was a poised decision-maker in the pocket and managed over 2,000 yards with 23 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Now Boeckman faces his toughest test against an LSU defense that doesn’t sit far behind the Buckeyes in the stats department. The Tigers rank third in the nation in total defense and 20th in scoring defense with 19.6 points per game.

LSU’s defense also ranks fourth in the nation in turnovers gained and is fifth in interceptions with 21. It helps when you have the nation’s best defensive player, Glenn Dorsey, hurrying the quarterback every down. Dorsey edged out Laurinaitis for this year’s Bronko Nagurski award despite battling through a knee injury for much of the season.

On offense, LSU is hoping starting quarterback Matt Flynn will be healed in time for Jan. 7. Flynn suffered a shoulder injury against Arkansas that kept him out of the SEC championship game.

Flynn is a senior starting for the first time this season. He tossed for 2,233 yards, 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, but he can also scramble when he has to. Flynn has rushed for 204 yards and four touchdowns. That should concern an Ohio State squad that struggled against mobile quarterbacks like Illinois’ Juice Williams this year.

Flynn’s backup, sophomore Ryan Perrilloux, can also pick up yards on the ground and will pose the same kinds of threats if the No. 1 QB is unable to play. Perrilloux threw for 243 yards in the season-ending 21-14 win over Tennessee.

The Tigers have a pile of other weapons like 1000-yard running back Jacob Hester and shifty receiver Early Doucet. The 22-year-old Doucet is one of five LSU players with more than 200 yards receiving and three touchdowns this season.
LSU averaged 38.7 points and 448.2 yards per game this season, which ranks the team in the top 25 in the nation in both categories.

Those kinds of numbers helped the Tigers win football games but also attracted large pointspreads from Las Vegas oddsmakers. LSU covered only two spreads in its final 10 games.

Ohio State was more profitable with a 7-4 against-the-spread record this year. The last time the Buckeyes were underdogs in a national championship game was in the 2002 Fiesta Bowl when Miami was a 12-point favorite. The Buckeyes won that game 34-31 in double overtime.

LSU was a 6 ½-point underdog when it beat Oklahoma for the national title in 2003-04.

Previews and Picks

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Today’s best NHL bets
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota at Dallas (-140, 5)

Injuries have the Stars’ stock falling. They’ve dropped four straight heading into Monday’s game with Sergei Zubov, Jere Lehtinen, Jussi Jokinen and Philippe Boucher all hurting.

To make matters worse, captain Brenden Morrow and goaltender Marty Turco can’t shake out of terrible slumps.

Dallas, which had scored 20 goals over a four-game winning streak in late December, has just four goals during its recent slump.

Pick: Under

New York Islanders at Edmonton (-115, 5)

Sheldon Souray’s back in the lineup, but he’s far from 100 percent. He missed two months with a sprained shoulder and is just trying to play through the pain now that he’s back on the ice.

"I don't want to make it sound worse than it is, but it is something we'll have to monitor,” Souray told the Edmonton Sun before his Oilers topped the Rangers in a shootout. “We need to be a little cautious because it was starting to get to the point where I wasn't being very effective. We took a step back, got the treatment and I'm starting to feel a little better."

Souray picked up a power play assist in 29 minutes of ice time against the Rangers. Even though his shoulder injury will hamper him in the trenches in his own zone, he’s still a huge asset with the man advantage.

Pick: Oilers

Nashville at Anaheim (-171, 5)

When Scott Niedermeyer’s on his game, he’s one of the best offensive defensemen in the league. He’s going to need some time to get back to that elite level after sitting back to mull over retirement for the first few months of the season, but he’s already making a difference with the Ducks.

Niedermeyer has five points in just nine games, helping the Ducks to a 6-2-1 run following his return.

Pick: Anaheim

Denver Nuggets at Phoenix Suns (9 PM ET)

The Denver Nuggets enter this game looking for their fourth straight win, and Allen Iverson has been leading the way. Iverson is averaging 37 ppg during the streak, and now he faces the Phoenix Suns in which allowed 70 points to the veteran in two games last season. EDGE: NUGGETS
Amare Stoudemire has made big plays all season for Phoenix, averaging 22 points and 9 rebounds, but he has been even better over the Suns last five games, averaging 28 points and 12 rebounds. Problem is Stoudemire was shutdown in two meetings against Denver last year to only 25 points combined. EDGE: NUGGETS
Suns leader Steve Nash is on pace to lead the NBA in assists for the fourth straight season, as he's averaging a career-best 12 per game. Nash has averaged 18 points and 11 assists in 11 games against Denver since joining the Suns in 2004-05. EDGE: SUNS
The Suns are leading the league in points for the fourth straight season, averaging 109 ppg. The Nuggets are the fourth-highest scoring team in the league, averaging 107 ppg. EDGE: OVER
Nuggets are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 Monday games.
Suns are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 home games. (Bet Denver +7 at BetUS - the best line available at last check!)
The UNDER is 9-3 in Phoenix's last 12 games vs. the Western Conference.

San Antonio Spurs at Golden State Warriors (NBA | 10:30 PM ET)

The Southwest Division leading San Antonio Spurs finally have their top three players back on the court together, in Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, and Tim Duncan. “We’ve missed him (Ginobili) as he is our finisher, and it’s good to have him back,” said Duncan. That doesn't bode well for a Golden State Warriors team that has lost back-to-back games against other top Southwest Division teams. EDGE: SPURS
The Warriors back-to-back losses were against Dallas and New Orleans. Golden State hadn't dropped consecutive games since opening the season with a six-game losing streak. Warriors guard Baron Davis said, “We are not giving an effort on the defensive end.” Golden State is allowing 107 ppg overall on the season, and 108 over its last five. EDGE: SPURS
The Warriors won the first meeting this season against the Spurs 96-84 at home on Dec. 11. Golden State held Parker and Ginobili to 9-for-28 shooting, and the entire team to just 38 percent for the game. Spurs center Tim Duncan did not play, and is now questionable tonight with a swollen left knee. EDGE: WARRIORS
Spurs are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games overall.
Warriors are 9-2 in their last 11 games vs. Southwest Division.
The UNDER is 7-2 in San Antonio's last 9 games vs. Western Conference opponents.
The UNDER is 9-3 in San Antonio's last 12 games overall.
